So @21stamps back on topic, here is the tent I am going to buy next. I gave away our REI tent to a nephew and since I can't decide on a camper, we are going to need another tent. I have done research and this is the one for us. Scroll down the page and check out the video of how easy this thing is to set up and take down. It will be just right for us, though a little big and bulky, but that is OK, as it is not made for hiking and camping, but more car camping. Our car has a back seat that folds down, so even though it is long, we should be able to put it in the trunk and stick it through to the back seat. This might work for you if you have room to transport it to the campsite in your car.

Oh I like that!!! T sits in back but the other half folds down to give us more room.. I’d have to measure to see if it fit.

Thinking of cabins and SUVs.. I wanted to share these photos, the one time when I debated switching to SUV permanently ;)

These are from Carter Caves where I posted photos yesterday.

When we arrived it looked like this-

Later on we were looking at this-

I went to put wood in the fireplace below (cabin provided wood)..

No kindling!!!!!!!!!
Called the lodge- received a message that the entire park would be closed for the next two days.
I went to my car and the only thing I had was T’s art papers from school in a binder in the trunk. We agreed that we should use them to try to get the fire started.

This is the largest flame that we got. Lasted a whopping 1 minute max. :(

Turned the heat up and played games until bedtime.

The next day the roads were not drivable and as I said, all facilities were closed. We had planned on eating breakfast at the lodge. Instead, we ate left over pizza for breakfast.

The rest of the day we ate snacks, and more pizza. Ventured outside to play in the snow..

The next morning we were almost out of fruit, snacks, and beverages. Lodge was still not open, but I knew we had to go find food in town.

Main Roads were at least somewhat cleared now.. but we saw this before we even got out of the park..

I gripped the steering wheel so tightly while driving 30 minutes to civilization. And by civilization, I mean one restaurant and one gas station exists in this town.

Lessons learned that weekend- Always plan to be snowed in when taking a trip in the hills during the winter.
NEVER rent a cabin if it does not have a gas fireplace.
Only take an AWD vehicle on such a trip.

Wow! What an adventure.

It’s a little over a 4 hour drive from here. Luckily we arrived early in the morning and were able to do 3 cave tours and a little hiking the first day. By the time we did the last tour of the day the snow was coming down, and it was FREEZING. We were the only people on that tour.lol. I felt bad for the guide, tipped him well.. but was selfishly a little happy to have a personal guide thru the cave. (The first tour of the day was fairly crowded). He even had a snowball fight with T afterwards.

It was a bit of a misadventure.. but we still had a great time :) I had brought board games and cards... we played them for several hours over the next 2 days.

No photos added lately so I thought I would add some from yesterday. Since it has been so cold down here we knew there would be some interesting ice on the little waterfalls north of us so we took a ride to the NC mountains, namely to the little towns of Scaly Mountain and Highlands. Lots of ice.
Here is a little snow tubing area at Scaly Mountain. Figured it would be packed, but the holiday crowds are gone.

I don’t know why the first photo is so small and blurry., if I find the original I’ll edit and replace later.
