If conventioneers don't like Disney style theming and would rather have Vegas then don't have your convention at Disney.
This is exactly what Disney is worried about. The hotel wasn't built because conventioneers were demanding to hold their conventions at Disney World but at a hotel more to their taste.

In this case, a typical Disney moderate is really a bad fit for a convention due to their layout, which resemble sprawling motels more than hotels. As for the theming, I do understand the point that has been made in this thread by @lazyboy97o & others that this is essentially a standard hotel with theming inspired by Catalan modernism applied to spaces that ignore if not contradict the principles of the style. It's not going to be featured in any architectural journals nor win awards. It does disappoint me that Disney seems pretty indifferent to the architecture of these new towers, as also demonstrated (perhaps more so) by the Riviera. I also don't think it's going to challenge the Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Wilderness Lodge, etc. in terms of charm and atmosphere. As primarily a convention hotel designed to widen Disney's offerings, however, I think it looks more appealing than what the moderates for the most part offer at present. I also generally prefer the set-up of a hotel tower along these lines to the motel style of the moderates.

Just to clarify my point. There is a theme that they are accomplishing in the cheap design of the value resorts. This tower is all design and no theme. I'm sure it wasn't monetarily cheap though bu it has very little substance. It's like fancy looking costume jewelry on a shallow woman.

You know people don't have to stay in the Tower, right? The whole resort is still there (minus fountain). After check in, guests can choose not to go back to the Tower at all if they don't want to. :D

Will it replace Yacht/Beach as my favorite? Of course not, those hotels are in a league of their own due to location. But it's a FANTASTIC alternative when you just can't swing those deluxe prices this time around.

Good lord, I'm just having fun posting pictures, getting excited about a trip to Disney. Some of you seem like your life is actually going to be affected by this...

I don’t think having an opinion on the design of the new tower is really a big deal one way or the other. I own DVC and will likely never stay here, but I can still have an opinion. I think it’s weird how much it bothers you if someone doesn’t like the Tower.

I see what you did there! :D

Never been there that a convention, at Coronado, made me see Convention guests. (Stayed 2014, 2015, May 2016, 2018- August-September, 2018- late November, 2019, first week of May) The only conventions that we noticed, we at ESPN- rooms were booked, there for Invictus, and the May Cheer dance thing- we are not there much, but I only noticed Group type people there then- otherwise it feels dead.

I understand that. My feeling is that WDW shouldn't be trying to be all things to all groups of people. Sure, there should be a nice variety, but be yourself and retain the identity that made you special to begin with.

Imo people need to stop using the word cheap and just say the execution wasn’t the best or the design they picked was lackluster. Because nothing Disney does would be considered in a monetary sense of things cheap. I’m pretty sure this hotel cost at least 50 to 80 million dollars to build.

Cheap. It's a perfectly acceptable word to use. It can be used in many contexts and understood as such.

This idea that conventioneers were somehow demanding something “not Disney” seems distorted at best. Disney’s convention business hasn’t been suffering and it would mean people are asking for what exactly? Having more centrally located rooms and convention oriented amenities in no way dictate the majority of the design decisions made.

Just goes to show ya how different experiences can be and how those personal experiences can affect one’s opinion. We’ve stayed there once. Just once, and there were 3 conventions happening over our 9 day stay. I saw suits/ties more than shorts/ T-shirts every time we went to the food court, lobby area, etc. They basically closed off the courtyard between El Centro and Casitas 1 everyday for lunch/afternoon convention events and then again nearly every evening for dinner/receptions. I had to walk around the building, literally passing my room, to get in another pathway several times. I especially loved the conference that had participants cheering “Can I sell this? YES I CAN!!!”

The complaints about this architecture being "not Disney" is, IMO, just silly. It's the same argument used against the Swolphin.

How is a big concrete A-frame of the Contemporary "Disney themed"? It's just a big chunk of modern architecture.

How is the Polynesian "Disney themed"? It's just Polynesian themed architecture.

How is the Grand Floridian "Disney themed"? It's just a building with a certain architectural style.

The same with the Swolphin. The same with the new CSR tower.

And when Disney tries to make something specifically Disney themed either with an in-your-face giant fiberglass characters or a subtle BatB inspired lounge... it gets slammed for being gaudy or not respecting the architecture or cramming Disney down our throats!

Have to agree with you- in different experiences. Our experiences are really early or evening/night. We never use pool at all and food court early typically or late. It is great then, unless a big group is checking in.

I absolutely hate the architecture of the Contemporary but the interior is awesome. All of the resorts have their super themed hotels and ones that are not as themed.

Thank you for pointing this out. None of the deluxe resorts at WDW, except the Lodges, are particularly amazing. As a matter of fact I find them all extremely basic 🤷‍♂️

Yes
Keep in mind that some people complaining the Tower isn’t Disney enough are also mad the new buses are too Disney

There is a very big difference between the tacky bus wraps and the new tower. Honestly I think the tower looks fine. The inside looks a lot more interesting than the inside. It’s just that it doesn’t really match the rest of the resort. It’s the Mission: Break Out of resort towers.
