It's about ELIMINATING cases thereby preventing others from catching the disease. What part of this doesn't make sense to you "intellectually"? At least intellectuals can capitalize their damn sentences.

Someone last night told me the virus would soon be gone...but he’s said that before and was wrongI'm just very curious as to what a certain group of people will do when the virus is still thriving after Nov 4.
There was a lot of back and forth from the experts in the beginning about masks and that is what caused the problem and still causes the problem. What is needed is the facts from experts that everyone can hear and then make decisions on. We get a lot of opinion from the media instead of facts. You can't expect people to make good decisions with bad data. From what I've seen, it wasn't until mandates were put in place that a large majority started wearing masks in many places. I have philosophical problems with imposing these kinds of mandates, but I understand why they're in place.
At this point everyone should really know what needs to be done. But it seems like there are still a large number who either don't understand or just don't care.
Well that’ll certainly have people falling over themselves trying to get in!Just for reference here’s a clip of the ad I’m referring to. There’s IMHO an obvious attempt to highlight masks.

If only it were that easy. Look at the uproar over the cloth that covers you mouth and nose. I really don't see the problem with limiting capacity at businesses and wearing a mask.Well I live in NJ and for months we couldn't go to the gym. We only just got that sometime in July. And we only just got indoor dining. So there have been a lot of restrictions on businesses that were longer than needed. I fully agree that in the beginning we needed to shut things down and get to the bottom of things but once we knew more it shouldn't have been mandated for businesses to stay closed. Give people the information on how to stay safe and then the customer will drive businesses to implement safety protocols. That is my point.
The funny thing is that when I read this I think that this is how we should handle the pandemic in the US and probably would have 30-40 years ago. No one needs mandatory quarantines or masking as the large majority would do this already. You are never going to get 100% of people to all do the same thing even when there are laws. So treat people with dignity and respect and give them the truth and the vast majority will do the right thing. I know most will disagree with me but this is how it should have been handled here. Not allowing some dictator governors to hold people hostage when they could implement safe procedures and still go out and function in society.
Is that you Donald? How is this just about New York?? I don't think anyone said it was. This is about the media as a whole moving the goal posts for the ENTIRE country.![]()
Again if only decisions were made by what science was saying. Its working here were I live. Everything that has been put in place has been according to what the chief medical officer has been saying. There was a lot of back and forth from the experts in the beginning about masks and that is what caused the problem and still causes the problem. Along with what you said, another model study was released showing how we can save more lives if some things changed a little. Scary numbers but we all know what we need to do.Was it really a lot of back and forth, though? In the beginning, they said not to wear masks so that they were available for health care workers. Then they recommended wearing masks in public because they are effective at reducing the spread of the virus and masks had become more readily available - especially as companies started producing reusable cloth masks. But even when they said not to go out and buy medical masks or N95 masks, it was still suggested to use some sort of homemade face covering. I remember going out to pick up dinner from local restaurants in April with a winter scarf wrapped around my face when they brought the food out to my car. It's not like they said "don't wear a mask" in March, then said "wear a mask" in April, then changed their minds again and said "no masks" in May, and then said "you really should wear a mask" in July. The recommendation changed from "don't buy masks" to "wear a mask" and hasn't changed since then.
COVID-19 is the third leading cause of death in the US. It kills more people than all of the things you listed except cancer, a group of diseases with various causes. This thread focuses on death by COVID. Let’s all remember folks die every minute of everyday from many things; household accidents, drug mis use or overdose, car wrecks, getting randomly shot, cancer, and here’s a big one, medical malpractice, just to name a few..
All that tells you about is a specific moment. It says nothing about before or after the test. The concern by those researchers was that people were being tested too late, that they were contagious and did not properly mitigate. There was a New York Times story which I will dig up when I have time that found that up to 90% of the people who test positive on a PCR test don't have enough virus in their system to be contagious.
There is a lot of uncertainty about whether asymptomatic people are actually contagious in large numbers vs. pre-symptomatic people.
I think we're well past the point of not having good information. I see plenty of facts from experts. Whether it's the effectiveness of masks, likelihood of surface transmission, or the relative risk for kids, we've learned a lot since this began. There is certainly disagreement on how best to respond to what we've learned, but I'm not seeing the prevalence of bad data. There was a lot of back and forth from the experts in the beginning about masks and that is what caused the problem and still causes the problem. What is needed is the facts from experts that everyone can hear and then make decisions on. We get a lot of opinion from the media instead of facts. I don't have a problem with limiting capacity and while I don't love masks that would be fine to. I have a problem with governors who wouldn't let stores, restaurants or gyms open at all. We knew that there would be restrictions and people were fine with them but keeping things closed when restrictions could be implemented I have issue with.If only it were that easy. Look at the uproar over the cloth that covers you mouth and nose. I really don't see the problem with limiting capacity at businesses and wearing a mask.
Right and in the beginning the science said masks don't work. Then they changed their mind without adequate data explaining why so you had a lot of push back when it didn't seem to make sense. So if they came out in the beginning and said we don't know if they work so wear one or not and we will get back to you and then followed up with yes, it seems they work then people would have understood. So again my statement stands that if the media would present the facts (what is known and what isn't) so that people could make informed decisions I think you would see a majority of people do the right thing.Again if only decisions were made by what science was saying. Its working here were I live. Everything that has been put in place has been according to what the chief medical officer has been saying.
The first message was masks don't work and please don't go buy them since the healthcare workers needed them. Then came well just any old mask is good (hell a t-shirt over your nose & mouth is fine) and may help. Then masks are the best thing since sliced bread. Then well some masks work and some are worse than wearing nothing. So the information was all over the map in the first few months. So it has been wishy washy. Was it really a lot of back and forth, though? In the beginning, they said not to wear masks so that they were available for health care workers. they admitted to lying to us and they knew masks worked the whole time.Right and in the beginning the science said masks don't work. Then they changed their mind without adequate data explaining why so you had a lot of push back when it didn't seem to make sense. This wishy washy back and forth on the science and then introducing politics and the biased media didn't help anything. It just led to more confusion and fear than was necessary.
Its cause science is always changing as well as how much is known about the virus. I don't buy that if they just informed everyone about what is true and what isn't people would voluntarily follow the rules. Look at just this thread and the amount of people going against anything that's implemented. Look at when it's mentioned how where I live they fine people for having large gatherings right now. So many of you are angered by that. The first message was masks don't work and please don't go buy them since the healthcare workers needed them. Then came well just any old mask is good (hell a t-shirt over your nose & mouth is fine) and may help. Then masks are the best thing since sliced bread. So is it the scientists that are to blame here or the media? And if the media is so biased, then how is it that the scientists were able to present their initial position on masks and their revised recommendations? Wouldn't a biased media have pushed one position over the other? Or is the bias just toward reporting the scientists recommendations? Because that's not really bias. It's presenting new information as its understood. And as you state very clearly, we've been given that information. The first message was masks don't work and please don't go buy them since the healthcare workers needed them. Then came well just any old mask is good (hell a t-shirt over your nose & mouth is fine) and may help. Then masks are the best thing since sliced bread. they admitted to lying to us and they knew masks worked the whole time.
Also, they were telling us this against the backdrop of millions of people in other countries wearing masks.Right - and I think it was clear to anyone who thought about it for even 2 seconds that they believed masks work or else they wouldn't have told us that the healthcare workers needed them.
