Dining Cost?

Does anyone know what the cost of the Disney Diney Plan is supposed to be? By my calculations, for 7 nights, the cost is $311 per person. Which comes to just under $45.00 per day. This seems a bit high for those who don't snack, daily eat appetizers & eat dessert.
Also, is it possible to get the DDP for less than the nights that you are staying on property. Day 1 & Day 7 are really travel days & we won't have time to sit & eat.

The dining plan only gives you meals for the amount of nights that you stay. So is you travel in on day 1 you would get meals for that day and all the other nights that you stay. So day 7 (which I assume would be your last day) you would not get any meals for that day. The nice part of the DDP is that you can split them up and have 3 table services in one day if you choose.

It is worth it in the long run. You do not have to worry about the extra money while you are there, and you ctually know how much your trip will cost. Where as, if you just pay out of pocket, you may spend more than you would with the DDP.

I suggest it!!

Cost went up this year to $37.99 (adult) and $10.99 (children 3-9)

There are many threads on this topic, but in short you should look at what you plan on eating and the menu prices and see if it works for your family. We love it and it allows us to go to eat at places we could never afford before.

O Yeah! Welcome to the boards!

I'm not sure how you came up with $311 per person when the dining plan is $37.99 per night/per adult and you will be staying 6 nights which is $227. You must buy the dining plan for the full number of nights of your stay.

Don't snack -- do you stop and have a drink in the park, that is considered a snack too.

I find that when I go to WDW, I like having appetizers and dessert at dinner because it is something I don't do at home and this way I get to try new things.

Depending on your flights, on the way in you'd probably use the sit down meal for dinner and on the way out the CS for breakfast. At least that is what we did. Or if you're arriving too late on the way in, then plan to go to a restaurant to requires 2 table service credits, the Yachtsman steak house is wonderful.

If you don't think you would have time to use all your sit-down credits because of flight times, use 2 of them at one clip and eat somewhere like Cinderella's Royal Table or Norcossee's at GF. Waste not!

for My family's next wdw vacation I broke it down like this

a family of 4 ,2 adults and 2 children 1 9 years old other 14 years old
for 7 nights /8 days at the pop century (just used this as a base idea)

pop century with the park hopper and water n more
1937 (not including rental car tax or flight)

same with the dining plan only
2822 (not including tax , rental car flight) 855 dollars added

same with premium package ( wich is 3 full meals daily plus all the extras)
5,524 (not including tax , rental, flight) 3,687 dollars added

I was orig gonna just add the dining plan butI like the premium a bit more u get breakfast lunch and dinner. at any of the 100 locations and what would cost u double dinners for the dining plan dont cost u anything extra for the premium. I had it figured with planning thru the menus we can spend anywhere from 2000 to 2700 for food. so basicaly u have 1000 or 1500 more to account for and thats where the tours and the water sports and golf come in at.

last time we went to disney world we went out of pocket for our meals and it just wasnt worth it. cause u always sit there and say "well id rather buy this than pay 75 dollars for that steak dinner for myself" and u go and eat a bowl of soup instead or something this way u can make as big of a pig out of yourself u want without worrying about out of pocket expenses.

just my buck two eighties worth

This is how I responded in another thread like this: (Keep in mind if you're not looking to save every penny, go with the Dining Plan. I always am when my parents aren't taking me, so I go a differen't route...)

I agree with the above-mentioned advice - we ALWAYS eat at table service restaurants, and the Dining Plan is still not worth it for us. Basically it's $40 with tax.

Now, if you look at it the way they want you to, you come out ahead. You get an appetizer, a main course, a drink, and dessert, as well as a counter service meal AND a snack, all for $40.

But if you look at it a different way:

If my family went out to eat, we rarely do appetizers or dessert. Not because they're too expensive, but because there's so much food, we end up hardly being able to eat our dinner. And if we do get an appetizer, we get ONE to split between the five of us. Same goes for dessert.

So, for ex., we're at Prime Time 50's. We get one appetizer for all of us. And my parents each have a beer (Dad, probably two :animwink: )

If we will eat at a counter service later in the day, at, say $7.00 per person (7x5=$35), each had a snack ($3.00 per person - 5x3=$15), and at PT50's, which, if you add it up for our fam:

$5 per beer (3 beers, not covered under dining)
$6 for app of O rings
$15 for each entree (4)
$5 for little sister kid's menu
$2.00 per soda, milk (3)
=$15 plus 6 plus 60 plus 5 plus 6= $92, plus tip and tax of 20%, not 18% = $120 about.

$120+ $35 + $15 = $170. Five people times $40 a day = $200. So we saved $30 by not doing the meal plan. AND the beer/wine wouldn't have been included, so we saved about $45 by not doing it.

I CAN see where people who love the appetizers and desserts would make out like a bandit...it's easy to say, "BUT for 45 bucks more per day, we could've had four more appetizers and five desserts..." And if you would've eaten it all, great. We would just waste a lot of food and money.

Think about it: If we went for 9 days, and saved $45 a day by NOT doing the meal plan, that's $405 you saved. Not too shabby. Just something to think about.

You're right, depending on travel times....you can potentially loose one or even two days of dining that you paid for. Consider dinner shows (Hoop de do Review) or other restaurants that count as two to get full use of your plan. Good luck. Also, as others have said the "snack" can be bottled water, latte, fruit or whatever, doesn't have to be junk food. Check the full list to make the most out of your plan

We came back from a 10-day trip at Disney about a month ago and had decided not to go with the dining plan either (and we were happy we didn't).

We eat breakfast in the room with food from the supermarket (fresh fruit, bran flakes or cheerios, lowfat milk, etc.). We like to start the day like that anyway and this way we make sure the kids get something decent in them before we hit the parks. My wife and I usually hold out until dinner, but the kids will usually snack on (supermarket) bananas, yogurt, and the like and occasionally an ice cream from the parks or some candy. At dinner we treat ourselves and pig out a bit. We like the buffets a lot and the kids finally get to eat some fries, ice cream covered in candy and things like that.

I like to take a beer, my wife a glass of wine (or two), and that stuff isn't covered in the plan. We never eat both table service and quick service in the same day (to us something like the Flame Tree Barbeque is our big meal for the day).

For our eating style we definately saved money by skipping the plan.

Not to be argumentative here, but it does really depend on how you eat, so while it may not work out for one group, if you look at my family's typical meals, the dining plan totally makes sense. :animwink: I'll break it down by individual, as that makes the math cleaner, for me. I'll also start with the 50's Prime Time Cafe (and the menu from www.allearsnet.com) as an example:

Adult
Beer Battered Onion Rings - 4.99
Old-Fashioned Pot Roast - 14.29
Coke - 2.00
Dad's Super Sundae (mmmm...) - 5.99
Tax and Tip (we'll go with 20%) - 5.45
Total - 32.72

Child
Chicken Noodle Soup - 1.99
Grilled Hot Dog - 4.99
Build Your Own Sundae - 2.99
Tax and Tip - 1.99
Total - 11.96

Throw in lunch at the ABC Commisary:

Adult
Cheeseburger w/ Fries - 6.29
Chocolate Mousse - 3.29
Coke - 2.09
Tax (I'll say 5%, no idea exactly what it is) - .58
Total - 12.25

Child
Chicken Nuggets - 3.99
Tax - .20
Total - 4.19

Snacks:

Adult
Waffle Cone - 3.79

Child
Ice Cream Bar - 2.39

Grand Totals
Adult - 48.76
Child - 18.54

For us, even at next year's price of 38.99/night for adult (and 10.99 for kids), we're saving about $10 per day, per adult and $8 per day, per child, and that's not even maxing out the menu with Shrimp Cocktail and Sirloin Steak. So, if you want to have a sit-down meal a day, and can (and want to) eat the food you get, this plan really works. That said, if we didn't do the plan, we'd probably eat more meals at the counter-service and actually be saving money, but if we can spend a little more and get a good value, it seems like the smart thing to do (again, for us). I would just go research it - know what the people in your party would eat and check out the menus on the web and do a little math to see what things would cost you otherwise. Personally, if you're going to be doing table-service meals more than just once or twice, and each person will eat their appetizer and dessert, I think that the plan is a no brainer...

I have a stupid dining plan question. If you have 2 adults at dinner together do you both get to chose an appetizer, entree, and dessert. Or is it one appetizer for the table? My other question is...is it possible to share a table service meal between two people or is that frowned upon? Thanks!

As far as I know (and we did this) my wife and I each had an appetizer, but only one dessert (because we were full and only asked for one)

I would think that sit down meal sharing would be frowned upon but I do not know if it is outlawed!

Each gets an appetizer, entree, desert and beverage. Once you're at a table, you can indicate that you (or one person) will be using a dining plan card and the other will be paying. So if the other person just has a drink or a drink and appetizer that should be OK. There is no "rule" that I know of that requires both people to order. With that said however, it may still be "frowned upon".

The only dining plan requirement is that all parties in a room must be on the same plan. But that is in regard to reservations, not application.

I just looked at the changes allears.net is speculating, JP, is this TRUE??!!!
I rarely post - but I can add something here.

On the official Disney World website, you can see a list of the restaurants on the plan for 2007. Click on the "Tickets & Reservations" button underneath the search bar at the top of the screen. Click "2007 Packages" on the left, then scroll down to the Magic Your Way Package plus Dining -> click the selected restaurants unlined part in the package section and you'll see a list of restaurants pop up in a new window. All of those Epcot eateries are not listed on Disney's list plus all the other changes allearsnet listed - I wish it was just speculation! :(
