DHS CARS LAND

I suppose back on topic.

I might be wrong I simply don't think Cars has the staying power to warrant it's own land. I think there's much more they can and should do. Maybe a Cars ride but investing in an entire land is meh...

The merchandise power of Star Wars is huge, no doubt, but the section on Cars in every toy store is also quite large. It would be unwise to dismiss Cars as having a significant marketable value.

True.

But neither Star Wars or Cars can compare to the merchandise sales and huge pop-culture impact of Avatar. Oh, wait...

Can someone please tell me which aisle the Avatar toys and books and clothing and bedroom sheet sets and school supplies are on?

I had to quickly scan the last week of posts over the past 10 minutes to find that out myself.

The conventional wisdom from more than one insider is that a direct clone of Cars Land for DHS is off the table, but there might be a D Ticket dark ride based on the Cars movie coming to DHS. But the full 12 acre Cars Land with three shops, three dining locations, two C Ticket rides, and one massive 6 acre Mega-E Ticket at the end of the street called Radiator Springs Racers? That's apparently not gonna happen.

Now the insiders are talking about a Star Wars land coming to DHS instead. Which could be a lot of fun.

Well, I don't mind saying that I'm extremely disappointed.
Although it's mitigated by the fact that I have a conference to go to in Burbank in Nov., so I'll probably see Carsland at DCA.

Interest seems to have dipped since the latest rumors are no clone of Cars Land or RSR replaced with maybe a C or D ticket dark ride for Cars instead along with gift shops and restaurants. Hope has shifted to Star Wars. My biggest fear is they do both but both half butted. A neutered Cars Land along with a Star Wars restaurant, expanded gift shop and maybe an expanded Jedi Academy show, but no real E tickets for either.

My fear exactly! We'll end up with the Cars version of "The Seas with Nemo & Friends" and a Space Cantina, and a mini coaster that goes thru door jambs (MI=hooray?), and that'll be it.

And I'll be grumping, "Well, at least we've been saved from the horror of having a cloned land from DCA."

Agreed. I'd rather have cloned attractions than lesser ones. And the reality is that cloned attractions are cheaper (since they've already been developed) and easier for the suits to fully fund because they have a proven track record (e.g. they know RSR is a proven hit, so they can justify the financial outlay).

Having a full blown Cars Land copied from DLR isn't my first choice of what to do with DHS, but it's not a bad option all things considered.

Mater DHS isn't half as bad as the people who think it's a great idea to turn SSE into the Death Star.

And yeah, SW should get a dark ride. Not only because it would be cool, but also DHS doesn't need another thrill ride.

The Star Wars franchise is perfect for a cutting edge and long dark ride. I think it should be as long as GMR with all the technology and intricacies of the best designed Disney rides. It would be absolutely phenomenal. Actually mixing live actors, like they do with GMR would work really well too... I'm sure there are just so many possibilities. I'm really excited to see their plans.

Agreed. When it comes to clones I hear a lot of people saying "I would prefer a great original attraction instead of a clone". The down side to this is there is no guarantee that the original attraction will be great or even good. Carsland is at least a known commodity.

That comment is absurd. Buy any sweet Song of the South merchandise lately? How about that new Haunted Mansion merch at Target? Even Harry Potter has very limited shelf space now that the films are done. Merchandise power has literally nothing to do with the success of a theme park land or attraction. I believe both Star Wars and Cars would make excellent subject matter, but not because they sell a lot of toys. It's a ridiculous reason to dismiss Avatar. Barbie dolls sell better than Twilight Zone DVDs, so should we replace Tower of Terror with Ken's Dream House?

Yeah, we should dismiss Avatar because it's a boring movie full of already-dated eye candy with no appealing characters and no cross-generational family appeal. :D

To be fair today is all about synergy and leveraging IP. It isn't by any means a bad thing but it is how the theme park market works right now. The same could be said back when Walt started but they seemed to be a little more free to have unique concepts. That isn't to say another lesser IP or a non IP based attraction can't be built (Mystic Manor was one) but I think both Disney and Uni see the huge potential in big draw IP. It is just more likely to see Star Wars or Cars from Disney because it has huge buzz potential with multiple proven positives.

Eye candy is the name of the game in theme park environment design. Tech is the name of the game in attractions. Cars has one. Potter has both. Avatar will have both.

To be clear, a well executed Star Wars land should also easily have both, as would a Carsland with something other than RSR as the feature.

...yet it was the strength of merch that lead to putting Cars into the Route 66 concept at DCA...
... yet virtually every modern attraction real estate set aside for a merchandise location at the exit...
... ... yet the success of breakouts like Harry Potter were fueled by merchandise sales...

Yes, it certainly sounds like these two concepts have nothing to do with each other
