Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

There’s never been a good FF film, and the X series was pretty spotty (some great, much not). I agree there’s a lot of potential but shoe-horning into existing MCU comes with its own inherent problems and limitations.
Well it would require a real story and not focus so much on origins. Both FF first movies were origins, and none were really close to Comic history. The second FF movie from the first group with Silver Surfer was amazingly bad.

Disney and MCU will have to step up. Its one reason I would prefer them to focus on stories of conflict with Avengers and get the additional rub off of Avengers pull.

If the term "woke" is the same as "ultra-liberal", then what year do you think it is that the women's rights concepts of Barbie Land aren't found in our current day Real World??? Do you think it is still 1974? Because, I hate to break it to you, women have gained their rightful place in leadership and any career path they choose decades ago.

It's not 1974, Maude went off the air almost 50 years ago, and having a woman be a Supreme Court justice or an airline pilot or a doctor or a construction worker or a Senator is not radical, ultra-liberal thinking. It's how the world has been for the past three or four decades.

Tell me what was "woke" about the movie Barbie in the year 2023? I'll wait...
so feminist not woke, but an innocent gay crush is….so you just don’t want to see yourself on screen as you claim to be gay

He's been around Disney working on various scripts in one form or another, including the Swiss Family Robinson D+ show (which who knows where that is in development these days) so they may tap him if they already haven't.
Moore is the best character developer in a sci-fi/fantasy IP there has ever been

Brannon Braga and Jeri Taylor is on the shortie list as well…

Since our darling beloved Mother will freak out and start her little delete a thon and banning festival again, I will not post what I was about to post to prove how wrong you are. But I will say that all you have to do to get the answer is to google the words Barbie and woke together, and pages and pages will come up for your reading enjoyment.

So let’s take stock:

NOT WOKE: character stares directly at camera and explains America is a crushingly oppressive patriarchy
WOKE: tertiary same-sex characters kiss in background; woman can fly spaceship; mermaid is African American

See, folks? Totally logical and not arbitrary at all.

It’s only woke if it fails at the box office.

As soon as a “woke” film does well, the goalposts shift.

You get no argument from me on that.

He is however a popular mouth piece for the ideologues who chant the “go woke go broke” mantra.

So as I said it’s clearly hit a nerve.
The commentators and outlets that are decrying Barbie as “woke” are exactly the same as those that have criticised Disney’s films for the same thing. It’s interesting—and telling—that some here who would typically accept and indeed parrot such assessments (of films they themselves have never seen, moreover) are now acting as if they make no sense in relation to Barbie. I’m not surprised, of course; it’s just further evidence of an already glaring double standard.

I think of it as a win-win. Everyone walks away feeling like they got a cultural “win”, except maybe those on the fringes.

I was let down notably by their last one, Death On The Nile. Even though it had French & Saunders in it, who can do no wrong in my eyes.

But as a huge fan of the Poirot TV series that played here on PBS in the 90's, that movie was a real let down. It was also notably trampy and trashy a few times for no good reason, which is something Agatha Christie never was in the past. So why try to start now?

If they're doing another one, I won't be rushing out to buy a ticket after being burned by Death On The Nile. I'll wait, and if it's getting raves I'll consider it. Otherwise... I'll probably just track it here as yet another money losing film for Disney in '23. :(
totally agree. this version was a letdown. i remember watching the late 70’s version with peter ustinov when i was a kid. that was a much better version. my wife is a big fan of the series & splurged on the blu ray set. i wasn’t a big follower of it, but the few episodes i did watch, it was pretty good. as far as the upcoming haunting in venice, i hope it’s an improvement over death on the nile.

Might want to ask that same question to some of your contemporaries such as Ben Shapiro. I won't link to his Youtube video here as I don't want to spread that kind of message, but you can find it yourself.

I mentioned Ben Shapiro here a week or so ago. I heard his anti-Barbie monologue on the radio and think he's totally wrong. He doesn't get it at all, way off base on that one.

I agree with Ben Shapiro about 80% of the time when it comes to policy issues, but on this social issue he is way off base. And he obviously doesn't have a very good sense of humor or good taste in movies.
