On the contrary, they are essential and we need people in these roles who won’t get sick, spread disease, and knock out entire facilities for 2 weeks.
I guess we were just extremely lucky these same people, unvaccinated, at the beginning and during the height of the pandemic, surrounded by sick and unvaccinated people, that these essential folks were able stay healthy, to do their jobs and do their jobs well.

I wonder what changed?

The ones making all the noise. It is a small fraction of the population but they are what we see.
"Only a few a dozen NYPD members were placed on unpaid leave Monday after refusing to get the COVID-19 vaccine — but thousands of unvaccinated employees remain on the job with pending exemption requests, the city’s top cop said."

Good news is this group of thousands continues to work. But we will see what happens when most of their exemption requests are rejected.

They weren’t. They got sick and many died. Many of these loudmouths have former colleagues who sat in freezers for months.

Well, the alternative prior to the vaccine would have been to have no police, firefighters, EMS, etc. until there was a vaccine. Now that there's a vaccine, the rules need to change. Part of being a public servant is doing what is in the best interests of the public at large.

Also, it's misleading to say that they were able to stay healthy and do their jobs. Plenty of them got sick. Some survives and some didn't. I live in a suburb, but have a neighbor who is a firefighter in a densely-populated part of north Jersey. He got COVID-19 and spread it to his wife and most of her family before he had any symptoms. Luckily, they all survived, but it's not like it was unheard of for first responders to catch the virus.

We can be thankful that the vast majority who get covid do survive, many with little or no symptoms. In the case of your neighbor, he and his family now have natural immunity, so that's good.

It's too bad folks that had COVID, survived and now have natural immunity, are still forced to get the vaccine or lose their jobs...

I don't know the stats, but I am sure the vast majority of NYC essential workers, who worked throughout the pandemic, did not die of COVID. Someone please fact check me.

Someday, there will be a point where COVID and its variants will technically not be pandemic and they can drop that label.
COVID and its variants will be here forever, much like this thread.
Soon I don't need mask to riding the train soon after this pandemic is over next year.

The overall number of NYPD deaths from Covid-19 is currently at 61. The force is 36,000 sworn officers. That is .0017 percent. The population of NYC is approx 8.8 million. There have been 56,000 covid-19 deaths in NYC. That is .0064 percent. So overall NYPD has faired better than the general population.

Thanks for the fact check. This makes sense to me.
What does not make sense to me is NYPD being forced to vaccinate or lose their jobs.

It’s what many businesses are doing or have done as well. I’m not against these types of mandates at a local level. But I feel maybe the implementation could have been handled better. 🤷‍♂️

I understand many businesses are mandating the vaccine that's fine. But for these essential NYC workers, to me its different and I agree, should have been handled better.

I would have thought their unions would have been stronger.
