Dining Solo

Getting ready to book my birthday trip (i'll be turning 52), and it will be the first time I've gone to the World by myself. I'll be taking advantage of the free dining, and was just wondering what table service restaurants you all recommend for solo dining. I've picked out the Sci-Fi in DHS, and maybe the Plaza @ MK. I don't know if I'd really feel comfortable doing character dining by myself, or at some of the other more "upscale" places like Le Cellier or Coral Reef.

Let me know what you think.

Absolutely go for Le Cellier! But bring some reading material for between courses wherever you go. I've found the timings are geared to people talking while they're eating, thus prolonging the meal. I've eaten solo at Rose & Crown and had some of the friendliest service ever from an attractive young British girl... [maybe you'll get a handsome young man :D] But anywhere you choose to eat, it'll be great.

Character meals can be fun as well. Take a camera and ask the character handler or a server to take pics. The characters usually enjoy having an adult to have fun with.

I did the free dining solo three Septembers ago. Monty hit it on the head, I found myself doing alot of just sitting there and waiting. The servers seem to be on a schedule that is geared to more than one person dining at a table except for the buffetts. This year I am doing another solo trip and will do all the buffets and all u can eats.

Character dining solo is a blast!! The Character Attendants will snap lots of photos for you!

My favorite solo dining: (I've been solo 5x now)

Le Cellier
Akershus (sp?) princess breakfast
Lunch w/an Imagineer @ Hollywood Brown Derby (granted you're with other guests so it's not TECHNICALLY solo)
Coral Reef
California Grill
Beaches & Cream (dining @ the counter)
ESPN Club (dining @ the bar)

I've done solo trips to WDW and DLR and had no issues dining by myself. The servers, usually, are friendly and attentive. (Without being overly so.) One exception was a server, I think his name was Jafar, at Jiko who seemed to forget I was even there, but that is generally not the rule.

I have gotten stellar service at Citricos and Raglan Road. I am looking forward to trying some new places this coming trip. Possibly Narcoosee's and California Grill. :slurp:

I happen to like Brown Derby solo even without the Imagineer lunch. They have some small tables that seem to go underused. Very often I can just walk in without a reservation. They also have a very friendly wait staff.

About the only places I feel a bit odd eating alone are at the "family style" places. Ohana', Liberty Tree, Garden Grill, etc. Somthing about sitting alone with a pile of family style food to serve myself with just seems strange. I will say though that the Garden Grill does bring smaller portions if you are solo. I also had Chip come over and visit me every few minutes, that sort of threw me for a loop. :)

My wife had a work convention at EPCOT, so we planned a small vacation out of it.

When she was in meetings, I basically ate around the countries in EPCOT. I've done eaten solo many times at Tangierine Cafe. I ususally don't do a sit down restaturant if solo...I'll grab counter service and take it somewhere...like the little tables in the France pavilion even though I'm eating Morocco.

OK - you've all convinced me! I've decided to go for it and make ADR's for whereever I want, and not to worry about being alone. Besides, it is my birthday trip, and what's the use of gong to WDW for your birthday if you don't have at least one meal with the Mouse??!!?? So Chef Mickey's will be a definite (staying @ WL anywy, so that's just a short boat ride), and I've always wanted to try Le Cellier, and you're right about the service @ the Rose & Crown - the little girl who waited on us was one of the nicest CM's we met on our trips.

If I were going by myself, I would probably choose the following restaurants (w/o characters):

Tony's Town Square
Cape May Cafe'
Tusker House
Ohana's :slurp:
Yachtsman Steakhouse
Le Cellier

Never gone solo yet, but was supposed to last year so I had some places in mind to eat while by myself.

Kona Cafe (Poly) would be a great place to have a nice breakfast in the morning. (my favorite!!!)

I've also thought about Le'Cellier, Beaches & Cream, The Plaza at MK, and BoatWrights at Port Orleans Riverside. Anything you choose will be great...you're at WDW!!!! :D
