Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Nostalgia Critic had a great video recently in response to Snow White about how Disney has an emotional storytelling problem. I think he's spot on with snow white and wizard of oz... and I get what he's saying about Where the wild things are though i think there are much better examples-



One thing that has irked me in recent years that is the same concept is music in most recent films is sorely lacking. Watching older films, the music and audio cues were part of the presentation. These days the music is disjointed and an afterthought that i find hurts scenes more often than helps.

American created media has too much of a monopoly on pop culture to be significantly impacted by consumer shifts in my opinion.

Access to the lucrative Chinese theater market however, is tightly controlled by China, and that is something to keep an eye on.

Agreed. And the Disney stuff that has flopped hard the past few years in the US also flopped badly overseas. Similarly, the few big hits Disney (well, only Marvel really) had the past few years were also big hits overseas.

When it comes to "Disney" entertainment, audiences aren't much different whether they're in Memphis, Mexico City or Munich.

I do agree that’s largely true. We have no other great source of English language media outside of Hollywood. So much media is made in Canada/UK, but Hollywood pulls most of those strings outside of the rare CBC or BBC esque hit. Even still those really hit once they find their way on Netflix years later. Think Suits or Schitts Creek.

I was a very early adopter of Schitt's Creek during its first season on the otherwise obscure Pop! cable channel, solely because it had the great Catherine O'Hara in it. I remember trying to tell friends and family to watch this crazy funny Canadian show with a name you couldn't really say out loud in polite company, and people had no idea what I was talking about.

But one viewing and they were hooked. Honestly, if it's got Catherine O'Hara in it, I watch it automatically and always enjoy it. And everyone else should do the same. It would cut out the year or two wait for it to start trending on Netflix.

I've been a fan of Ms. O'Hara for almost 50 years now. (In the 70's in Seattle, we used to get the original SCTV from Edmonton on the UHF dial out of Vancouver. I was an instant fan!). And I'm thrilled beyond belief to see her get a career boost at this later stage in life. God bless that woman, and God bless Canada for all their other hilarious comedians they've gifted the world (the entire Schitt's Creek cast, Martin Short, John Candy, Andrea Martin, etc.)! You folks up there can be really very funny!

Hmm… I don’t remember if I ever saw the animated version, possibly bits and pieces. But it seems to be more popular than I would have expected. That leads me to believe it would have some pull. But it might be a good idea to see how the ones already in production do first, and then slow the pace like they have done with Star Wars and Marvel.

While there are certainly a number of people who have an issue with the live action remakes, I seriously doubt there are enough of them to cause this kind of issue at the box office. Snow White is an anomaly for several reasons. They have to know that. It being a live action remake was way down on the list.

OK, someone explain to me why box office Mojo shows Mufasa’s worldwide total haul to date as being in 2024, but shows domestic total in 2024 as only what it made in 2024, and then shows it again in 2025 with only what it made in 2025?

They really should pull it now that it’s on Disney+, and also it could hit 255 million domestic this weekend. Didn’t see that coming.

It will be interesting to see if/how quickly they put it back into production if Stitch makes a couple hundred million in profit.

Tangled is one of the better Princess movies in my opinion, I’m not a fan of the remakes in general but this one has potential.

I think the rule of thumb may be: don’t make it weird!

I always say of song remakes: if you can’t do a better job than the first, or at least put a different spin on it, why bother?

Same goes for movies.

If a live version is going to heavily rely on CGI, then it has to be at a certain level. I think the Snow White animals and stitch look really good. The dwarfs, not so much. For some reason the mega sized versions of Ursula and Ant-man, not so much.

We've been assured repeatedly that no one at Disney expected Snow White to do well since obviously no one likes that character and they were just greenlighting everything in a frenzy. So it shouldn't affect any of their plans, they knew it would happen.

Surely Disney doesn't see any connection between this popular character and that chick from the outdated movie, right?

I feel bad for all those blue collar production workers who will miss out on many months of gainful employment because the Snow White film did so poorly.
