He has an extensive collection of historical memorabilia, books and photographs. So he did two pictorial books on Philadelphia history.
"Philadelphia's River Wards" which is the history of the areas along the Delaware from the very beginnings of the city, even before it was a city.
and "The Construction of City Hall" which is just that, amazing pictures taken during the construction fo City Hall.
He has several projects going now. And he is really a great tour guide when we go down to the historic district and the surrounding areas. I see things I've never noticed before each time we go.

I wonder if the library has either of those... maybe I'll check that on Monday...

I definitely agree with you there. I don't know how my parents generation handled it when their husbands (and sometimes wives) were gone overseas and completely out of communication except for letters - I just can't imagine! Even with all our technology today, we still have so many families so far apart, and so many kids with a parent so far away!

My dad got his draft notice just days before their wedding. They had practically no time together before he was taken away for 4 years! I couldn't imagine it.
And now, like you said, families are torn apart by that mess in the Middle East. Every day must be torture when you're worried about a loved one in a war zone.

The public library usually has them. They're put out by Arcadia Publishing.
You've probably seen Arcadia books before. They're paperbacks and the covers are usually done in sepia tones. Their topics are usually specific to the local area. In other words, you wouldn't find an Arcadia book about NYC in a Philadelphia store or library - only books specifically related to the area.

I was going to check the school's library... they have a lot...

Maybe they will have them. The City Hall book is co-authored with a friend. But the River Wards book is all his.

I actually remember seeing some books on Philadelphia's history on display yesterday...

I didn't have time to look, though.
Besides... if I start getting too many books out at the same time I forget when they're due, and end up rushing to find them when my name shows up in the announcements.:lookaroun

So, is that what your DH does? He's an author? Or is it something he does on the side?

Well, he was a carpenter for the city for many years. While he worked there he developed an interest in photography and did freelance work on the side. Then, when computers became popular he became a whiz at that and combined his love of photography with computers and learned just about everything there is to know about both. He left his city job in the late 80's after an injury and then really pursured his other interests and also became an avid Philadelphia history buff. The author thing has just been the past few years. It's amazing because we work together on his books. He also is starting to branch out to documentaries and does presentations to groups on his history projects.
Sorry you asked?

At least now I know I'd get along with your husband. :lookaroun Even if he'd probably get tired of recounting the history before I'd get tired of listening. :lookaroun
