Contemplating: The new SSE

Reviewing the video by martin of the older version of SSE with the elaborate finale...

I can't help but wonder what the new version will bring. Will the new ending be big and engaging? The last version was arguably a step down compared to the earlier versions... It had tons of black empty space and just some lighting FX whereas the earlier versions seemed full of things to look at and entire walls of lighting FX.

What do you suppose will happen? Will it be grand again?

I would certainly expect grand. In a way, the ending is the most important part of the ride IMO, because that's the part that is progressive and ever changing. It represents the future of human communication.

The most recent ending was always weak and disappointing to me. It just seemed to lack the type of grandiose flavor that I would expect from an attraction of that magnitude. The only part of the ending that held it together was the great musical score.

I have no way of predicting what we will see from the new ending, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was more elaborate, more engaging, and covered with more lighting effects.

I think with the last version, they were trying to pull off a "less is more" type of effect. It was very simple and to the point. There were no AA's (just dolls basically) and there were lots of empty spaces and very few effects. With the overhaul they are working on, I think it's inevitable that they will change things around and move away from the "less is more" approach.

I guess i'm a little worried someone will think even less is more ;)

"Please remain seated. Your time travel vehicle will now begin a descent backwards through bare, empty black hallways that will give travelers the chance to close their eyes and imagine the bright future of communication."

The jurys out until Novemeber - though Siemens up to now havn`t done badly at all. With what they have done inside the Geosphere to present day since it closed indicates it is far more than just a dust down and tidy up. I`m intrigued with what they will do with the descent too - there isn`t that much space to work with. Perrin and Cronkite used a whole load of mirror effects and forced perspective to make the space seem much larger than it is, and Irons used darkness to do the same.

I`m cautiously optimistic :)

Merf; glad you got the vid. Welcome to the club

This is where we (the zealous Disney fans) get into trouble...keep your expectations reasonable, and chances are, you won't be let down by the actual product.

I mean, what would've been the BEST thing to happen to the attraction since it opened, doesn't seem like its going to happen...new, more comfortable vehicles. :(

But hey, we get nice screens to distract us from our discomfort. :lookaroun:D

Maybe its just me, but I'll take a wandless sphere AND a simple (or moderate) SSE rehab any day...emphasis on the word WANDLESS.

I'm very nervous about this refrub.I was really attached to the Irons version of SSE and even made a special trip to see it before it closed.I had only been on the Cronkite version when I was very young and don't remember it's finale,so I've always had positive thoughts about the Irons finish.

As for the refurb,I'm kinda optimistic but nervous at thye same time.Hopefully Siemens will push for a informative and intellegent storytelling and not a Stich/Nemo-ish version.*shudders*I'm not even sure if I like the idea of the screens!Sure,it's technological and a big part of the ever changing Epcot, but I think they would distract from the ride a bit to much.(Can anyone say Mission Space?-I know a ton of people that missed half the ride becasue they were to buisy pushing the butoons for their "mission"-yet another reason to bring back Horizons)

As for the cartoony worries I have,I don't think that Siemens would stoop so low, especially after removing the wand.

We'll just have to wait and see..SSE!:p

I am really excited that there is a Horizon's spin (hopefully) on the new SSE.
I got this off the Siemen's website:

"This adventure through time leads ultimately to the very top of Spaceship Earth's geodesic dome, where guests arrive at the present. The time travel adventure will be enhanced through new, interactive touch screens installed aboard each “time machine” that will enable guests to create their own visions of the future and see themselves in that future."

Here is the link: http://usa.siemens.com/index.jsp?sdc_p=c194fi1034571lmn1204641o1443736ps4uz3&sdc_bcpath=1204641.s_4,

I don't know if anyone else has linked this info, so don't flame me for any repeats! I think the new SSE is going to really be great.

I can already tell those video screens are going to be annoying. I bet it will be less about looking at actual stuff going down the descent but rather use the lame video screen like mission:space and all the other rides that Fitzgerald and eric jacobson love to build.

The way I see it, Disney can't afford to get this wrong, and I'm confident they'll do a good job. This is a universally recognizable park icon we're talking about, Epcot's definitive attraction - if they were to screw this up, they'd get the same reaction Journey Into Your Imagination got, albeit x 10. If they do a half-assed job of this, it'll be a complete and utter embarassment and a tragic waste of a stunning structure... But I don't honestly believe they'll screw it up.

I loved the ride the way it was (music, narration, everything...) but I'll admit the ride system itself really felt its age. I have a minor concern that they might turn SSE into a little bit of an advert for Siemens, but this should be an unfounded worry. I'm still excited to see 'our Spaceship Earth' brought into the 21st century with style!!!:D

I just hope the music score is good. I just realized one of my favorite parts of the attraction music wise is going to go vamoos. The part where you are turned around backwars and you see the model of spaceship earth on your right with the stream of silver lighting effects going around it. I just love the music that is played there as its all music and no vocal right at that point I believe.

As for the ending, I'm partial to the current finale music (it makes me want to cry it's so beautiful! ) so I'd love to see that remain in some updated form. But visually, I'm not sure I want Siemens to show me their version of the future on too grand a scale... I'd rather the ride end more quietly, creating the same sense of inspiration and wonder that always used to give me a great feeling as I left the old ride... The music and narration is the key in my mind. I don't need to see too much.

Yes. Great summary. Thanks.

(Except the crying part; there's no crying in SSE.)

Agreed. Hopefully, there is not a single scene in which the video screen upstages actual three-dimensional props, sets, and characters. Video is a good addition to the attraction, not a good replacement.

I am a huge SSE lover and am a little skeptical about changes. The Touch Screens sound cool ONLY if they are used at the finale over the future scene. Otherwise they're just going to be distracting and irritating. I think they could be a Horizons-like touch at the end, which would be nice.
