Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

So…do you think they should keep the age gap the same in a remake?
As I said I have no issue with it, it’s essentially a high school senior dating a high school freshman, likely happening countless times all over the world, in 2025, as we speak about it.

I wouldn’t be thrilled if it was my daughter but it’s pretty common even by today’s standards.

The 14 is the weird part, really. The age of consent was pretty firmly 16 in the Western world when this movie came out.

For the era that it's fantasizing upon, though? That's right within the norms.

Agree, it’s Snow White’s age that is the problem, particularly when moving over to live action.

She needs to be a bit more independent. Not for some token modern day reasoning, but so she literally doesn’t feel like a child.

Even Ariel feels a little young-ish. Though hers is the story of teenage defiance. But Eric still comes off at least as a peer. None of the other princesses (with romantic leanings) present themselves as too child like otherwise. A few immature, but more as a sheltered character trait.

There’s a bit more debate that he’s 19-21. I think 18 is putting the genie back in the bottle. Because, yes, 19+ is becoming illegal.

Snow has just gone through puberty, which is somewhat the conceit of the story. You could worry and say she’s even 12 or 13 with that information. She has no real discernible independence.

The Prince is presented as emancipated and older. 18 is generous as other sources place him 19-21.
Just out of curiosity, what in the actual film shows him presented as emancipated?

Maybe independent would be a technically better term. Snow gets chased away, he’s wandering freely. Though it’s been a hot minute since I’ve watched the film.

The same as what? Their ages are never mentioned in the original.

Where have they been confirmed? If it's just supplement material made by people years after the movie was released then it doesn't count.
Use your Google fingers.

18 is already illegal.

I don't need to. I watched the film and her age is never mentioned, nor was it ever mentioned by anyone who worked on the film.

Her supposedly being 14 was a myth perpetuated online to tear down the character even further. There are so many pop culture articles out there claiming she's 14 without any evidence or credible sources.

Fourteen seems about right. Much older and the princes can start to look more like frogs 🤣

The 14 and 18 ages come from Disney themselves via the art of Disney books, I agree with you though that unless you went out of your way to Google it you’d never know their supposed ages, I always thought mid to late teens and 18-20 based on looks, had I not Googled it I’d continue to think there’s a 3-4 year age gap, nothing nefarious in that.

Unfortunately by many modern standards it is considered nefarious at this point with that large of an age gap. So it does give the ick if you think about it for even half a second.

Given that he is a Prince from a neighboring kingdom alone on lands not of his own indicates he is at least of adult age in the eyes of his kingdom, ie emancipated. Not to mention that most kingdoms of the time wouldn't have allowed the heir to a thrown to be alone without at least one guard, so there is that too.

Then don’t ask the question.

The point was supposed to have been a softball question to @Vegas Disney Fan to establish that some things obviously should be updated when updating a film nearly a century old. This is routine in doing remakes. So why would you recreate a princess who is completely subservient to and at the whim of every man in the world - in 2025?

Exactly… I think some are missing the point…. It’s not about if it worked in the film back then…. It’s would it work for todays audience

In that case I hope some character explicitly mentions her age is 21 or older in the remake otherwise it's going to be extremely problematic. If they don't mention her age, people will just assume she's 14 like in the original.

Maybe the story will start on her 21st birthday.

There could always be references to things like school, peers, or many other things that would get the point across - for both characters.
