DCL Buys Unfinished Mega Cruise Ship - Genting Golden Dream ???

A massively priced cruise ship that essentially was in bankruptcy protocols going into a long worldwide recession?

I’ve seen casinos in Atlantic City go for “cheap” under similar conditions

“Cheap” is not strong enough
Ahh gotcha. Yea everyone praising this buy but i think im in your camp where this is nothing to go gaga over esp if they are dumping another billion into it

Even if they dumped another billion into it would still be less than their other builds for a more valuable asset.
I get the point but right now in this climate value is something that is not black or white. Especially for a company that may or may not be having financial issues. They may have received “value” but at what cost elsewhere & was this something they really planned on doing?

DPEP is not having any financial issues.

5th gate? Just build a new resort Bob.

Who else was gonna buy it? MSC, Carnival, Royal, Norwegian all want class-based boats for efficiency and less consumer confusion. The specialty cruise lines would never want a boat that big (and frankly I’m not sure Norwegian or Carnival would either).

The only logical buyer is a cruise line that operates like a specialty cruise line but still attracts huge numbers of guests.

Oh, and it needs a strong balance sheet post-Covid to take on a $1bn+ investment.

Disney was probably bidding against 1-2 scrap yards and literally no one else.

Even still, I will say this one time and only because he’s gone, good job here Bob Chapek.

They can name the poop deck on this ship the Chapek deck.
I love the text in the disclosure. "In November 2022, the Company purchased a partially completed ship for an amount that is not material."

It was so cheap that the accountants and lawyers didn't even feel compelled to write down the actual dollar amount they paid for it. Just "not material."

Absolutely savage deal.

Disney cruise line made about $100M in profit per boat in 2019, the last pre-Covid year. So even if you assume they make the same profit rate on this boat (they‘ll do better, because it’s bigger, but let’s assume), they’ll make back $41M in less than 5 months.
