Not to be morbid but... when are the deaths in Florida going to start matching the rise in cases over the past two weeks?
It may not follow the exact same patterns as earlier in the outbreak, since hospitalists now have a few more months of experience treating COVID-19 patients. The hospital I work for has a daily meeting to summarize the latest treatment guidelines. The mortality case rate should be lower now. For example, we now have good data that hitting hospitalized patients with heavy doses of steroids early confers a significant mortality benefit. This is now standard protocol.

At this point, it seems to be more about perception then what is actually safest. People will feel "safer" spread out inside a theater then standing close to a bunch of others outside. I have seen people post pictures of someone 20 feet away from everyone else, outside without a mask on and they freak out about how "unsafe" they feel.

That is one of the main benefits of the masks as stated by the WHO and CDC, more than preventing the virus, makes people feel safe. It is also one of the downsides of wearing a mask. People feel safe with it when they really are not much safer. Also primarily why some are some are so emotional about mask wearing. Note - I am not saying people shouldn't wear a mask etc.

That's just it. You can't seem to get a straight answer anywhere and the media doesn't help. Both right/left wing media outlets tell a different story that the people don't know what is what. The government is really failing everyone here regardless of party. What is the hospitalization rate? What are the ages of these new test? How many are asymptomatic? How many more tests are you doing this week vs last week?

Exactly. This information is needed to make educated assumptions.

yes a vast majority are asymptomatic and younger, stated in the press conference

#emotional can be added to the list.

First a note that I don't think was mentioned. There were over 68,000 new people tested in the data from yesterday which is a lot more than the prior record. New case positive was over 13% which is too high from a surveillance perspective.

Here is the age breakdown of the last two days:

AgeCases 6/24-6/25Percent
0-4
231
2%
5-14
422
3%
15-24
2994

65-74
727
5%
75-84
372
3%
85+
212
2%

47% of the new cases were 15-34 and the median age is again under 34. I have no idea if these recent trends are the result of testing a lot more asymptomatic people in that age group or if the behavior of young adults is leading to rampant spread among them.

You know what's funny?
"As I said from the start, if the positivity rate rose above 10%, the State of Texas would take further action to mitigate the spread of COVID-19," Abbott said in a press release. "At this time, it is clear that the rise in cases is largely driven by certain types of activities, including Texans congregating in bars."

"We want this to be as limited in duration as possible. However, we can only slow the spread if everyone in Texas does their part," Abbott said. "Every Texan has a responsibility to themselves and their loved ones to wear a mask, wash their hands, stay six feet apart from others in public, and stay home if they can."

The "fear" wasn't a statement on how Abbot/DeSantis feel. They probably think they are acting at "exactly the right time." It's about people's reactions upon hearing the news, which are dependent on if they believe those Govs would react "too soon/exactly right / too late."
I realized you meant fear reaction of some people and not the government. That fear is based on the #media's focus on single metrics like it is a score, win or lose. It is much more complex than that. It is just nature of all #media in today's environment. They are losing money and are drven to write simple, sensational articles to drive traffic in most part to stay alive as a business. there is very little local reporting as all news on a local basis has laid off significant parts of their newsrooms, real journalists and replaced them with low cost employees and freelancers. Some of those are still good but a shell of what it was even a few years ago much less in the past. People would be surprised how many articles are written solely by computers today based on algorithms to achieve the most clicks. But I digress , back to the topic somewhat.

FL and TX essentially closing bars. Wow.

I‘m glad they acknowledge the issue. That seems like a smart move right now. Tough pill to swallow for bar owners. Hopefully they reboot and allow them to re-open soon with proper distancing and masks for workers and anyone not seated.
...big fat pill for the politicians to swallow too.

I will give them credit for highlighting their own stupidity from the mothership, however.

I can’t imagine Disney would be crazy enough to open in mid-July at this point. I love going to Disney (hell I was there for my birthday the day before the park closed in March), but it would be a public relations nightmare and a disservice to public health and the health of their employees at this point if they try to continue to reopen in mid July.

Universal (Sea World....Busch Gardens...) should receive the same heat, though. Are they being called to shut down?
