Director Robert Zemeckis has made some genuine classics in his career so far, with the BACK TO THE FUTURE series, FOREST GUMP, and of course, WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? which was his first forte into blending live action with animation. Later he would take that genre into new realms with the motion capture animation he used in films like BEOWULF and THE POLAR EXPRESS. His first live-action feature, FLIGHT, is currently in theaters and the director has been making the media rounds, where he shared his thoughts on a re-release, as well as a sequel, to "ROGER RABBIT."
When asked if he would ever post-convert one of his films to 3D, Zemeckis said it would only be for one film. "The only one is' Roger Rabbit,' because you could really pull the animation out as a separate element. It would be very spectacular 3-D," Zemeckis said. "As far as converting, the 'Back to the Future" films... I don't see the point in that. But they did a test on 'Roger' back in 2006, somewhere around then, and it looks really great."

When asked about the progress on a sequel for WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? Zemeckis was optimistic and it seems the project is much further along than simply an idea in someone's head. "I'm happy with the script. It's very good. It's written by the original writers, and it's good. [But Disney] is still thinking about it. If I were to do the sequel, it would be done just like the first one. It would look the same way, but we would present it in 3-D in its release. I would do all of the animation hand-drawn; 2-D, but using 3-D tools. It wouldn't be like Pixar 3-D. It wouldn't look like that."
When asked if Zemeckis' sequel to the film would include the modern-day stable of animated characters, the director answered confidently that, "No, this would again be another period movie. That's all I can say!"

Lastly, when poised with the question of directing one of the new STAR WARS films, Zemeckis was equally assuring, saying, "Oh, I wouldn't even know what to do. I wouldn't know how to do "Star Wars."
Strangely, I have more faith in Zemeckis than he does in himself on that front. I think he'd do a pretty kick STAR WARS, but I'll be happy just to have a ROGER RABBIT sequel.
Zemeckis' FLIGHT is currently in theaters and WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? is set to debut on blu-ray sometime in 2013.

I would love to see Roger back on the big screen.
Re-release the original.....no real need for a sequel.

If Disney is serious about doing a sequel, do the sequel for the right reasons....not just for a money grab.
With Zemeckis interested and seemingly positive, this show promise. I like his approach to keep the animation traditional. One of the biggest fears is seeing the Roger franchise *modernized* with CGI styled animation. Based on the above article, it is nice to see this is not being considered (only a overlay to the traditional to create the post-3D effects.)

Who knows...after the oversaturation of CGI animation taking over Traditional/Hand Drawn, perhaps a Roger sequel is what we need to bring Trad back to the drawing board again. The original film did so.....perhaps a sequel could do this in todays world now?

If THAT were to happen....then it would more the justify making a sequel.

Roger rules. I really miss that characters presence in the Parks.
Hollywood Studios needs its mascot back!

I'm trying to remember where I saw it... and maybe it was just a rumor... but I could've sworn I saw somewhere that it had a theatrical re-release in the works. It was probably just a rumor post but I'd be there if they did it!

I've said here before that Roger is just too good a character to languish the way he's done. I'd love to see him in a sequel - but I hope it's an improvement on the original film, which is a flawed gem in my view - very uneven in its humor. Also, while Donald Duck was put to good use in it, Mickey was not; no way he'd participate in a dirty trick like the one Bugs Bunny pulled on Eddie Valiant. That's NOT the Mickey Mouse I know and love.

That would be wonderful to see happen.
It seems a no-brainer considering how it has suddenly become 'cool' again to re-release films theatrically ( even if just for a couple of weeks). Seeing 'Roger' back on the big screen would be awesome. Even better if one could experince the Toon world in a properly converted 3-D version. I really enjoyed what Disney did for the 3-D re-release of The Lion King.

Agree...which is why Bugs was chosen for the prank and Mick was just a innocent onlooker. ;)
Yeah, the Touchstone division certainly suited the Roger release ( content wise )...and that is part of the appeal. It stretched the cord a bit in the mind of the public in regards to what is considered a 'Disney film'..aka sweet innocent family entertainment. One looks at Jessica Rabbit and the Weasels...and ...well....( blushes )....there goes that description out the window! :D

I think a theatrical rerelease of Roger Rabbit would be brilliant! It was just a few years ago that I showed that movie to my teen sons. They both totally loved it, all aspects. The rich characters, the story, the application of the animation with the live-action. They loved it. They both still do RR impersonations from time to time. It's cool. There's a whole other generation that can be tapped here. Bring on the rerelease and the sequel! It's a great time! With the success of other adult-targeted animation (that I mostly despise for the tastelessness) I think it's a great time to do this.

Mmmmmaybe...as I remember it, when Mickey and Bugs and Valiant were all falling, Valiant asked Mickey if he had a parachute, and Mickey said, "Bugs does!" So he was kind of an accessory to the crime, er, gag. He did express sympathy for Valiant's plight, but to me, that wasn't enough. It should have been Mickey to the rescue IMO.

Just a heads up for Roger fans :
Disney is finally selling Roger and Jessica themed t-shirts again at Downtown Disney!

Just returned from a short visit last week, and spotted a NICE assortment at World of Disney.

Several designs, each one a winner....and i am usually very picky when it comes to recent t-shirt styles.
I was really surprised and of course thrilled to see Roger*s presence back in some form.

Here is a short list of what i saw:

Light grey tee with retro Roger Rabbit movie logo, with Roger and Benny below. Covers full front of shirt. Nice!

Darker grey, two sided shirt *Roger*s Piano Bar* -has Roger and Jessica in a club scene with piano on back, front has small Piano Bar logo on the upper right corner of chest.

Maroon tee with large Jessica in retro flight gear on front, related to old war aircraft insignia. Sorry, forget what the text on the shirt said! Maybe flight school ?

All were priced $25+....which seems to be the standard price now for most WDW tees. I remember not that long ago they were $16 a pop...but i guess Roger and Jessica are worth the extra $$$$.

Hope this helps some Roger fans score a shirt !

I grabbed the piano bar shirt back in December. Was an extremely hard choice haha. But any new news about the Roger Rabbit bluray release?
