I love it.

I agree its a lot of money, but I really have enjoyed the two magazines so far. The articles are very well done. I miss the old Disney Magazine, but this one IS better...

The whole thing seems like a scam to me.I purchased a copy last month on my last trip to WDW.Most expensive magazine I have ever purchased and I wish I could return it.Full of crap I already knew.Sorry I dont really see what you get for your money expensive magazine and some litograph wow where do I sign up.Give me a 20% discount in all the Disney parks and special perks and then we are talking:shrug:I used to get the Disney magazine not that expensive and was just as good and you got a free lith in every magazine.Come on Disney give us a better deal.

I know better off in the bank.I also love Disney but throwing money at Disney is not the way to show it.I give this hole D23 thing five years tops. Then the powers that be will be off to some other scam to take money from us true Disney freaks.Walt would be proud of his company.

I have thought about it, but am concerned that the only events I saw announced were at DL. I've never been there and unless I take 2 years off from WDW to save for airfare, I don't see a trip there in my future.

Hi all.

I emailed Disney UK regarding D23 asking if there would be any benefits for members outside the US or a club setup n other regions. I also quoted a link to some of the events for the rest of the summer ALL in the U.S.

from here: http://o-meon.com/pages/news&features/2009/05-14_D23 Schd-1.html

Charter Members-Only Summer 2009 Events:

The fun begins with a special pin trading event, followed by an all new Disney stage show and a screening of the new Disney-Pixar short Partly Cloudy and the highly anticipated and critically acclaimed Up! And it wouldn’t be a D23 event without a few other special surprises and guests!

July 17 D23 presents Disneyland, U.S.A. FREE
(Anaheim, CA) -- Celebrate Disneyland’s 54th Anniversary with a special screening of Walt Disney’s recently restored 1956 “People and Places” featurette Disneyland, U.S.A., as well as a panel discussion including Imagineer Tony Baxter, Disney Legend and Chief Archivist Dave Smith, and Disney Studios Film Archivist Ed Hobelman. The event will take place at Disneyland’s Team Disney Anaheim Theater and will be followed by a D23 Member reception.

Sept TBD The Walt Disney Family Museum Preview FREE
(San Francisco, CA) – Prior to its October 2009 Grand Opening, D23 members will have the opportunity to experience The Walt Disney Family Museum, celebrating the life and achievements of the man who raised animation to an art, transformed the film industry, tirelessly pursued innovation, and created a global and distinctly American legacy. This special preview will be hosted by the Museum’s Executive Director Richard Benefield. Dates and details will be available soon.

No offence to those signed up outside the U.S but you seem to be paying for the U.S members benefits. If they changed this to have benefits for the west end Disney musicals (in London) or events at the other parks I think membership would increase dramatically.

The California stuff makes up only part of the perks. . . also a good value if you hold an AP and go often the the Florida parks as several free events have been lined up for D23 members to enjoy at Disney parks.

I'd like to mention a couple other expensive things D23 is doing with member money. One is a sponsorship of Walt Disney: One Man's Dream at the Disney Hollywood Studios. Most Walt Disney fans enjoy having this exhibit around for viewing, and by supporting D23, you are helping ensure its continued existence at the DHS park.

Another is the first ever Disney Expo - a huge event for Disney fanatics. It was created to tap into the interest of hard core Disney fans and it is no coincidence its existence coincides with the creation of D23.

Then why sell tickets?
Also, why make everyone, including D23 members have to buy them?

And, in reality, D23 isn't sponsoring One man's Dream at all... I mean really...
they are using One man's Dream to advertise D23.

That's all fine and dandy if Disney did not have theme parks or offices outside the U.S. But we all know that Disney is a multinational corporation, with Disney resorts/parks stage shows etc in other parts of the world.

I just think the D23 in it's current state completely isolates fans of the mouse, outside of the U.S.

If there was a D23 in Europe or Tokyo or Hong Kong and have benefits for those territories.

I'm going slightly off topic in a way but Blizzard entertainment (again an American Company) held expos in the U.S and Europe I can't see why Disney do the same.

I am not a paid shill for D23, so this is my last post in this thread :D but they are selling tickets to recoup the expense of the show and to make money. As Walt Disney once said, "Let us not forget it all started with money." Or maybe it was Roy who said that. Seriously, Disney started D23 to make money, to tap into a resource - the wallet of the hard core fan. Who else is going to spend between one and four days at a convention center listening to Imagineers and corporate suits sell their product? But there is no shortage of Disney fans the world over who would love the opportunity. And as a perk for paying the freight, your admission media is discounted if you are a member of D23. Hey, you would have gone anyway, and now it is less expensive.

As for One Man's Dream, does anyone know for a fact that D23 monies are not going into sponsorship of the attraction? I thought the sign said "Presented by D23." Typically, that involves a sponsorship fee, does it not? I cannot say with any authority that D23 pays for the signage. Admittedly, that is my guess but there is precedent for one division paying rights to another within the parks. Example - the steam engine trains at Disneyland owned by WED Enterprises or whatever - Disneyland paid for the rights to use the trains.

D23 is available to international citizens. Presumably, some of them travel to the USA to visit a Disney park and can plan a trip around some of the D23 enticements if they are so inclined. The wise thing for D23 to do would be to offer some D23 events at the parks outside the USA. Hopefully they will.

I still havent been able to join. I did send an email a few months back having a little moan, as not only do we get charged the international shipping, but if we do buy anything extra then no doubt we will get charged import duties as well. I took well over 6 weeks for a reply, just confirming that yes thats how much int. shipping is, and yes we would be liable for import duties.

I might join. I just want to see where the club is headed. I'm sure at some point they will add more and more perks over time. The actual shelling out of the $75 isn't really a problem for me. My issue is the basic cost/benefit aspect. Am I really going to see enough of a benefit to justify the cost? Maybe. I think that at some point this year I will join, but I just wanna see about where this club is headed. I'm sure after the Charter Membership period ends, there will be a new, lower price (Probably a Premium membership and a regular membership).

I think it'll be really something to cherish within years to come.
But it's the $70 price tag that has halted that thought. Plus, some of the events take place halfway around the world.

No, the wisest thing for them to do would be to reduce the exorbitant mailing costs for each and every article bought by members outside the USA (eg $50 to mail a pin or a tshirt to the UK, even though it costs the same $50 to mail a whole years subscription of D23 and the gift). I am a member and love what I've had so far; I would love a tshirt for my holiday this year but I draw the line at adding $50 to the cost of it. It would be a good idea to sell D23 merchandise at One Mans Dream (on production of your D23 membership card) :(

Don't know .. but if you get small items via, for example, Amazon, there's no tax and the postage is minimal. I haven't got past the shock of the $50!!
