I was already uneasy seeing those crowds on the day itself; now I find the scene totally shocking. Disney should have come up with a more responsible way of shutting down.
What would you have done? It’s a lot of people to have exit the resort on a timeline. There weren’t reports of cast members being sick so I suppose they thought they had time yet. Universal and Sea World I’m sure shut down the sane way. Such a large complex to run. I don’t envy them their choices moving ahead.

From an East Coaster perspective, anything in between the Appalachian/Alleghenys and the Rockies is The Midwest. Unless you speak with a drawl, then you're in The South.

"The West" is an era that's long past.

(cf. New Yorker Magazine covers)

I’ve had this discussion before but here are the areas of the lower 48, note that there are some states that are their own thing and I’ll star states that people have a hard time placing and put them in two categories:

New England: ME, NH, VT, RI, CT, MA

Mid Atlantic: NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD*

The South: VA, WV, TN, KY, NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, LA, AR, MD*

Florida: It’s own thang

Midwest: OH, MI, IN, IL, WI, MN, IA*

Great Plains: ND, SD, NE, KS, OK, IA*

Missouri: It’s own thing, part Midwest, South, and Plains

Texas: Again, it’s own thing, Texans would have it no other way

Mountain West: MT, CO, ID, WY, UT*

Southwest: NM, AZ, NV, UT*

Pacific Northwest: WA, OR

California: It’s own thing

And let me be clear- I’m not saying let this thing kill all the old people. I don’t know the solution. What I do know is that what we’ve done is going to permanently affect families in this country. Either way you look at it.
I hope your family comes out ok and is able to at least get some relief with the package passed. My hubs is base+commission with a very large part commission, and primarily works with schools (fundraising) - so his spring is now shot. He estimates we lost ~20% pay if schools don’t resume. We are out until at least April 24; been out since 3/13 when spring break started. All families definitely impacted, but now so are the schools. I work LTC (nutrition consultant) and if this goes no contact for months, well I hope people are prepared for rebellious behavior on part of families and possible increased deaths for the residents, the staff can’t even provide the “human touch” they are used to providing. No communal dining and need to stay in their rooms. Many will give up after awhile. Screen time for them is just not a substitute. Even the son who comes daily to see his mom through the window- fine for now but months? I’ve been lucky enough I can do most of my job from home currently. Although one of my coworkers likes to take naps on my lap and he’s got gas lol (we adopted a puppy in December)
Another thing that will have significant impact is charities. Our local sertoma clubs raise over 1/4 million annually for Boys&Girls clubs locally - the underserved are about to be hit even harder if we can’t have our fundraisers (Wingapalooza, Chili Cookoff, Bingo)
On the upside we’ve cases and cases of chocolate stocked now lol!

from a Midwesterners perspective in MO we consider ourself Midwest too aka “flyover country”. MN, WI is “north” and they say pop. It’s soda here in MO. ETA pop maybe in KC but St Louis and elsewhere it’s mostly soda
I hope this is the breakthrough.
Sounds like good news! It is interesting on the zinc- There’s been controversy for years on whether high dose zinc works to stop or lessen cold symptoms. Problem with high dose zinc is GI upset. And definitely not for long term use

Again, you don’t know that. Our stay at hone orders are until April 9. Realistically I think it will be extended by another week or two. Mid May is not out of the realm of possibility. Unless you know something the rest of us don’t?

Again, the virus makes the timeline - not Disney or the government. Florida is not going to hit its PEAK of infections for a few weeks. Stay at home orders will be in effect for at least another 6 weeks, at least.

This will be common knowledge shortly that Disney is paying their Paris cast members through April 19. They will then be required to go on their version of unemployment until the park reopens. It’s a different country with different labor laws obviously. I’m hoping this doesn’t happen here as this was not part of the agreement in the US. If they plan on opening by June 1 it would be a logistical nightmare trying to rehire 70,000 plus people back.
France has strict labor laws. No more than 10 hours per day work, no more than 48 hours per week worked. French people work to live, not live to work like us in the USA.

I guess I don’t have the inside scoop like you do. My apologies.

This is an old post and we were told not to keep those going.

He'll eventually make it to @The Mom 's post and hopefully delete these, or she'll do it for him if you report the post. ;)

PSA to all: Read the full thread before responding. You can use the multi-quote feature, or, open up a post you want to respond to in a new tab (use the numbered hyperlink in the upper right of a post to do so). Then, when finished reading the whole thread, respond to just the ones that still need addressing and comport with moderator instructions.

Me, too. I have relatives that are cast members. Trying to stay positive. I would have thought if Disney was going to do that it would have been in the agreement too
At least Disney is being upfront with the Paris cast members. No one there should be surprised.

I think both Virginia and NC are starting to fall out of the Southern classification for various reasons. I know a lot of people in the deep south don't consider either state southern anymore (although certain parts of them definitely are, but that's also true of Florida).

In some parts of Florida - you have to drive North to get South.
