Disney’s mask policy is one of the reasons I feel like I should make a trip! If only the cdc wasn’t... ya know... recommending that nobody travel.

About nobody traveling...I also see the travel industry starting to bounce back once more people start to become vaccinated, regardless of what CDC recommends.

Again, not saying right or wrong and we aren't doing any traveling until at least October, but I am just getting a sense that once people are vaccinated, they are going to start pushing for normalcy much more quickly than some may be comfortable with.

I think that recommendation will be relaxed sooner than later. Well before masks are gone. That CDC recommendation really only started around the holidays so it’s not likely to stick around. Once community spread slows it should be ok again to travel if you follow precautions.

I know for me personally, once my family is vaccinated I‘d have no hesitation with traveling including flying. I also know that won’t be for a while, but it’s in sight at least now :)

I'm going to be fully vaccinated next week, my guy is not! So I said he could stay home while I travel...nope! :D

He's hopefully going to get through the VA when available, but we are in 40's so he's probably got a while to wait.

I threw together a spreadsheet to look at seven day periods to take out the day to day variability and calculate the number of new people tested.

From this data:

Dates:::::::::::::::::Cases:::::::New Tests::::New case positivity
1/14-1/20::::::::80,954:::::857,272:::::::::9.44%
1/21-1/27::::::::72,506:::::825,729:::::::::8.78%

Week over week, cases were down 10.44% on 3.7% fewer tests. Positivity for new cases was down 7%. While not drastic, looking at the data on a seven day basis shows a clear trend in the right direction.

Better...but not good. They’ll have It figured out soon 👍🏻

Disney gives masks the dreaded vote of confidence. Sent to my sister the travel agent today:

As COVID-19 vaccines begin to roll out around the world, we’re optimistically looking forward to a time in the future when we can once again share smiles with each other in the Disney Parks and Resorts.

At this time, the CDC recommends continuing to practice healthy behaviors while experts learn more about the protection that COVID-19 vaccines provide under real-life conditions. With that in mind, we will continue to require our Cast Members and Guests ages 2 and up to wear face coverings at all times except when actively eating or drinking while stationary and maintaining appropriate physical distancing. We will also continue existing health and safety measures like temperature checks, reduced capacity, physical distancing and increased frequency in cleaning.

To send this out unprovoked tells me this is step one in a long PR rollout to eventually get to "optional but encouraged" mask wearing.

More looks like: “we’ll still toss you until there’s zero chance to get sued”

Or they are already starting to receive requests for exemptions if people are vaccinated.
Stupid does as stupid travels

“Shut up and mask up”

Is your current hesitation elevated risk of getting infected or being worried about spreading it to others?

Personally, I am enjoying the ridiculously low airfares (lower price than I paid 20 years ago without adjusting for inflation) to fly on mostly half empty planes. I'm following the same protocols and basically doing the same types of things where I travel to that I do where I live so the act of traveling isn't changing my risk or my risk to others (I guess it is different people but not statistically more people).

I don’t want to get sick myself, but also don’t want to be part of the problem or prolong this situation any longer or infect someone else. I wouldn’t travel anywhere right now. It’s getting better, but not there yet. I have no intention to fly somewhere and then only eat takeout in a hotel room or condo and avoid crowds and with community spread where it is in most of the country that’s what I’d be doing. At some point soon I’m hoping cases and the overall situation dictates that travel could be OK again. Everyone else is entitled to do whatever they want, this is just my opinion.

That’s where I’m at too.

Disney is the best option and with crazy good hotel deals it’s quite tempting. Delta is still blocking seats and that’s how I fly so that’s as safe as it can be I suppose.

You shouldn’t be traveling...but you tell yourself whatever you need to feel good 👍🏻😎

Yep...completely reasonable and still wise

@TrainChasers: I’m assuming you feel that way because the mask policy would make you feel safer. Would you feel the same way if you were vaccinated?

It’s not an either or...you seem to be snagged on this.

Vaccinations are to protect you...masks and limited spread are to try to end this and get back to life.

That’s why the “people aren’t gonna do it...”
Is pointless...it’s defeating what they won’t do it for...what they want.

Only if they kept the mask policy during the fall and winter seasons! This year has been the only time in recent history that neither my wife nor I have picked up a transmissible illness during our Disney vacations.
In a weird way I agree. I think out of the last 20 trips or so I have come home sick with something. Masks would help that. Keep it permanent policy! I kid.. can’t stand masks and I won’t be going until they are no longer needed but the thinking of not getting sick ever is appealing.

I’m sure the sanitizer and Lysol wiping could just become a norm.. this could help in that regards. Last trip I came home with the norovirus so bad I had to go to doc in a box for fluids. I was just glad I didn’t get sick there. Now I’m wondering if the next time I Lysol down any restroom area I use if I could avoid it. I’m already in the habit of doing that working in a public school.. some of these ways we’ve adapted really could help us limit sickness long term if we stick with them.. but ya I’d prefer not to mask.

The protocols that are in place are working nicely. Mask sales are brisk, a lot of people look much better with them on and as with things like glasses a person can forget that they are even wearing one. More than once I am in my car driving off and realize I can take the mask off. There are many more things to think about than the mask.

No, I really do understand all of that. But I still believe that people’s attitudes after they are vaccinated are going to make mitigation efforts less popular and much more difficult to enforce. I’m hoping that’s not the case since I’d like to see the world get back to normal as quickly as possible. We’ve pretty much been at home since March and I’m as sick of it as anyone else.

Right..:but you’re expecting “weak willed” to be a factor in a huge, once in a century economic and health situation again.

I’m not saying I’m not tired as hell and looking to break some rules as well. I want action like Poison 1987.

But this is the old military paradigm.
Everyone cares what the soldiers think in their boots in peacetime...but when the shooting starts you want the smart guys at the head of the column.
