Ivory Tower Squabble EST 2011. WINDMILL SURVIVOR
Livee in IL as well. Wife’s work closed at end of business today. I work for an essential service and report to work M-F. We have probably 1/3 of our employees working remotely. Every generation has its trials and memorable challenges/ sacrifices. Works Wars, the Great Depression, 9-11. This one is affecting 3 generations of my family in one way or another.

My DD works for a Fortune 100 company. They are probably one of the top 10 at minimum essential firms in the state. They have been sheltered at home for almost two weeks, they saw what was coming. The ordered all office personnel 3 new computer monitors, keyboards, head sets etc so life as we know it in Central to Northern IL should not crash. We think food etc. Many don't think what happens when the gas doesn't come on, water doesn't pump or the electric no longer works. The basics were protected long before anyone started making executive orders. Corporations got ya.

Let's also make note that many people ignore the social distancing "because I'm healthy so I won't get the virus" and many people either don't wash their hands or barely wash their hands.

:(
It's not just hands. It's airborne why the recommendation is 6ft distance. They are learning more and more about this virus and none of it is good.

I'm not going to watch the whole thing, but the first thing that bothers me is that he's only playing one side of the conversation...which means context is lacking. I also don't know if this guy's had a prior beef with the company, so there's that as well. He may be telling the truth, but there is just too much room for questioning the validity. If a major news outlet gets hold of the full recording...that will be a different story.
What are you talking about? Their policies are awful. They need to close their stores period. There is no reason why you should be putting your employees at risk. Their stores are also size of shoebox. And last most important reason they aren't essential to anything. They are a dying business. Why they are desperate to stay open.

Someone here was asking yesterday how Italy got so messed up.

I have no documented links but I saw a claim somewhere that northern Italy at some point brought in 100,000 migrants from Wuhan and Wenzhou regions of China to work in textile factories. So many people that direct flights existed. The implication is that when the panic flight from Wuhan started, enough Wuhanese managed to escape back to Italy (presumably there were in Wuhan for Chinese New Year) that ... what with general unpreparedness and incompetence in both China and the EU ... the virus became unstoppable.

Sorry if this is old news or totally wrong.

There’s absolutely no evidence for this hypothetical scenario.

Looks like you are right.

From 2013 article

No-one is disputing the business links between Italy and China, but the idea that the virus was introduced by hordes of fleeing Wuhanese workers is completely unsubstantiated.

Whew! Haven’t opened this thread since Monday and just went through all of pages 287-423 for the last hour or so!!

Anyways, thought I would share some of my experiences from the past week;

Last week was my university’s week-long spring break, in which halfway through they announced we would be moving to remote learning for the next 2 weeks and told students to stay at home, if possible, and not come back to campus as facilities and dorms will remain closed.
I however live off campus, and the conditions back at home aren’t ideal for a great quiet and peaceful place to study, watch online lectures, and take midterms online, which I had one coming up as soon spring break ended. Therefore, I elected to drive 3.5 hrs back to my apartment Sunday evening and hunker down there. I did some quick grocery shopping Sunday night; eggs were sparse but was able to grab a cage along with a chug of orange juice among other stuff. Water, ramen, soup, bananas, toilet paper, etc. were all out at the nearby Walmart and Wegmans. I was lucky enough to buy a 6-pack of TP right before break since I just ran out, so great coincidence on my end!

As the week went along, it was hard not leaving and going about the usual activities I would do as a college student. Almost all the restaurants are closed, friends are either back home and/or out of state....was just a lonely depressing feeling honestly. May dare I say boring too..?

After a day of online classes, I would just cook then binge some videos of Happily Ever After, Fantasmic!, Rise of the Resistance, MMRR, etc. Once I ran out of those, I started watching some other (Disney) stuff that was recommended....Mickey and the Wondrous Book is so good! Probably due to its connection with HEA, lol. Also, got to watch Frozen 2 again on Disney+!!

Around Wednesday, my university finally gave the announcement that the rest of the semester is online, and thus postponing commencements. I’m only third year, but I can feel for those seniors as I’m friends with many. Also on Thursday, the PA Governor announced non-life-sustaining places to close, in which our university libraries and remaining opened buildings fall under. Also quite sad as my birthday is coming up next week and since restaurants are closed....take-out it is I guess!!

After reading everything here, as well as staying up to date with the news and numbers here in the US and around the world, I already have the feeling that this will be the way of life for a long time. Not sure if I’m gonna continue to quarantine here in my apartment or just go back home, but gotta keep on being hopeful that things will get better and slow down, as well stay thankful and grateful, and keep in touch with family and friends!

And to end with my favorite quote from HEA, “Now go, let your dreams guide you. Reach out and find your, Happily Ever After..” — we will get through this!

This is actually the first I've heard of it. And i haven't seen it mentioned in the mainstream news, just from JoshHendy on here.

The reason you haven’t seen it mentioned in the media is that there’s nothing to report beyond speculation. The first known cases of the virus in Italy were two Chinese tourists in Rome. The third was an Italian man repatriated from Wuhan. Where is the evidence that the virus was introduced and spread by an exodus of Wuhanese workers?

Oh, I absolutely agree with you. I’m ed there’s a salon here encouraging people to come in.

I may need to stop over. I really need a haircut ;)

Thats a total joke. I’ve left my property once in the past 8 days. I say property because I’ve been going out in the backyard and playing with the puppy for a few hours every day. She is very happy to have everyone on lockdown like this;). At least someone‘s enjoying this :)

Being airborne would mean that it literally lives in the air. There is no solid proof this is the case with CV19. The so-called 6 foot rule is due to droplets from coughing and/or sneezing.
Agreed. The way I understand it is that the virus is too heavy to stay airborne. If you cough it will fall to the ground and the 6 foot distance keeps you from getting directly hit by someones spray (gross). A virus like the measles is much lighter and actually floats in the air so you can be infected just by being in the room with someone who is infected.

Agreed. I work for a large power utility in the corporate office. I’m working from home because I am non-essential but the guys in the power plants are still working round the clock. The emergency protocols are all in place but everyone shows up for work to keep the lights on. A major blackout of power could really lead to civil unrest. During hurricanes we’ve had workers sleeping at the power plants in case the roads are washed out. Unsung heroes for sure.

Ok, this did make me laugh. This mom's response to "Distance Learning"

I took my high school students to the middle school to promote our language program and help the little ones make an educated choice as to which language they would like to learn. After the second class, one of my seniors complained to me about how hard it was to be so active and stay perky to get the kids to listen, care and learn. He just wanted to give the kids the facts on a worksheet and sit down. I replied, "You're welcome."

As for park closings, companies are choosing clear milestones for when they pick opening back up days. Cedar Fair has picked mid May because mid May is when 150 year old Cedar Point goes to daily operations, up until then they have Knotts open daily and a smattering of parks with limited operations open on weekend only. It will become increasingly a logistical nightmare for the chain if they can’t open by then.

As insiders have mentioned, Disney will likely next extend until April 20 (after Easter.)

ok first of all NOT gonna read all 424 pages to comment on;
"PHOTOS - All Walt Disney World transportation services now suspended"
and "All Walt Disney World transportation is now suspended from the morning of Wednesday March 18 2020 through the end of the month. "
so now onto my comment. What does this mean for the poor saps now STUCK at each resort hotel that has a upcoming check-out date and a possible flight? I mean these people took the 'Magical Transportation' from the airport to their resorts and everyday there are people that are checking out. And what of those that are landing at the airport expecting this transportation to the resorts because there is that no refund policy of Disney's (which is a complete BS in my opinion)

WDW resorts closed 5pm Friday. If the guests had flights this weekend then they are either sleeping at the airport or staying at a non Disney hotel prior to departing.
