I let you know the day I pay attention to whoever the hell Luis Fernandez is?
Hold your breath.

Crossing $500 ensures $700?

Ok…let’s see it play
International continues to be strong, not to mention as I predicted this weekend even domestic didn’t actually flatline as you suggested.

Also it didn’t just cross $500M, it’s already almost half way to $600M.

"I'm not going to pay attention to these very real numbers because I don't like them."

Yes. Crossing 540 at this pace indicates it will come very close to 700. That's how box office projection/tracking works. They use historical data. Historical data of previous box office runs indicates it will leg out to these numbers.

As BrianLo says, 650 is basically guaranteed. 700 is possible and depends on a few factors. But it's in the projection because it's plausible, not because it's some hail mary number. Many analysts are putting these numbers out, not just Luis.

There’s no guarantee here…

I’m content to see where it ends up? Not a hard concept

The thing about cash grabs is that they only work if the audience is willing to go along with it. Apparently the masses really saw something in the 2019 movie. I was just reminding myself of its performance this morning, and it's incredible how well it did everywhere -- the US, Europe, Latin America... everywhere. Clearly it had that je ne sais quoi, regardless of what our individual feelings about it were.

The trendline was that these remakes did huge business then…and have lost alot of buzz since

The gross for Aladdin and the jungle book proved that…

But fatigue is real too. Marvel movies printed money…now not so much.

There are more factors at play these days.

Another film is in the works. lol. But reportedly NOT a sequel to Mufasa. Wonder what it'll be.

So…. Mufasa WAS a success. Even before the box office run finished.

A remake following story beats from Lion King 2 would make sense.

Mufasa introduced Kiara as well as an evil pride of lions who don’t have their story resolved. I could see them going the Romeo and Juliet storyline now 🤷🏻‍♂️

Not really

It’s just what Disney does now
If it can even carve out a little bit of profit in theaters and then do well on the Disney + service Disney will see that as a win…. Currently that is very possible… it would not have these great holds if word of mouth was not positive…. Disney seem to have turn the ship there…. You don’t hear any of the same negative buzz that was said throughout the 2019 remake theatrical run

The movie is fine, not great, not awful, its fine. My thinking about todays Disney, as long as its near break even, or break even, its fine. I rarely expect blockbusters from today's Disney.

I wonder if it becomes easier and cheaper to keep doing this, possible re use of some CGI?

Although the budgets keep going up so I guess the answer is no.
