DD’s Sweet Sixteen Safari

Introduction
Since I found WDWMagic in the Spring, I have lived vicariously through many a trip report to get me excited for our trip, so I thought I would return the favor and do my very first one. Now that we are under 30 days until our trip, I thought I would go ahead and post our pre-trip report now. I hope everyone will enjoy our adventure with us!

Travel Dates: September 24 – September 28, 2008
Travel Method: AirTran Airlines and DME
Resort: All Star Music (IL’s at the Contemporary)

Cast of Characters:
Myself – 38, DH – 45, DD – 15/16 (starts the trip at 15, will end it at 16), DS – 10,
DD’s BFF – 15 (she is also my best friend’s daughter – there is 7 months between them, so basically they have been friend their whole life!), FIL – 69, and MIL – 66

Planning Phase:
During our last trip to DisneyWorld in 2004, we decided to make plans to come in 2008 to celebrate DD’s 16th Birthday. So I guess we could say we have been planning for 4 years. Okay, not really. Planning began in earnest in late 2007. We had booked a Family Suite at the ASMu in February, but in July we changed to two connecting rooms so we could take advantage of a discount code (saved $300 – yay, me!).

We booked our airlines in April, unfortunately unable to get a non-stop flight on Midwest (that ends up turning in our favor since they canceled flights to Orlando in July and the IL’s had to rebook on Delta), but we did get a decent price on AirTran for $200 a ticket. This will be our first time flying with them, so we will see how it goes. We have been a bit frustrated with the moving times of arrival, but it seems to be the state of the airline industry right now, so what can you do?

At the 180-day mark, I made our ADR’s for our trip, which causes a bit of a bump in the road. At this time, my in-laws had not made any indication they were planning on going down at the same time, so I made them for 5. About a month later they indicated they wanted to go and asked what we had planned so far. We decided to make a reservation to the Luau for our DD’s birthday (her choice) and we did, but because the in-laws waited they couldn’t get in and obviously we were not able to enlarge our party either. I was probably mean because I wouldn’t change plans to accommodate them, but hey, it’s her day not theirs. BTW, I love my in-laws, but hey they can drive me crazy at times!

The good news was that they were able to get reservations in the middle of August and we are hoping that we will be seated nearby. But then the IL’s decided they wanted to do the Hoop De Doo Revue as well and I honestly thought the fates were against them for a table of 7 less than two months before our travel plans, but bam they got Disney magic and were able to secure a reservation for a 5:00 seating. Wow, how lucky is that? Of course that meant a change of itinerary for us, but hey we can be flexible.

ADR’s:
Thursday – Spirit of Aloha Luau at 8:00 PM
Friday – Whispering Canyon Café at 8:00 AM

Saturday – 50’s Prime Time Café at 11:05 AM; Hoop De Doo Revue at 5:00 PM

Of course, the announcement of the closing of Pleasure Island also changed some of our plans as well. My husband and I have tried on 5 trips in 18 years to go and for some reason or another never made it, so we decided we had to go on the final night ever! Originally we were going to go to DisneyQuest with the kids – yeah, we find it a fun diversion and with the water & more add-on, we figure why not. So we decided since they are 16, 15 & 10, they could venture in there on their own for a few hours, while we check out Pleasure Island – though it can’t be too late of a night – we have a 5:30 AM pick up time with DME. UGH!

So after dining changes, closing announcements, quick consults of the operational calendar and the various fan sites to determine the best days to go when, we finalized our itinerary

Itinerary:
Wednesday – Travel, arriving in Orlando around 2:30 PM, Check into ASMu, Head to Epcot, and a quick evening jaunt to DTD
Thursday – Birthday Day! AK and Luau
Friday – WL for breakfast (I can almost taste that skillet!), BB and MNSSHP at MK
Saturday – DHS, Hoop De Doo Revue, PI (adults) / DQ (kids)
Sunday – Travel (Ahh, do we really have to go home?)

At the 90 day mark, we made our traditional countdown calendar for the fridge to start counting down the days; I live on WDWMAGIC at this point; and we have most of our packing list together.

At 45-days, we made that final payment (Yahoo!), began our Disney Movie Countdown at 39 days and now we are 27 days and counting. We have a fold-up table that we set-up in the living room that we are starting to pile stuff to pack, which we usually begin about 2 weeks our from the trip.

Thoughts:
We are extremely blessed to have this opportunity to take our oldest on this trip to celebrate this passage of life. I can remember being sixteen was such an amazing time as you approach adulthood and possibilities shimmer in front of you. It truly humbles us that this trip with her family and best friend was our DD’s fondest wish. She has a big heart, a sarcastic sense of humor and is wise beyond her years. Okay, I can’t help getting sentimental; she is the first of our children approaching the edge of our nest!

We hope this trip will be full of love, laughter, memories to cherish for a lifetime and the magic only Disney can make happen!

Stay tuned for Day 1 of our Safari!

I hope you have the trip of a lifetime! Cherish the next few years with your children. They will be gone before you know it.

We tried to go to WDW as often as possible when our children were between 10 and 20 because those were the years when it was so hard to have special times together. As you'll see, WDW always provided the magic to make it a time of bonding and happy memories.

It sounds like your daughter is very special and I wish her a very happy 16th birthday!

Can't wait to read your trip report.

My daughter thanks you both for your birthday wishes. She is truly excited for the trip, in fact, I'm not sure she will be able to survive the suspense.

Sounds like a great plan in place. I don't remember if you said where you were staying, but if on site, I suggest calling them back and making a note that this is for your DD's birthday. Reiterate that at check-in. Also if they don't have it for you at check in, get a birthday pin at guest relations at the first park you go to and have her wear it all vacation.

You may very well be surprised at the additional magic that comes her way.

Consider sending a note to a board member here, Rainfully about your visit date to Spirit. She works at the show and MAY be able to provide something additional if she is looking for you.

There is quite a bit new since your last visit, I imagine you have that listed for your prioritization. Maybe get the girls involved in identifying one or two must do's at each park to be sure they get done.

That time of year is great, won't be too crowded.
Did you consider doing MNSSHP?

Thanks for the info Tigger! We did let them know when we made the reservation for the room (ASMu) and our reservations at the Luau that it was a birthday, but plan to chase that with a call about a week ahead of time at the resort.

Rainfully was really sweet in already assisting me about vegetarian options at the Luau and Hoop De Doo Revue for DD's BFF, so she has already shared her magic.

There is definitely some do's on our list, but we are just excited to be there, so if we miss one or two, we won't let it get us down.

We are indeed doing the MNSSHP on Friday (have our tickets tucked away) and we are really excited about that because we are big Halloween fans in our house.

The forum has really been a great support system in providing useful information and a great diversion on the days I needed a Disney fix!

Less than a week away!

We are really starting to get pumped for the trip now.

Over the weekend we did the single digit dance and began packing bags. We are half way packed in our house, not sure about the IL's or guest yet. If they aren't they had better get cracking! :)

Of course, we are keeping an eye on the hurricane tracker each day to get a glimmer ahead, along with a daily visit to weather.com for a look at the 10-day tracker. Not that makes any sense because we know the weather changes from the forecast on a regular basis, but hey, it's something else to do to keep Disney in the forefront of our minds! We are not worried about rain, we trudge through it all the time at the park, so we won't be scattering out of the park when it rains.

Today, I made arrangements for our guest's meal at the Luau as she is a vegetarian. Thanks to Rainfully I was full prepared for our call, which I think the CM really appreciated. :D I also spoke with our guest's mom, who is also my best friend of 25 years ( when did that much time slip by us?!?), and we made arrangements for her DD to be dropped off the night before our trip and for us to drop her off at her father's (divorced couple) on our return. We also discussed the all important signed & notarized authorizations for their DD to travel with us. (Folks, if you have someone else's child traveling with you, I can't stress how important this to have to protect all parties!)

So now we just have to finish packing, pick up some last minute things this weekend and beg for time to pass until the trip and for the time to slow down during the trip!

Thanks for reading my ramble! I'm getting so excited I can barely contain myself. :)

Bouncing, Bouncing, with Disney Excitement – The Night Before the Trip

(Note, sorry folks, I have been slammed with work since our arrival back, so I haven't had a chance to download pics, but hope to tonight, so I can post our trip report with some photos, but here is a tease about the night before!)

As you can imagine our household was buzzing with complete excitement for our trip for weeks. Depending on how you look at it, I had been swamped with work the last couple of weeks and that helped pass the time for me. However by 1:00 pm on my final day of work, I was buzzing with excitement and could barely contain myself. Especially when DH was texting me that he only had an hour left of work – the bum! I had got up at seven in the morning to do online check-in with AirTran – man, I love that process!

Anyway, I managed to escape my cubicle cell around 4:00, stopped by and picked up the DD a birthday card, a chocolate bar to tuck in the card, a book to read on the plane and a small wallet to throw into my backpack during the trip at Target. By the way, would you believe that there was only one 16th birthday design card?!? Doesn’t anyone else know how big this birthday is? Geez!

I arrived home to find out that the DD’s BFF was running a little behind and had not yet arrived, but she got to our place about 30 minutes later. Now the party was getting starting. My IL’s called to say they were stopping by to drop of DD’s birthday presents, so they wouldn’t have to travel with them. They were on their way to a hotel near the airport as they live about an hour away and we live like 10 minutes away. We offered to have them stay, but they didn’t want to inconvenience us. They arrived about 30 minutes later, loaded with excitement and a few goodies for the birthday girl! After a short stay, they headed out and we fixed dinner – Mickey Macaroni, Cheese, and Broccoli and for dessert Mickey Head Brownies with Ice Cream and Chocolate Syrup.

After blowing up a portable bed so the girls could sleep in the front room, and the DS opted to sleep on the couch, DH and I headed off to bed at 10:00 pm for our early wake-up of 4:30 am.
