Counter Service Breakfast/Lunch

Are there any good counter service breakfasts? We already haveo ur DDP table service meals tentatively planned and they are all going to be for supper (or possibly one lunch), but I wondered if there are any counter service places that have a good breakfast. I don't want to eat burgers and fries for every counter service meal and I thought maybe if we have a breakfast and a table service supper, we can get by with using the snack allotment in between...at least some of the days.

And what about lunch? What would you suggest if we are looking for something a little healthier than greasy pizza or burgers and fries?

We are staying at POR. Any good choices at the counter service place there?

I know EPCOT has a CS for breakfast. I think, maybe called Electric Umbrella. Pinochio Village Haus has some awesome sandwiches and Columbia Harbor House has excellent fish & Fries. I would go to allears.net. They have a section specifically titled dining plan restaurants. From there you can access the individual menus. MGM has the ABC Commissary for all 3. Animal Kingdom has Tusker House also for all 3. Magic Kingdom seems to be the one lacking, but they do have the Main Street Bakery. :slurp: Oh, seems like I read where there is a place in Norway that has tasty pastries.(that was almost a typo):o

Hope this helps....

To avoid burgers at counter service places, for the most part you have to avoid Magic Kingdom and The Studios - though since I was last there, I believe the Backlot Caterers at the Studios has de-burgerfied their menu.

Nicer counter service can be found in Animal Kingdom at Flame Tree BBQ or Tusker House. At Epcot you can eat non-burger/pizza items at The Land or a number of World Showcase pavilions - Mexico, Norway, China, Japan and Morrocco spring to mind.

I hate to say it, but one of my secret favorites is the moist and chewy french toast at the values. It is so SINNAMINOLISHOUS. I also use my hands and dip it into the Syrup cups. Don't tell anybody though, it's our secret. I also eat the sausage dipped in the syrup too. It's an all hands meal. I'm such a pig.

For a great "Character-free" breakfast, (and in my opinion, the best DEAL on WDW property!), head over to Fort Wilderness and enjoy the breakfast buffet at the TRAILS END Buffeteria! :slurp:

Not sure how that figures into your dining plan schedule, but the price is so good, it would be worth paying for out of pocket and using your saved dining plan meals toward something else!

The atmosphere, service, and selection are a great way to start any morning! We make sure to do it once or twice each trip!

ENJOY!

Not actually answering your original question, but I just noticed that you're staying at POR. Definitely plan to have at least one breakfast in their restaurant (Boatwright's). I highly recommend the banana-stuffed French Toast and my DH loves the sweet potato pancakes.:slurp:

The Electric Umbrella at Epcot is counterservice and has really good breakfast sandwiches. Ham, egg & cheese on a bagel is my personal favorite. We always eat there at least twice a trip.

For lunch, any one of the counterservice stops at World Showcase would give you a great non-burger selection. I don't remember the name but the one in China is very good. Also, the fish and chips stand in the UK was quite yummy (but a bit on the greasy side if you're trying to abstain).

Sorry if I'm too Epcot focused here but it is one our our favorite parks for dining.

Tusker House at AK has counter service breakfast that is a step above fast food. I hear their lunch/dinner menu is also very good for counter service, and not a single burger in sight.

Can't say I enjoyed Flame Tree BBQ, but I'm definitely in the minority on this one as it is quite popular, also not a burger in sight.

You can get counter service snacks or lunches from every single World Showcase pavilion. The most popular seem to be the UK and Mexico for fish & chips and tacos/burritos respectively. The only burgers are at the U.S. Pavilion.

At Future World, Sunshine Season used to have the most variety of any counter service in all the parks, and the food is pretty good. I think since the Soarin' refurbishments, it seems like the selections have been reduced, but again, no burgers in sight.

Breakfast at the resort food court gets old after a few days. If you're at POR, for a little variety you might walk down to POFQ's food court one morning for the beignets. You'll also find its food court less hectic and noisy. And the two resorts share the same refillable mugs.

You also asked about healthier food at counter service under the dining plan. Sometimes you can do this by creatively combining healthy "snack" items: e.g. at breakfast a bagel, bowl of fruit and bottle of orange juice can be a counter service meal. Just tell the cashier to charge it that way to your dining plan account, and not as 3 snacks.

Breakfast at POR foodcourt is not bad. Also on Main Street you can go to the bakery, Epcot also has a bakery in future world, not sure of the other 2 parks.

For lunch at MK if you want counter service, Columbia Harbor House is a good bet, at AK, the Tuskar House, at Epcot we never eat counter so don't know, and same for MGM.

Or, do what we did. Take a bowl and spoon for each family member, a couple of boxes of cereal, go down to the store/eatery in your resort, buy a quart of milk and have breakfast in your room. We iced the milk down in our ice bucket and with the milk left over, the kids made chocolate milk before hitting the parks. Total cost? $3 for the milk each morning, compared to $20 each morning if we were to do CS breakfasts.

As far as counter service breakfasts goes, I've yet to find something that knocks my socks off, but it could be mainly because I prefer egg whites to whole eggs, so any of the breakfast sandwiches, while tasty, usually sit too heavy in my gut. Besides, if we're not having a sit-down breakfast somewhere, we usually just eat in the food court of the resort where we're staying. If we try to get counter service breakfast in a resort, we're usually too excited to hit rides to eat. :D

To that end, I'm more than cool with the food courts at Animal Kingdom Lodge, PO-R OR FQ, and Saratoga Springs.

For lunch, Tusker House in AK has a rotisserie chicken platter with veggies and mashed potatoes that knocks my socks off.
