Fallen Heroes - We'll Never Forget You..

Now that more and more evidence is coming out about the shuttle tragedy, people are asking the question - Did NASA know after liftoff of the shuttle that it was doomed on reentry?

I don't think they knew. News would have leaked out if they did and they would have done their dead-level best at getting them to the ISS or getting another shuttle up to get them down( I know a real longshot there).

No, I dont think they did - they studied the films after lift off and apparently didn't see anything wrong (until after the disaster when it was studied more closely).

I agree with Captian Hook, i don't believe that Nasa realized how serious the problem was.

I also disagree with the media on their witchhunt looking for an individual to blame.

Investigate the cause, learn from it, make improvements and never forget what happened.

I don't think NASA knew that it was a doomed re-entry. They evaluated all that they could. The only way they could have done more would have been to inspect or look for damage close up (and I mean a person looking, not a telescope or satilite) and that was not possible. And even if they could have done that they couldn't repair any damage that they found. I agree with celticdog: Investigate the cause, learn from it, make improvements and never forget what happened.

This question comes up whenever there's some sort of national tragedy: "Did someone know and not tell anyone?"

-Columbine: "Did the parents or the friends of the shooters know and not tell anyone?"
-9/11: "Did the government know this was going to happen?"
and now..
Columbia: "Did NASA know about the space craft trouble?"

Am I the only one noticing this trend?

Any time something big happens conspiracy theorists come out of the woodwork...and of course, the news picks right up on all of it in the search for big ratings. Instead of looking for someone to blame for something we can't go back and fix, let's learn from the experience to prevent it from happening again in the future.

Now NASA says that the launch foam/leftwing/heat resistant tile incident was probably not the cause...

No, NASA would not knowlingly let their astronauts be in any peril.

Although I don't think NASA knew, I think it's possible that an individual knew and hasn't come forward.

If someone realized they had made an error, and it was ENTIRELY their fault the shuttle crashed or was about to crash and no one could do anything about it and they were the only one that knew about it -- I doubt they would tell.

Would you???

I think it's likely a small group would withhold information if they faced severe consequences.

The older I get the more I discover the incredible magnitude and depth of human dishonesty, deceipt and general rottenness.

Likely, I don't know.

Possible -- very much.

Probable -- ??

From what I read in the newspapers over here, one of the original designers of the shuttle wrote to President Bush alerting him to the fact that there would be a disaster. This was due to the massive cuts in the space programme, outsourcing which was not overseen adequately by NASA and the shuttles themselves being in service long after they were originally designed for.
