Someone to consider. A 25% positivity rate for omicron is nowhere near as bad as a 25% rate for delta. Also, with all the self testing going on, who knows what the actual number is. Seems rather useless today.
This is a good point about the self testing. I am wondering if that is being taken into account by these governors.

At this point the positivity rate is useless.

I think that's the niche there going for. In theory, it also might offer better coverage across variants, but we'll need to see what the trial data showed.
My daughter, who participated in the Novovax trial, says it’s the best vaccine EVER. She’s away at college, which frankly is Covid-central. And after all of her roommates came down with Covid, yet she remained unscathed, she boasts “Novovax for the WIN!!!”

We have no way to report negatives here for home tests that are self proctored. Never really liked positivity rates though I do get the point

Woo hoo! It will be nice to have another option!

Interestingly I was sent info about a nasal or pill from the research place that's viewed as a preventative. I will share it with local friends but the weird part is it is an overnight stay.

I see NO chance at all Universal waiting for Orange County to go into the "moderate or low" level. And, I am going to go out on a limb here and say DISNEY also WILL NOT wait this time around.
I wish I could agree with you but we have no idea what they’ll do, when or IF they’ll do anything nor what metrics they use to guide decisions. It’s a complete shot in the dark. I’d be STUNNED if they did anything prior to summer

i would be STUNNED if Disney still has masks by April 1. I would go as far as maybe middle of April.

But summer time? No way

Now, unless another strain comes out. That is the wildcard. Then all bets are off.

In fairness, however, we know that deaths are a lagging indicator. Given the fact that cases throughout the United States are plummeting, it is pretty much a foregone conclusion that deaths will also be plummeting within a couple of weeks. Waiting for that to start showing up on the graphs wouldn't really change the situation.

I’ve seen this story play out too many times the past several months. We do not know when or if they’ll change anything.

if we did know I could plan a trip….

This is totally based on my own feelings/instincts and nothing else. So fair warning.

I agree with you about Disney. I think masks are gone within a matter of weeks, if not sooner. IMHO, the biggest driver of keeping them was that they wanted the same policy at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland. Now that the mask mandate is lifting in California, I think they'll move to drop them on both coasts.

I feel like we are at the point where another variant/strain is not going to change anything. I think the masks are coming off and they're going to stay off. I think the calculus is that people are now comfortable with the risk level, given the access to the vaccines and therapeutics, and don't want to see restrictions be re-imposed.

I could be wrong. It's happened once or twice in my life. ;) But that's my gut feeling.

We don't know for certain. However, I think there is 99% certainty that Disney is not going to keep masks when basically every state and every other vacation destination drops them. I mean, when we're at the point where Las Vegas is dropping them in casinos, I think we've reached the endgame on masking.

Yes this was huge today.

If a place like Vegas dropped them its now wide open for everywhere.

I'm going to add this data point. While I have been very lucky to go during lower spread times to WDW, both trips had masks indoors. My June trip last year removed indoor masks like 3 days after I left.

My trips this year are mid March, early June and Oct 1st. Plan accordingly ;)

Honest question. For those who are anti mask, anti vaccine mandate, but not pro-COVID.

What’s the solution to reduce yearly deaths from 400,000 to something like 100,000?

With hopefully a similar reduction in other COVID complications.

I saw a tweet today that said vaccination doesn’t work, followed by “The more you vaccinate the more people get infected. Simple math really.” It’s shaken my faith that anything is possible and we’re at the lowest impact that’s possible in the US.

If that nasal spray works out, we may actually have the tool to really end this thing for good...

...if people actually take it. I must say, the past two years have really shaken my faith in humanity's reasoning ability.

I think we are headed in the direction of reducing deaths significantly as it is for a few reasons: (1) we continue to have a very slow, but steady, increase in people who are getting vaccinated; (2) because of the high contagiousness of omicron, a much, much higher percentage of people have now gotten Covid and therefore have at least some natural immunity, even if they are not vaccinated; and (3) we have made steady progress on having good therapeutics to help those who do get infected avoid serious complications.

One other thing I think could be a serious help would be for the FDA to approve the Covaxin vaccine. That is a more traditional "inactivated virus" vaccine similar to the flu vaccine. I think having that option available could help overcome some vaccine hesitancy from those who are not necessarily anti-vax but are leery of mRNA technology. Johnson & Johnson originally was that "alternative" option, but I think the early issues with blood clotting and the subsequent pause kind of ruined its reputation in the public's mind.

So, yes, I am for taking the masks off and I am against vaccine mandates. But I also am not a believer that we are just going to have to live with the levels of hospitalizations and deaths we have now. I think there is progress already being made and I think approving Covaxin could be another potent weapon in the fight.

Hey, you asked. :)

It does sound like a great thing. I don't have tons of info. Just these blurbs

You can help us develop better medicine. We are evaluating an investigational drug given through the nose or mouth as a potential new COVID-19 preventative and treatment option. No jabs required!
  • Intranasal and Intraoral COVID-19 Preventive and Treatment Research Study

Are you interested in being contacted about an overnight COVID-19 preventative and treatment study where the investigational drug is given by nose or mouth? If so, please fill out the form below and one of our patient recruiters will contact you with more information.
I'm not sure I could do it anyway with me still being in the current trial. The overnight part gives me pause too. Though I could handle that with my spouse WFH most of the time. Looking at only 18-55 year olds who have never had covid.

Still anything to help sounds great to me! But like you I am still dumbfounded by what happened here. The nasty things people said to me joining the trial are not forgotten. Nor their reactions to me and those who blocked me from their lives because of it.
