Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I feel bad for all those blue collar production workers who will miss out on many months of gainful employment because the Snow White film did so poorly.
Ironic you mention this right after I read this article from The LA Times…

Hollywood really need Stitch, Jurassic World, Avatar, Wicked 2, etc to pull in massive numbers. After the disastrous 2023 box office, and possibly the worst timed strike ever, 2024 looked like it had turned things around… but it’s still struggling.

But many posters on here assured us there was nothing for these production-level folks to worry about.

No one said anything of the sort. What was said is that Hollywood uses many production crews around the world not just in and around Los Angeles because its cheaper, and in relation to Snow White they used UK production crews. And so local production crews in and around Los Angeles might be hurting but the hope is the newly increased California tax credit will entice studios to start shooting again in and around Los Angeles and the rest of California.

Another thing that popped up on my feed today that’s relevant to recent discussions here…

Maybe my remark about the secondary “DVD” market being dead was premature, $100 million from VOD is still a pretty solid second stream of revenue, probably not equivalent to the glory days secondary market but that’s a decent chunk of change.

When you add that to other post-theatrical sources it for sure makes up whatever was lost from the Video/DVD market.

This is why this idea that streaming/digital doesn't bring in money is always a ridiculous sentiment, if it wasn't studios wouldn't be doing it. People just moved their spending from physical sources to digital sources, equivalent money is spent in the end.

Replying to my own post because this has me wondering if Wicked VOD sales were helped by it being on a lessor used streaming service. Peacock only has about 35 million subscribers so most people that wanted to see it probably saw paying a one time VOD price as the best choice.

Found a chart…

VOD is a fraction of what DVD and Bluray used to bring in but streaming is raking in the money.

That is how they breakup the calendar year totals.

If you look at the summary page for the movie it has everything listed.
Makes for quite a disparity in annual rankings!

It shouldn’t end up in the top ten, but it’s currently number 2 for 2025, way down the list at 19 for 2024, but 6th worldwide for 2024. Odd system.

Also recall it went to VOD while the property was still hot and in theaters. I think that boosted VOD.

Its just how they do the default calculation, they use calendar year rather than release year. So since most of the money made for Mufasa was in 2025 they attribute that toward 2025 calendar year totals.

You can change the chart to show "in-year releases" rather than "calendar grosses", and that will show Mufasa is actually number 9 domestic for 2024 -

Cool. So what is it really considered within the industry?

I was a very early adopter of Schitt's Creek during its first season on the otherwise obscure Pop! cable channel, solely because it had the great Catherine O'Hara in it. I remember trying to tell friends and family to watch this crazy funny Canadian show with a name you couldn't really say out loud in polite company, and people had no idea what I was talking about.

But one viewing and they were hooked. Honestly, if it's got Catherine O'Hara in it, I watch it automatically and always enjoy it. And everyone else should do the same. It would cut out the year or two wait for it to start trending on Netflix.

I've been a fan of Ms. O'Hara for almost 50 years now. (In the 70's in Seattle, we used to get the original SCTV from Edmonton on the UHF dial out of Vancouver. I was an instant fan!). And I'm thrilled beyond belief to see her get a career boost at this later stage in life. God bless that woman, and God bless Canada for all their other hilarious comedians they've gifted the world (the entire Schitt's Creek cast, Martin Short, John Candy, Andrea Martin, etc.)! You folks up there can be really very funny! 🇨🇦🤣🇨🇦
If you ever go to Epcot there’s a show about Canada with her and eugune levy.

It would be really, really great if this killed the Bambi remake. I know it's rumored to be dead, but I need to see its heart to make sure.

I expect Tangled to rise again like a zombie once they evaluate and consider the vast, vast amount of stupid moves they put into Snow White that they could just not do for Tangled. Alternatively, the siren call of potential merchandise sales will revive it, if self introspection is too difficult.

But Bambi? I would guess that one is in the "recognizable name but not a powerhouse" category. It sells some stuff but not nearly as much and doesn't get used nearly as much as Snow White.

It's such a wonderful movie, though, and was clearly going down the exact same path of having people in charge with no clue what was happening in the original yet being certain they can "fix" it.

Absolutely no one will benefit from a Bambi remake, not even their wallets.

Snow White dropped below 1 million on Wednesday. Turns out she was dead on the floor before Steve even showed up...

I really thought this was going to make money. Like, I hoped it would bomb miserably, but audiences go see terrible looking crap all the time. I just hoped it would fail to break even and we wouldn't get a serious of stupid spin offs starring each dwarf.

I'm so glad this worked out for everyone who isn't one of the hacks/giant morons/narcissists working on this movie. I hope people got fired.

Karate kid legends looks great to me. When the commercial comes on I must watch the entire commercial, I never do that.
Yes, I know its just Karate kid in NY, but it still looks like its going to be a great movie.

Will I go to the theater to see it? Most likely not unless family wants to.

Like many, we have been trained to wait for it be on streaming.

The animals were the best cgi in SW. They make an argument FOR doing Bambi.

If the story is a good story, it will work, and Bambi will be more popular. Otherwise, it eventually becomes irrelevant.

The SW story had one main issue: why, in 2025, would we want to perpetuate the myth that whomever has the whitest skin is the most special?

This…. I thought of Bambi as I watched…,I loved Dopey’s arc… that supplied the single best moments in Snow White for me….however The Dwarves CGI were not great…. The animals were perhaps my favorite CGI in a live action I have seen… it blended well with the live action… but they still displayed more emotions that you can create with animation films
