It seems to me that common sense would be... hey what worked for Australia and New Zealand? Let’s do that.

Except their cases are on the rise, all they did was kick the can down the road.

Why do you lie like that?

What is your source for that data?

Supporting data from New Zealand government of the low amount of cases and most are being detected at the border:

I would love it if our country was in the same situation New Zealand is in regards to active cases.

If we were we would be talking about who the festival performers will be, the recent ride openings and how screwed up all the decisions made by TDO in the last ten years have been.
Well we gotta be free you know?

This Miami Herald article has a pretty even handed look at the travel ban discussion. Kudos to the author for speaking with two different law experts who had somewhat different views and keeping sensational things out. Bottom line is I don't think they would even attempt something like this (on any state) unless there was an explosion of cases in one State that was disproportionate to the rest of the country.

I’m all for a real lockdown and travel ban.

Be careful what you wish for.

Our cases in the UK have gone down from 68,000 a day to 12/13,000 this week and are currently dealing around 25% week on week. Hospitalisations and ICU cases are also going down, especially in the over 80s of which 90% have been vaccinated. We will have vaccinated around 25% of our people in a few days.

However, we are now using quarantine hotels if you come from a red list country (one of which is Portugal with Spain likely next), and our health minister has said if you dont declare you are coming back from a country such as this you can be thrown in jail for 10 years. Never mind its illegal to travel anyway, not only abroad but within the UK and even between counties in England.

We have the ridiculous situation where tonight a government source reassured parents that they can take their children to the playground 'for exercise' but they aren't allowed to socialise with other children or adults. We have been told today no summer holidays are likely either at home or abroad and that restrictions will be the same until the autumn when jabs for variants are produced!

We have no sign or no hope of getting out of this any time soon - in fact the restrictions seem to be getting worse. We seem to be finding variants behind every sofa which will keep us locked up for most of this year IMO - very depressing

I just find the outrage over Biden even considering something so “against the constitution” to be ironic. How many of the same people were outraged when Trump considered it? Or was it OK because it was just Seattle being restricted? I also remember many people fully supporting the FL Governor attempting to block NYers from trying to come to FL in April. He left that restriction in place into July for no good reason.

I don’t think it’s going to happen anyway, but there are ways to limit travel to/from an area without an outright ban on travel. It’s possible they would consider just having the CDC issue guidance to avoid traveling to/from specific areas with surges in cases of the new variant. It wouldn’t be physically stopping people but it would deter a lot of unnecessary travel if that’s the goal.
Different dancers same dance.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. I would feel lost and depressed too.

Agreed it is depressing but also necessary. The reason for the quarantine hotels and restrictions is because we (U.K.) are vaccinating much more quickly than most. Apparently we have vaccinated more people than France, Portugal and I think Spain combined! It is pointless to bring down our infection rates and then allow people to travel and restart the infections.
In my opinion it is better to remain restricted a little longer than risk infections rising and having to start again. The variants are appearing in greater quantities but that’s because the U.K. are actively looking for them so vaccines can be tweaked.
Australia, who have very few cases, have banned international travel till at least October and have only just allowed travel between states. We are not alone in restricting travel. It’s a complete pain but whilst the virus is at large in the world- and it is a worldwide pandemic- international travel must be restricted and mandatory quarantine enforced.
Now you can feel truly depressed!

I think using the term "double-masking" may turn some people off to this, I know I have already seen in on my Facebook feed. What we are really talking about here is the quality of masking. We have probably gotten everyone who is going to wear a mask to wear one, but now we need to focus in more on wearing the best available mask. If you have a good quality, well fitting, multi-layer mask, then double masking really isn't necessary. If that's not what you have access to, then multiple layers of less ideal masks is a good alternative.
I know people are generally wimpy about masks, but just anecdotally I can say that I’ve been double masking since September while teaching all day (kn95 with surgical over). I’m also 8 months pregnant. It’s really not a big deal. Sometimes I’ve gone outside if I get dizzy cuz it’s already a little harder to breathe teaching all day while growing a human, but you get used to it. Access is totally different. But I’m always amazed when people complain. On my preps I just wear the surgical and it feels like wearing a cloud in comparison 😂

What will they do when there are new variants by the time jabs for the current variants are produced? Perpetual restrictions?

That’s the worry - our PM seems perpetually spooked by the scientists now and we do have SAGE scientists spouting off on every need program they can find over here terrifying everyone so people are just asking for more and more restrictions

my sister hasn’t seen my mum properly jn over a year even when we were allowed to see family ans is quite prepared not to se ever for another to keep her safe even though she had her first AZ shot three weeks ago (which incidentally she was as sick as a dog from). My sister also hates me seeing her when k go and get her medicines and food shopping and told me I was wrong to even go and get cat food from my local store as it would put my mum at risk! Our behavioural scientists are having a field day
