Um, cross the street and you'll find a book store, a toy store and a number of shops with lots of history and culture. Can't say as to whether there are specifics of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, but there's a lot more to UK than just the Rose & Crown!

The Mcdonald's conundrum

MontyMon said:
Pretty slim premise... Although they may have not had McDonalds at the time, the U.S. has been at war with Germany, Japan and Italy, and then there was this "Cold War" with Russia for a few years... :animwink:

Technically, Russia had McDonalds before the wall came down.

Argentina and the U.K. had a war recently.

The former Yugoslav countries had a rather nasty civil war.

McDonalds as peacekeeper doesn't seem to hold up to scrutiny

I apologize if I did not make myself clear, which I admittedly did not.

No two countries ever went to war against each other if they both actually had a McDonald's at the time. That is where I was unclear. Yes, America and Germany went to war in WWII, and England and Argentina went to war over the Falklands about 25 years ago. But Germany and Argentina did not have a McDonald's at the time. I believe they both do now. McDonald's came later to one side or the other, (and didn't exist at all during WWII). Yugoslavia had civil war, not a war against another country; and the Soviet Union did not go to war against another country. It all just split up.

This is not because McDonald's is a peacekeeper. It is because McDonald's will not open a franchise unless the American/Western Work Ethic and middle class is available to support and work at a McD's franchise. Suppliers are also needed, and a certain amount of political stability is a prerequisite to such an investment.

Therefore, it is the middle class, the work ethic, the stable government, and the suppliers which are major prerequisites for McDonald's to take the financial risk and pioneer a new restaurant. Such countries are unlikely to go to war against each other, and only rarely have a civil war that usually ends quickly and peacefully, (although Yugoslavia was a major exception, but I do not know if Yugoslavia had a McDonald's before the trouble began in the early 90's). War with other countries usually follows from poverty, unstable or despotic governments, and inefficient economies. McDonald's would be unlikely to open in such a country. Of course, the world would be a much simpler place if peace followed the opening of a McDonald's; we could simply subsidize a McDonald's in every world capital. But it is actually the congenial peaceful relationship which provides the proper environment for a McDonald's to open.

Therefore, Disney would do well to look at the presence of a McDonald's as one of a myriad issues in deciding if EPCOT should allow them a pavilion. It would be a sign of a Western work ethic, a strong government and economy, and a middle class. Such a country would be more likely to support a World Showcase pavilion, especially over the long-term.

It sounds like an oversimplistic rule-of thumb, but it holds true. I assume there will be an exception some day, but I sure hope not. So burger down everyone for World peace.

Sorry, I really wasn't slamming you, I was attempting to be humourous :lookaroun

Clearly I wasn't clear enough either. No hard feelings?

Well, assuming now that we're thinking of countries to be added...

I'd say Spain or Australlia, but other than that, I don't see many other possibilities, considering that the country in question would have to be one the it is unlikely the US would go to war with, would be substantially different than any of the other countries already represented, and with a financially stable economy (assuming the new country would be sponsored by it's namesake, as the current agreements are.).

As much as Spain would be nice, WS is already too Western European weighted (UK, France, Germany, Italy, Norway).

A country like Russia or Greece would add something from Eastern Europe. Egypt would be good as would India, Thailand, Argentina or Brazil to balance out the countries.

Chile, Peru or Brazil
Russia or Ukraine
Korea
Australia
Thailand
India

Any of those, or all of those, would make great additions to World Showcase.

But America, as the host country, should not be removed. Unless of course Al Queda takes over the operation of Epcot.

i think they should take out the american pavillion and put in Egypt or some country from northern africa....other than morocco there isnt any from norther africa and i think that culture is very interesting and more exciting than america anyway
That would involve taking out The great American Journey and it's such an awesome show. And if they did, you know some idiot would claim Disney is "unpatriotic" or "unamerican" or whatnot.

on a side note, I think they should add Greece. I mean, where else can we see Hercules? XD

I think Greece would be a great (and realistic) addition to World Showcase. Mythology (none of Disney's Hercules, if I were in charge), origin of the Olympics in Athens, food, it would work out very well in my opinion.

South Africa needs to be represented strongly somewhere in Disney. It has a huge blend of cultures, diverse geography, incredible game reserves, and astounding cities, like Cape Town. The vineyards in South Africa produce great wines (some of which are available in AKL), and the seafood there (anyone heard of kingklip?) is delicious. I doubt it's gonna happen, unless I took over...

As you can probably tell, a lot of my family is from South Africa. On my most recent trip, July-September, I was there for six weeks. I loved it so much! :sohappy:

Heading for the great escape.
The same old song I know but...........

Scotland! because without this little wind swept damp place and its people the US and the world would be a poorer place. And we dont even get a day of recognition, perhaps were too concervative.

The food joint would be a blast, oat meal and sheeps offal, deep fried pizza and mars bars, Irn Bru whiskey. The pavillion could be sponsored by the manufacturers of intesive corinary care equipment.

I like the idea of Egypt. They could have a Sphinx or Pyramid replica. Their restaurant could have a King Tut theme. Australia would be neat as well. They could have a replica of the Sydney Opera House where concerts could be held. Also, they could have a restaurant with traditional Aborigine fare. They could serve alligator and call it croc.! Tastes like chicken/fish, Yummy!

5 weeks 3 days until ºoºrlando bound:sohappy:

Uh, Scotland already has a pavillion in Epcot: the United Kingdom! :animwink:

Also, to comment on a post made way back...

FYI, Antarctica is a continent but not a country. However, seven countries claim ownership of Antarctica. :)

End of geography lesson.

Some suggestions for additions to WS:

How about a North Korean pavillion and South Korean pavillion built side by side? They could have a DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) separating the two. :D

How about an Iranian pavillion? It could feature a nuclear energy (ie, uranium enrichment) facility? :D

Seriously though, I'm for:
  • Greece
  • Poland
  • Russia
  • Ireland
  • India
  • Australia or New Zealand
  • Spain
  • Israel
  • Any South American country other than Brazil (they are well represented by the tour groups :D )

Egypt, though.... well, too much concentration on the ancient Egypt in those suggestions. Modern Egypt is a LOT different than anything you'll see in the movies. I'm sure most Americans know a lot more about ancient Egyptian history than a lot of Egyptians...

These pavilions are set up to promote tourism to the countries, at least just to spark some interest if nothing else. If we show them pyramids and the sphynx, people will be rather disapointed when they see that a good place to view the Sphynx and Pyramids is from the Pizza Hut next door. Not saying we should have a Pizza Hut in there, but think it should give a bit more realistic view so that people won't go there expecting a lot of dessert with these ancient ruins in the middle of nowhere.

However, doubt it would ever come to be since that theme park that's being planned for nearby is to have an Egypt section.

Another problem... what will they have to offer in food that's not present in Morroco? The food is VERY similar to other mediteranean/middle eastern foods. That's why it's so easy for many Jordanians, Egyptians, Lebonese, etc. to pass themselves off as Greek and open up a Greek restraunt.

Same thing with the India ideas -- India is already pretty well represented in AK, so it's not needed in Epcot.

Australia -- think this would be a better possibility for an AK expansion.

Scotland -- already a little present as part of the UK.

:veryconfu Could you expound on this a bit more? Are you saying Disney is planning another theme park or someone else and if so, whom?

leave it alone

American Adventure is an awesome show, regardless of where you are from, the animatronics on this are amazing. Egypt!, Morocco is there already. Russia is a good idea, the problem is there are so many countries with great potential, i doubt they will ever do anything.
