4% is notable but low compared to others. Hillsborough (Tampa area) showed closer to 10% opt out earlier today — edited to correct: about 16,500 opted out in Hillsborough for a total of about 7% to 9% according to local news. Neighboring Pinellas County (St. Pete area) has no opt out clause or mandates of any kind. Just listened to a back to school phone message from the superintendent of schools and COVID was not even mentioned at all. Like it didn’t even exist. At our middle schooler’s school, there was about 75-80 percent mask wearing at their back to school open house today, with some classrooms having desks grouped together with students sitting face to face. FWIW.

I’m vacinated and I think it’s a crazy gamble for me to travel for work right now. I just don’t get the thinking of everybody.
I was of the opinion that the vaccinated needed to get on with Normal interactions…

…but I was foolish enough to believe everyone would follow in time. Huge chunks won’t to try to “own the smart” now…
Problem is they’ve never won that fight…nor will.
So they dig in.

The variants have me rethinking the whole idea of “normalcy” right now

The Chinese covid vaccines are not working well against delta, and many countries that had no other choice are suffering the consequences.

The MRNA vaccines do much better against delta and North America and UK / Europe are fortunate to have created them and made use of them. US has an abundance of doses not used due to those not wanting to be vaccinated. So much so that the USA was able to give Indonesia 8 million doses which are being administered to healthcare workers in that country.

I just don’t know how many times we have to screw up before people will stop getting their heads out of their a$$es and do what’s best?

tall order in ‘Merica…I know…

Delta is causing wide spread chaos…but the problem is that may not be the “bad variant”…the next could set the counter back to zero if it breaks through vaccines and causes even mild clinical care…

how long before we not have to live the mistake?
If you have had the vaccine you should be protected so why are you concerned about other people and what they are doing.
You do you and I will do me.
I have had the vaccine so I don't give a d---- what others are doing.

This virus will never go away it is just like the seasonal cold and flu. The answer ultimately lies in herd immunity and accepting the fact people will get this virus.

We must work on devloping theraputics and treatments that keep people from the most adverse effects.

In case you haven't figured out there are some that will never let this so called crisis go away and if it does then global warming will be the next scare tactic. You are already worried about the next variant that may be worse so yes you are part of the problem.

The flu doesn’t kill 600,000 Americans every year.

So do I, forward thinker…hell I almost was a guinea pig…very early.

you’re missing the point…

mutation could occur in the unvaccinated and come back around. Not a “movement”…an “evolution”, baby?

get everyone vaccinated. And if you are…hold someone else down. Enough talk…arms out.

therapeutics are fine…

but develop that under traditional - if heightened - research conditions. Not in emergent waiting for mass production.

Latest data for vaccinations among 12-17 year olds in the Tampa Bay area. Not sure how Orange County/Orlando area compares.

As much as I want to gloat, this isn't a good thing. With all the countries dependent on Sinovac for lack of a better option, this will bring more suffering and possibly lead to more variants.

Plus... China invested a lot of political capital into this venture. Xi Jinping isn't one to take such a defeat gracefully. Expect more malfeasance.

I haven’t understood why all production of non mRNA hasn’t stopped…and Everything hasn’t gone hard this way?

sure seems like the future is now…use it

From the CDC archives, make of it what you want.
"The 1918 influenza pandemic was the most severe pandemic in recent history. It was caused by an H1N1 virus with genes of avian origin. Although there is not universal consensus regarding where the virus originated, it spread worldwide during 1918-1919. In the United States, it was first identified in military personnel in spring 1918.

It is estimated that about 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with this virus. The number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 occurring in the United States. Mortality was high in people younger than 5 years old, 20-40 years old, and 65 years and older. The high mortality in healthy people, including those in the 20-40 year age group, was a unique feature of this pandemic."
