Pre-Trip Crazy lunatic might be taking a solo trip

Some dialogue from the Phil and Buddy household:

Me: So, you said when there were five new things open, we can go back.

Monster: BLAAAHHHHHGGGHHHHFFHGFDSTREEJJHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Me: What was that?

Monster: There aren't five new things open, so forget it!

Me: I want a divorce.

Monster:
You can't have a divorce because we are not even married! (side note - he will not marry me because I have a zillion dollars in debt that he is afraid of inheriting if I get hit by a bus.)

Me: Okay whatever, but there are enough new attractions there that I get to go again.

Monster: Have fun!

Me: Well maybe I'll take a solo trip.

Monster: Well, maybe you should!

Me: You don't care about slinky dog coaster or Toy Story Land?

Monster: No, because I am not five years old!

Me: GRRRRRRRRRR..............

Hmmmm......so I am seriously thinking of a brief (3 night?) solo trip. Have never done that before, but if it happens, October, maybe?

Anyone wanna hang out with a crazy loon? :)

I haven’t done it often, but the feeling silly wears off after a little while. After all, not everyone there thinks you’re a child molester.

Plus, you can always occupy yourself on your phone if you feel momentarily awkward - like with TR updates and political rants.

I don’t know if we are activating the AP’s by October but it’s possible!

But why does everyone love solo trips so much? I think I can pull this off, but I also think I might feel silly being there by myself. It's not that I have no friends. It's just that I have no friends that are really into Disney. Grr.
Going solo means you can ride what you want to ride, stop in a shop and take your time without worrying holding anyone else up, eat where you want to eat...etc.

Granted there is nothing like going with an SO or family member, but there is definitely nothing like going solo.

Have fun!

I like solo trips because I like doing what I want to do when I want to do it. And I can also stop and take as many pictures as I want without feeling like I'm holding someone up. I did miss my husband during my solo trip that coincided with Food and Wine, there was a lot I wanted to eat but couldn't. If he had been there we could have shared dishes so we could try more. For some reason strangers didn't want to share food with me. ;)

As everyone else has said, you have the ability to do what you want, when you want, without worrying about keeping anybody else happy. Single rider lines are your friend and finding hard to get FP is easier as a party of 1.

I felt super awkward the first time I went by myself and thought that surely everybody was staring at me and wondering why I was alone. It wore off by the end of that day and now I don’t even think twice about it.

Disney is Disney.. you’ll have a blast no matter what!

On the contrary, you have a whole FORUM of friends who are really into Disney. I bet there's bound to be someone there when you want to go that you could tag along with at least part of the time....probably multiple people. I won't be there until 2019 or I'd say you could hang out with my crowd. We might have up to 24 people in our group though, so it probably wouldn't be much fun for you, though if it's just my brother and his husband's family with us, they are an absolute blast and would totally welcome you. If you don't want the awkwardness of a solo trip, I'm sure you have plenty of other options just with the people on this forum. Personally, the freedom of a solo trip appeals to me, but I have a sort of anxiety about eating alone, feeling like everyone is staring at me and judging me. But you don't strike me as someone with social anxiety at all, so I'm betting you'd be fine on your own.

I echo how everyone else said that Soloing is awesome! I have my 5th solo adventure coming up this December, and my 6th is booked for next year! You go at your own pace, do what you want to do, eat where you want, rest when you want. You accomplish so much more than when you're with someone else because you're not waiting around for anyone. There is nothing to feel awkward about, believe me when I tell you, no one around you is paying a darn bit of attention to what you're doing or who you're (not) with. Go and have a blast!

I always thought I'd feel super awkward going to the parks alone - everyone I knew thought it would be weird and depressing - "I'd never do that" I heard a few times. Guess what. It was fabulous! I love my husband and we have fun in the parks together, but it did feel very relaxing and freeing not to worry about someone else - what they would like/not like, are they bored, should I really "waste time" stopping or lingering in this store. Is he hungry, tired, sick of the crowds and just not telling me because he doesn't want to ruin my fun, etc.

I wandered, people-watched, drank and ate whatever I felt like without any planning. The entire day floated by in a happy, relaxing haze. Would I want to go alone every trip - probably not. But I certainly would do a few more.

And just a little bit of wine:

At the table, a Buddy and a Philmonster.

Conversation went a little something like this:

Buddy (swigging wine): Ya know, there's like two pages of people on my Disney board telling me to take this solo trip.

Monster: Ugh, don't these people have anything better to do?!

Buddy: Well I think I'm gonna do it.

Monster: Do what?

Buddy: A solo trip. You know, three or four days.

Monster: Oh really? And when the hell do you think you're gonna take this little solo trip.

Buddy: Just whenever the hell I choose! Maybe an October trip.

Monster: Please. You can't pull together all that money by October!

Buddy: It'll be a bargain trip since I won't have to pay for all your drinks!!!

Monster: Oh yeah?? Well if you go to Disney, then I'm going to Iceland!!!

Buddy: ICELAND?!?!?!?!?!?

Monster: Yeah, Iceland!

Buddy: What are you even talking about? You don't know anything about Iceland.

Monster: Exactly.

Buddy: I don't even think you've ever said the word "Iceland" since I've known you. Where is this coming from??

Monster: I just thought of it. Everyone loves Iceland.

Buddy: Have you finally lost what little is left of your mind? What are you going to do in Iceland??

Monster: Whatever I want. I'll eat. I'll drink. I'll look at a glacier.

Buddy: You are not going to Iceland.

Monster: If you go to Disney, I am.

Buddy: You don't even have your passport.

Monster: I'll get one.

Buddy: Stop being ridiculous. You're just trying to get me out of going on a solo trip.

Monster: No, no. Go on your stupid solo trip. I don't know who you think is gonna save you if you have another little lock out incident, cause I'll be ice fishing.

Buddy: You're not going ice fishing. You're gonna sit on the couch and watch the cat.

Monster: That's what you think. I'm going to the fjords.

Buddy: Oh for God's sake. Just come to Disney. You can go to Iceland at EPCOT, same thing.

Monster: That's Norway, you fool. Post that on your Disney board and those people'll run you out of town on a rail.

Buddy: Yeah well it's still Scandinavia, so same idea. You'll have a shot or ten of Aquavit and you'll think you're really there.

Monster: Nope. Iceland. If you go solo, I go Icelandic.

Buddy: Fine!

Monster: FINE!

Buddy: FINE!!!!!!

And, scene.

I don't know what he's up to. It seems like he's trying to get me out of taking a solo trip by threatening a solo trip of his own to freaking Iceland??? I mean, what the.....?!?!

Well, I think I'm going to call his bluff and book something. I can pull off a short Disney trip much easier than he can pull off traveling to Scandinavia to ride around on a reindeer or something.

Hopefully, I'll have an update soon. 😜

What if you "plussed" the WDW vacation itinerary with a side trip to the Kennedy Space Center, and a ride up to Daytona for the beach one day? That might be enough incentive for Philmonster to join you. Maybe he's just looking for something a bit different.

No, he's just being defiant. Remember, he refused to go to WDW on that recent Busch Gardens trip. 😬

Mutually assured vacation

I may do a solo trip in October as well. Wife has a girls trip planned with our daughters and friends.

Seriously. I’d be willing to participate in a Go Fund Me to make a Buddy solo trip happen. Seriously the best entertainment going!
Aww, thanks, but I don't know how entertaining I would be on a solo trip. Especially my first solo trip. And all the crazy people talk to Phil and not me. You know, that crazy old woman who wanted to dance with him at EPCOT and crazy guy at Victoria Falls who was married with a wife in bed upstairs but was sexually harassing Philmonster to the point that he left and went to bed. I'm not saying I wouldn't fall into Bay Lake or something, but don't hold your breath. ;)
