NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Children's Place Retail Stores Inc. Thursday posted a preliminary quarterly net loss that nearly doubled, hurt by fees related to a stock option probe and said its license agreement with Walt Disney Co. could be jeopardized by several missed deadlines.
The deadlines pertain to remodeling and maintenance of the Disney Store chain that Children's Place operates and were set forth in a June agreement with Disney. The missed deadlines entitle Disney to actions including possible termination of the license agreement.

Children's Place (down $5.95 to $27.07, Charts) shares plummeted in midday trading on Nasdaq.
The retailer also said it will likely miss future deadlines and has discussed with Disney the possibility of delaying the due dates of certain of its remodeling obligations until later this year and into the next two years.

Disney and Children's Place have also been discussing changes that would allow Disney to relocate its flagship store in Manhattan.

Interesting. Wonder where they would move it to. They've got a pretty prime location where it is.

I completely agree with you. I live in NYC now, so that is the best. But - if I'm correct, Children's Place doesn't own the 5th Ave Store (hence it being so much better than the ones in other cities)...so not sure what the two would have to do with each other.

right...the World of Disney on 5th Ave. is actually run by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, so I don't really know how that plays in at all. The only reason I could see them wanting to move it would be to make it bigger, since every time I go, it's packed with wall-to-wall people...profits couldn't get any higher! I love that I can buy WDW and DL stuff when I go there. Screw the Disney Store, I can buy a Time Rover in the World of Disney! Am I the only one who absolutely LOVES the third floor? My fave...

I wonder why they want to more the NYC, I agree it's in a prime location just a few blocks from FAO.

I can understand why CP is losing money. They took the disney stores as is and did very little to change the model that was existing. This is a problem since the existing model was not working and it doesn't take a brain surgeon to have figured this one out. The merchandise needs to be revamped, the toys shouldn't be the same as the ones that you can buy in Toys r Us for less money, they need more adult merchandise not just men's t-shirts and jean jackets and the quality needs to be increase because as of now the stuff they sell is not much more than what you can buy at Walmart. However, most importantly each store should stock more of the merchandise that they tend to sell and if one store runs out of something they should be able to get it easily from another store that is close by quickly that may not be selling that item. I can recall talking to a manager years ago at the Menlo Park NJ store and she said that for some reason they sell a ton of plush there, but the Woodbridge store which is like 2 miles away didn't, but both stores would get the same amount of plush and Menlo always ran out and Woodbridge was stuck with a ton of it and there was no easy way for them to get the stock transferred from Woodbridge to them. Woodbridge would have to box it up and send it back to the warehouse and the warehouse would have to send it to Menlo, instead there should be a regional manager that could transfer the stuff in their car and filling out some paperwork.

Totally love that store too. I also know that the store in times square is very small, so maybe they want to move the flagship down there someplace and make it even bigger where there are many more tourists. I'd be really upset if they did that.

The only possible better location could be Times Square, I suppose. Hope they don't because then I couldn't pop over there on my lunch hour on days when I need SANITY!!  :o

I believe part of the deal was that Disney could only have the three World of Disney stores they had when the deal was struck. It was agreed upon that Disney would not open a new store front that would be in direct competition with the stores Children's Place purchased.

Possibly the move of the Fifth Ave store could be looked at as a new store in competition depending on the perspective.

I don't know why they would move from Fifth though. How much better can you get. Unless it is doing so well financially also? I never understood the rationale of selling the same merchandise that is sold in WDW and DL in NYC. Sure they have some unique NYC items, but the store was so much better before all the generic park merchandise moved in.

They can't move the NYC store. A store that regal only fits on fifth ave. It would suffer in another city. I think that would be a horrible idea.

I've never been to the store in NYC. I'll have to check it out next time I'm there!! What about the store on N. Michigan in Chicago? Is this one owned by Disney or Children's Place? I'm asking b/c they have so much more there than the Disney Stores in Atlanta.

Ah, the gallery on the 3rd floor. I could redecorate my home!
I miss the original DS. I am a former CM of the Menlo Park, NJ store before the CP took it over. It's not the same at all. It is missing the disney magic. It's like any other mall store except has Disney themed stuff. Remember the original "purple" stores with the dark ceiling, studio lighting and Disney figures aroud the top of the displays? Now that WAS Disney!
I want my REAL Disney Store back!!!!!!

Disney should take it back over. Now it is just a $.99 cent store with the Disney name. No quality merchandise. No art. No collectibles. Mostly junk.

No, they did not replace the CM's when TCP took over. I've been a CM before the switch and I'm still a CM after the switch.

It's interesting to see this story since my store had one of it's best years in a long time. I work tomorrow night so I'll have to see what's going on...

I highly doubt it would leave NYC. Just a move elsewhere in Manhattan. Perhaps they think they are in competition with F.A.O. Schwartz, in which case they could move to Times Square (if they can find space). But there, they would compete with the massive Toys R Us, and I'm not sure which is bigger competition. That said, World of Disney is always mobbed...not sure how many people are buying stuff, though. I love just looking around in there. Took the girlfriend there last weekend...very magical :-)

I start a tread on HSM3 the other day and you post how it does not pertain to WDW when other people as will as myself did see how effects future attractions at WDW. Now you see nothing wrong with a post about the Childrens Place Management of the Disney Store ? Please tell everyone how You view that pertains to WDW activities current or future ? We are all looking foward to your explanation as to why this is ok and how that was not .

The letters RR are important to them looking into moving the store.

Because it mentioned the World of Disney store in NYC, which is run by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.
