Cricut Input?

The wife has droppped hints that she'd like a Cricut for her birthday. I've been looking, but the cost of the Expressions machine is $500. That seems a little excessive. I came across an infomercial for a scaled down machine. Here is a link: https://www.4cricut.com/vcc/provocraft/cricut/453591/.

It's half the price, but it still uses the same cartridges as the expression. The biggest difference is the physical size. The expression can use 12x12 paper while the smaller machine uses sheets about 6x8.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Does anyone have any comments?

I use the regular Cricut, not the Expressions, and I really like it. The Expressions wasn't out yet when I bought mine so I didn't have both options. However, I'm happy enough with the original model that I don't feel the need to run out and buy the new one. If I were buying for the first time though, I'm not sure what I would do.

That price for the Expressions is really high though. Do you live near a Walmart? Our Walmart is selling the Expressions right now for less than $300, which I think would be totally worth paying to get the larger size.

What do you think she'll be using the Cricut for? If it's mainly just scrapbooking, I'm sure she'd be very pleased with the regular Cricut. Though, if she's wanting to work on other projects in which she'd need larger letters/characters, she may want the Expression.

I have the regular Cricut and just love it! It's all I need really. Sure, it'd be great to have the option to cut out larger figures, but I'm happy with what I have.

I agree with Coree though. That price is way too high. Are you looking at the Cricut Web site? If so, I've noticed that most items on there are the most expensive you'll find anywhere. Cartridges are about $80 when you could easily find them for about $60 at places like WalMart or even Hobby Lobby (which can also be expensive). Shop around. Your local craft store (JoAnn's, Micheals, hobby Lobby, etc.) is sure to carry them, call and see what prices they have.

Good luck! And, you ARE a great husband for wanting to get her a Cricut! Well done!! :sohappy:

The price for the Expressions was from the Cricut website. I started there first. I have checked my local Micheal's, but they don't carry the machines on a regular basis. I had checked Amazon, but even at $375 it's still high. She also hinted at the Disney cartridges. I know of two that she wants: characters and fonts. If I went with Expressions the cost would be: $375+80+80=$535 plus shipping. If I go with the smaller machine, its: $250+$140+$10=$400. The infomercial cartridge price was $140 for two.

She currently has a Xlon, Xron or something like that. But she hates it. She has to hook it up to a computer. That's just more stuff she has to transport. She really wants a self-contained machine.

Does all this make sense?

I'd go with the regular Cricut then, again, depending on her main use of it. $140 for two Disney cartridges isn't bad. That's what I would have paid without my coupon at Hobby Lobby. Though I have seen the Cricut for $199 in some stores. Other than Michael's, is there another store near by?

Joann's has the Expression for $329 on the Web site. Hobby Lobby links you to a site that has the regular Cricut for $194.

I agree that she probably doesn't need the expressions machine. I have the regular and it works great for me. The only thing that I think would be nice about the bigger one, would be that I wouldn't have to cut down my 12x12 paper and would be able to use less paper that way. I don't really want to cut anything bigger than my machine cuts it.

As far as cartidges go, I'm sure she's going to be really happy with the disney cartridges, I have them and love them. I know there are others on here that have posted links to places where you can get the cartridges cheaper than most. Maybe they will post again for you, but you can certainly find them for 50-70 dollars. It pays to shop around.

And all hubby's should be like you! :sohappy:

i checked that site out about the informercial. walmart carries the smaller version for 184. the price from the informercial seemed a bit high for me.

now i think if my hubby bought me the smaller one and a cartridge i would (first probably drop dead but) LOVE it.

i also read recently (can't remember where) that someone had a sale on the smaller ones for 170..joannes maybe.

i think if you check around for them you can get them cheaper. michaels sometimes has coupons and sales. there was just a sale for 40%, we are checking right now to see if it is still good. hold on. we'll get back to ya.

sorry couldn't find it. but check around on those prices.

I checked two of the local Wal-Marts last night. Neither had the machine. Nor did they have any of the Disney cartridges. So, I ordered through the infomercial website. I was able to get the machine, two cartridges and shipping for $390. It's good, and I can rest easier knowing that I won't have to be dashing all around town looking for a machine.

I gave the wife the Cricut machine. She wents nuts. She spent close to 8 hours just playing with it. There were paper pieces all over our living room. The next day she went to Micheals and pickup a special rolling case and additional cartridges. That night, her sister and friend came over. For four hours all they did was cut shapes.
