I just find it comical that many of the same people saying that to close things would be "sad" also say they don't want to social distance or wear masks so that things CAN OPEN. Restrictions are put in place, people can follow if they so choose. I think people arguing against these sort of restrictions/lockdowns are that they want carte blanche or nothing.

And the U.S. isn't Canada. We're very proud to ignore the rules here, it's a national pastime.

2. There is no practical way to make masks mandatory. It just won't work. I'm not saying people shouldn't wear masks. I think they should. I'm just saying that I don't think the government can effectively enforce that. Let's be honest. People who don't want to wear a mask aren't going to care if it's mandatory or not. And we're not about to start jailing people because they won't. It's just not a problem the government can solve.
Sure there is - the governor of MA did - Masks are required indoors as well as outdoors where 6' minimum distance is not able to be maintained. $300 fine per violation. Whether or not they're actually handing out citations, I don't know. But from what I've seen, most people are complying.

And that’s how you do it. Everyone knows what the consequences are. Sometimes children need a timeout to grasp what they are doing. Fines usually get attention.

I'm not arguing the numbers, they are real and going up but deaths seem flat which is good, although they could catch up with all the recent cases.

For Florida, wasn’t it stated that like half of the new cases are people under 37? If that is accurate outside of just one day of new cases, I would doubt there would be any sort of tremendous death from this group. Now if we see spread to the elderly...

That is certainly a concerning graph. What's odd is that those cases have diverged quite a bit, deaths have tracked much more closely between the EU and the US. (EU still doing better, but not by nearly as much.)

They have definitely tracked down in a similar manner. Is there a graph like this that compares hospitalizations?

Universal mask-wearing has been determined to be highly effective when combined with other measures such as lockdowns, social distancing, hand washing, and testing. There isn't much (or maybe any) data on how effective it is when only half the people wear masks - many assume that it's half as effective, but I haven't seen anything to support that. At this point, it is temporary and it can't hurt, so masks are recommended. With the way the virus is spreading and given how devastating it can be, doing anything will help. But don't think that wearing a mask without keeping 6 feet away from an infected person will necessarily protect you.

Here is one study that attempts to assess that; it's been linked to before. https://www.preprints.org/manuscript/202004.0203/v2

A conservative assessment applied to the COVID-19 estimated R0 of 2.4 might posit 50% mask usage and a 50% mask efficacy level, reducing R0 to 1.35, an order of magnitude impact rendering spread comparable to the reproduction number of seasonal influenza. To put this in perspective, 100 cases at the start of a month becomes 31,280 cases by the month’s end (R0 = 2.4) vs. only 584 cases (R0 = 1.35).

...pessimistic regimes (e.g. due to poor implementation or population compliance) [that] nonetheless result in a beneficial effect in suppressing the exponential growth of the pandemic.

Checking in from a local zoo in the first real world application I've seen of "mandatory" six foot distancing in an amusement environment. All I can say is "lol." Nobody is even pretending to try. Nobody cares anymore. In the collective consciousness of the American public, COVID-19 is over.

I got that feeling last night at the grocery. The last time I went (~2 weeks ago) >90% have masks on. Last night it was <50%.

At least in that picture at the zoo there are a fair number of masks.

Exactly right. There are just some people still living in the "scary" world of two months ago. Anywho! Off to Vegas to gamble, sit be the pool, eat in restaurants like an adult...

BTW, did we mention gyms, the petri dishes of society, are now all open and Disneyland is opening in a couple of weeks? But hey, keep postin' those graphs.
This isn't going to help anything, though. People are just being reckless at this point. All of the shutdown efforts over the past 3 months will be for nothing if we end up eventually overrunning hospitals anyway.
