19. Past Lives
18. Are You There God, It's Me Margaret
17. Across the SpiderVerse
16. Barbie
15. Blackberry
14. Priscilla
13. Oppenheimer
12. Saltburn
11. The Color Purple
10. Poor Things
9. Anatomy of a Fall
8. Talk To Me
7. May December
6. The Boy and the Heron
5. Bottoms
4. Godzilla Minus One
3. The Holdovers
2. Asteroid City
1. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3

The "going against current trends thing I was talking about is the fact that 2023 is probably going to go down as THE year that the superhero movie bubble burst. It's wild to me that it's also the first (and in all likelihood last ;) ) year that an MCU film tops my list. It's the kind of contradiction that I think fits very well into the spirit of Guardians as a franchise.

Nutcracker Review

Well, I've been keeping it for 2 months by now so I think it’s time to tell you all about The Nutcracker. It was transcendent! My local ballet company set the story in the present day, added an orchestral rendition of Green Onions to the first act, changed the Chinese Dance to be more authentic (They had the Lion and Dragon Dances!), and added an African dance during intermission. The 15 minute intermission had 5 minutes to go to the restroom and 10 minutes of West African song and dance (Forgot where they were representing, but I think it was Ghana) for those who stayed in the theatre, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was fun! I literally got up and danced during intermission! I wish you all were there, being a respectful crowd during Act One, then getting up and dancing and singing along to a West African song you don’t understand the lyrics to during intermission, only to return to being a respectful audience from Act Two to the end. You would probably enjoy it given you like:

Jazz

Weird 1960s Instrumental Music

Chinese Song+Dance

Dance

Tap

Slavic Classical Music

Fighting in DANCE FORM

Pure unadulterated chaos

The Undisputed Truth (Band)

People in the most LGBTQ+ outfits ever

West African Song And Dance (Intermission only!)

Dancing To Music You Don’t Understand

I finished off 2023 having seen a total of 169 new releases from the year. It’s easily the most I’ve ever seen in a single year and it was a part of my friends and I challenging each other to the “100 movie challenge.”

I’ll be revealing my top 5 at the Golden Tikis award show in February, but I’ll also be doing a livestream at some point going through all 169 movies I watched worst to best, so keep your eyes peeled if you care at all about that sort of thing!

I saw one movie in theaters this year - Oppenheimer, so it was the best and worst film of the year for me!

And may be late to the party but I did see Guardians 3 over the winter break thanks to some of our rank lists here. I can definitely see why people love this movie. There were many aspects that I loved about it.

- The High Evolutionary is one of the best Marvel villains. He's not sympathetic, he's just evil and very well acted.
- Everything with Rocket was emotional but also extremely well done.
- I thought each of the Guardians played a role and it's something that in the finale you want to have that proper send off. Definitely felt like a satisfying ending even if the real world circumstances behind the film's production delayed/altered perhaps what was supposed to happen.

It's definitely top tier MCU like all the Guardians films, but I can't say it's my favorite of the 3. it's weird because to me a lot of it had to do with the emotional weight of Rocket's story being so good.
A lot of the jokes didn't land as effectively in this one because unlike other Guardians films where they had to save the day but had fun along the way, nothing about this setup to me was "fun."

Rocket literally has a kill-switch that will go off in 48 hours and we are joking around in colorful suits about which button talks to what suit. Or we are spending way too much of the run-time on the Orgocorp.

And the emotional beats were laid throughout the film so you kept cutting back from young Rocket and his friends being tortured, then to the Guardians joking around, which is what makes them so great, but felt disconnected to me. Both the previous Guardians films had emotional moments but were towards the end and were timed right like Yondu or Groot.

May end up changing with another viewing or two, but I would say it's comfortably here.

MCU Ranking
1. Avengers: Infinity War
2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
3. Guardians of the Galaxy
4. Spider-Man: No Way Home
5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2
6. Iron Man
7. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3
8. Captain America: Civil War
9. Thor Ragnarok
10. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

So as you may know, Steamboat Willie is in the Public Domanain as of today. This means you can do anything you want with that version of Mickey, but you cannot use any elements that developed afterwards (so no using his morden design and the like). This means that you can't use Mickey's iconic voice. Which leads into today's (very late) question of the day:

What new voice would you give to Mickey?
(My choice: Mel Blanc)

My friend and I will be going over (at least a good chunk) of my movies ranked. It is on the More Pooh Talk Channel but is not affiliated, I just don't have streaming set on any other channels lol.

Tune in if you want, or watch later or ignore it all together. Whatever you choose to do, here it is!
