Crane at Cinderella Castle

No thanks, that Christmas overlay is tacky. I'll take a few months of the crane stalking Guest photos because the end result is stunning!
Odd that since I've had many people asking me if it'll move since they're concerned it'll be in their photos.

I did tell them it drops before evening.

This is the start of the Christmas Lights to the Castle...Expect it to be there for a good 3 months or so for the start of Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party starting Nov 7th...

couldn't they use the castle projection effects to do a good Christmas effect?

I hate the crane. Lets see...it's mid-August and they probably won't be done with it until around Thsnksgiving...so about three months. Then, after New Years, they bring the ugly thing back for about another three months. Seriously, I think in the past few years I've seen the crane up more than not.

They need to come up with a better solution for the lights.

The only thing they do is add a Holiday Finale to Celebrate the Magic...The only other time where you have to Horrify the sight of a Projected version of the 25th anniversary Castle cake for a tribute..

The crane comes down waaaaay before Thanksgiving.

How would that work exactly? I'm not familiar with the specifics of LED technology so all I can picture is them installing giant panels hung across the castle.
The LEDs would be permenently installed by being imbedded in the actual castle structure. During daylight hours they would virtually disappear.

Thousands of RGB LEDs set into the brickwork pattern. Hardly visible in daylight.

Could they have gotten the same ice effect, though?

There's a Cheesecake Factory restaurant near where I work, and it has a tower as part of its facade. At night, little LED lights sparkle in it. By day they're invisible. It's an awesome effect.

I don't know much how about how long a process like embedding thousands and thousands of lights in the castle would take, but wouldn't they have to put a scrim up or something and it would take a pretty long time? Disneyland put a scrim around their castle in preparation for the 60th, and this seems like it would be more involved.

They didn't put up a scrim when they painted it a few years ago, just drained the water

I think we all know that Walt would absolutely plotz if he saw that crane next to the castle in full view of the guests. Isn't there any way the lights could be added after park hours?

Since Walt was dead before the MK even opened and the technology to put up the type of Christmas lights used today didn't even exist yet, it is impossible for you or anyone else to know what Walt would think. He might think this is a great idea to give his customers such a decorated treat during the Christmas season.

The amount of time the crane is up to install the lights is being majorly dramatized here. Sure, August is early to start this, but the Halloween festivities start in September and this is traditionally a slower month. Same goes for January when they take them down.

The crane has been up longer some years, but that was for maintenance that needed to be done regardless. I certainly understand that the crane gets in the way of that perfect castle picture, but other than that, I find it fairly harmless (and we sometimes catch it during our summer and winter trip).

I liked the Castle Cake, I even bought the t-shirt(wish I could find it). I love, loove LOOOVE the icy castle lights, well worth the crane and probably the only castle pictures I am still taking after all of these years. Besides the castle lights are all we have left of the major holiday light displays...Epcot arches are gone and the Osbourne Lights are gone.

Much is made about the sad old crane, but, it is a reasonable method of doing the light decoration. What they do can be changed if they want too, not a permanent part of the castle. Who knows if 5 years from now they have a whole new, better idea about what to do with the castle decoration. I don't understand the big whoop about it anyway. So it's up there for a couple of months a year, at least, unlike, the DL overlays they don't close down the attraction for months every year to completely ruin the integrity of HM. How much actual time do you spend actually just looking at the castle anyway. If you want a picture without it in it, all you have to do is photo it from a different angle. The benefit reaped from the display every year far outweighs the minor visual problem of the crane.

I don't get it either. The people who complain are probably some of the people who would complain if there were no lights on the castle during the holidays. My real point is that people should stop saying that he/she/they/everyone knows what Walt would say.
