None of us has witnessed anything like this pandemic. It’s not surprising to me that people (even those who feel personally protected) would want to participate in a thread that allows us, in real time, to grapple with all that’s going on around us. I for one find it cathartic, and I doubt I’m alone.
I'm right there with you. It's incredible to watch everything unfold in real time.

Agreed. For me it's fascinating to see the difference between 2 neighboring countries. In cases alone where we have been slowly reopening our cases continue to drop. Where many states did a full reopen and now cases are skyrocketing.

I'm fully vaccinated and then some. While I was happy to finally be able to go on a vacation and see family for the first time since 2019, I'm not thinking there is nothing to worry about with Covid. Why am I here? Still to talk and help others. That's been my focus in life for about a year now.

A year ago, I got a call about a trial. Almost exactly a year later I was back in for booster trials.

There is still so much misinformation out there. I see it here even today. I'm stubborn I guess and want to help this end... we're not there yet.

Is Herd immunity an actual thing? If people can catch it twice how is it a thing? I assume if you can catch it twice you can pass it on.
It is a thing. But it’s been so misunderstood that it’s almost irrelevant now. Like the word rare. It’s more about the level of immunity within a local population required to prevent new outbreaks from starting. But people seem to think it’s some finish line, that after crossing, this all ends.

So I went paint balling today.

It was one of those things where I knew a couple of the guys really well but out of our entire group of 25 people most of them where strangers to me.

Anyways between rounds when we are taking a break and preparing for a new game to start we where all talking.

You could sort of picture this in your head where there are several “pockets” of guys talking about different stuff.

Someone brought up the virus to me and I told them I felt so much safer now that my whole family was vaccinated.

You would have thought I just yelled out the craziest thing anyone has ever said.

Everyone stopped talking and just stared at me.

Then some guy I didn’t know simply said :

“You got vaccinated?”

I said : “Yes”

Then there was this awkward silence that to me felt like it lasted 30 seconds and then people suddenly all went back to talking.

Average age of this group I would say was 28 -30
98% male ( My wife was there )

They looked at me like I might explode, it was eerie.

If you are in the Deep South that would be a typical reaction .

Simply put, herd immunity is when enough people are immune that it becomes statistically unlikely for outbreaks to occur. Yes, people can catch it twice, but that is still a rare occurrence with COVID. Re-infection simply makes it a little harder to get to herd immunity.

The Los Angeles County sheriff has announced his department won’t enforce the county Department of Public Health’s reinstated indoor mask mandate as COVID-19 cases soar in the area, claiming it’s “not backed by science.”

Sheriff Alex Villanueva said in a statement Friday that he “will not expend our limited resources” to enforce the new order.

“Forcing the vaccinated and those who already contracted COVID-19 to wear masks indoors is not backed by science and contradicts the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines,” he added.

So, will they go after people who are unvaccinated, not previously infected and aren't wearing masks?

Sorry to laugh. Seeing cases rise and nobody doing anything about it is not even sad anymore.

They should but they probably won't. It's why I think the whole thing is funny now.
