The wife of a friend of mine died in their contemporary resort room a few years back. I can say that he said the people at WDW were exceptionally accommodating and very helpful and dealing with arrangements to transport her and the family back home. WDW staff watched the kids while he went to the hospital and dealt with the situation.

There goes that myth that nobody dies at Disney

If he was pronounced dead at the hospital, as someone posted, then he did not 'die at Disney'.

Yes, I know others have been pronounced on property, but technically this story does not bust the myth.

What's wrong with us knowing about this? Do you really think that the family is going to find this site and this thread and suffer some kind of shock?

Does your local paper/tv news cover every time someone dies of a heart attack in a public place? No, of course not. This is no different. It isn't about hiding it or not letting anyone know out of respect, its that its not news, and therefore it doesn't pull in any ratings/readers.

I think it is just slightly "different", though. If it were NOT different, surely they would be more likely to pronounce death at the scene. (I'm assuming they pronounce death at the mall or the post office... but they don't do it at Disney). So that may account for some of the fascination.

On our last visit in Nov. of 2010, my DD & I were in the MK & there was a man lying on the ground in Adventureland w/ paramedics attending to him.
I am not sure what was wrong - they were diverting the crowd.
I am so sorry to hear about the person that passed away recently. :(

Uh yeah, that's what the obituaries are. It might not state the cause of death but every day we're shown who has died here.

And it's news to us because it happened at WDW. It's not like the OP was posing with the victim in a picture and posting it on the board. He was just expressing what he saw, and maybe others here saw it too.

My sympathy goes out to the family. It is always sad to lose a family member, whether at home or elsewhere.

As a medic, I can tell you all that it is highly unlikely that the person was "pronounced" on the property. The set of rules to pronounce a patient on a scene usually don't vary that much nationally. If this person went into cardiac arrest, unless they had a valid Do Not Resuscitate order, it is pretty much standard for the medics to work the patient until either they arrive at the hospital and the Dr stops efforts, or there are circumstances that the Dr gives permission over the phone/radio to the medics to stop efforts.

Actually (I get to correct Kevin Yee!), once life-saving treatment starts by paramedics, it has to continue until they get to the hospital, and a doctor is there to take over/pronounce.

Obits do not usually state how the person died, or where, unless it was a famous person. Also, obituaries are not 'reports', they are notices. Reporting is an actual news story, obituaries are more of just a notice of death. Not the same thing as saying 'A person died on Main Street USA today!'

My brother passed away two weeks ago at home from a heart attack. He was pronounced by the coroner on the scene as he had clearly passed quite some time before he was found.

The firefighter I spoke with (on the day of this incident, in fact) said that first responders *do* keep working until told to otherwise, but that telling sometimes happens by coroners over the phone. So the person is sometimes not at the hospital.

The larger point I was trying to make is that I've never heard the phrase "No one dies at the post office!" whereas I have heard the phrase "No one dies at Disney" - even from Disney trainers directly when I worked there.

You can't have it both ways - if you try to make Disney sound special (no one dies here), then it stands to reason people will think it special when it does happen after all.

I feel sorry for the family. If this was by natural causes, what a way to go having fun at the most wonderful place in the world and not knowing what hit you. Your last view could have been of the castle.

You said it before I could. Although I feel for the family, if I had to go I can assure you there is nowhere else on this planet I would rather be.

As I said, there are circumstances. This being a Disney message board, I really didn't want to get into the specifics. That being said, my sympathy to you as well.

Mere technicality. Death starts when you die, not when someone else says so.

But we are talking semantics here, and I hereby withdraw.

I was witness to the woman who collapsed at the magic Kingdom, during extremely crucial moments a cast member was there to preform CPR and the use of an AED.I can't express enough how impressed I was with this cast members professionalism in such a stressful time.If there is a simple lesson to learn from this is that a normal person can be called into service at any moment EVEN YOU.If you have the chance please learn CPR and how to use an AED.The life you save could be your own loved ones.

Thank you so much. I don't think that any future post could contribute anything more informative or beneficial to the discussion, so I will now close this thread.
