confused about tv resolution...

I am confused about resolutions..My tv is similar to this..not the exact model but close enough...I think mine is 5000:1 instead of 8000:1 but anyway mine is 720p. I just bought a PS3 yesterday and it can display 1080p. So does that mean I can't get the full advantage out of the PS3 or does the HDMI cord convert it so my tv can display the correct resolution?

Also, I have an older receiver for my surround sound and I only have connections on the back for my VCR, my other DVD player and my DVR. I have an optical plugin available on the receiver that I am not using for anything. Would that give me surround sound for the PS3? I probably just need to get a new receiver but I am trying to make due for a while.
Thanks in advance!

To my understanding, because your TV is only 720p then it'll only physically show 720 lines of pixels (usually 1366 to a line in 720's case). So even though the TV will take a 1080p input, it won't show the full resolution.

As far as I know receiver wise, the only surround sound output on the back of the PS3 is an digital optical connection. If your S/S reciever has a spare optical input then fire it in there.

Hope this helps.

720p means that it can display 720 lines of pixels (progressively).

This means that there is no "break" in the pixels. 720i will show 720 lines but they alternate...every other line. (So, only 360 lines will be displayed at one time).

The PS3 is capable of 1080p so yes, your tv won't show the best picture quality available but the difference isn't all that noticeable to the human eye.

Your HDMI cable converts it to show 720p. With just a component cable (red, white, and yellow)...you would not be getting High Def.

Nothing on the market can upconvert your 720p to a 1080p.

The 5000:1 ratio is for "streaking" really. The higher the number, the less "blurring" you'll get during fast action scenes.

I really wouldn't worry about it though...it's not like you would ever notice.

Actually the contrast ratio is the ratio from the brightest white to the darkest black. Blurring of fast action scenes is actually a factor of the monitors response time which is how long it takes for a pixel to refresh. Most of your moderate to high end LCD's are boasting time of 5ms to 2ms (lower is better) which all but completely eliminates the ghosting effect.

I think your brain is still fried from the Pats loss.

Component is Red, blue, green & you get HIGH DEF.

Red, yellow, white is composite, and not high def.

I bought an optical cord last night and it worked!!!:sohappy: It shares the "video 2" on the receiver with the DVR. The DVR uses the rca jacks connection. The sound is so much better than when I am using the regular DVD player.

What makes the picture and sound quality better? Is it the DVD or Blu-Ray disk itself or is it the unit that I am playing it in? The reason why I ask that is because I put one of my Family Guy dvd's in the PS3 and it only displayed 4:3 and the sound was only 2 channel. Does the DVD have to be "programed" to display and sound a certain way?

The picture quality is way better than when I am just watching tv with the "digital cable". It also seems a little better than the HD channels that I get. Overall I am really happy with the PS3. The only thing that stinks about it is the selection of games isn't really that great. We bought Spiderman and Sonic. They are pretty cool games. I wish they would come out with Jeopardy or something like the PS2 had. Then my DH and I can play together..

I am not sure about the sound issue but your screen format will be dictated by 2 things....what is actually on the DVD and the settings on your TV. Many TV shows and older movies are in a standard 4:3 (almost square) format. If that is the case with your family guy DVD then what is being displayed on your TV is correct. However you TV will have settings in it that can override this aspect ratio. For most TV's you can set it to make everything fit the 16:9 aspect ratio but this will distort your image by stretching it horizontally. This is not a big deal with cartoons but real people can look very fun house mirrorish.

It also sounds like you have a standard DVR and not a HD one. If your DVR is integrated into your cable or satellite receiver you will definitely want to look at upgrading it to an HD one.

EDIT: If you are using an old DVD player your PS3 will give you a much better picture as the Blu-Ray player in it will upconvert your standard DVD's to near HD quality.

The link is just taking me to the cable one home page. If the box connects to your TV using an HDMI or component cables then it will display HD. If it can only connect through composite cables or a coaxial cable then it is not HD. If the box is not HD you more than likely do not have the HD package from your cable provider. Since you have cable you can more than likely fix all of this with a phone call. When I had Comcast there was no charge to trade in my regular box for a HD one and the HD package was only a couple of bucks a month.

I am pretty sure I had that same box when I was with Comcast. It is an HD box and you will need to connect it your TV via the component cables. Under normal settings your TV should adjust the aspect ratio and resolution automatically based on what signal it receives. Are you running your sound through your TV or an A/V receiver?

I changed the settings on my PS3 to allow 4:3 video formats to become full screen...I put Family Guy back in and it was full screen this time but the color was a little funky to me...so we may just use the regular DVD player for that...and I also tryed my workout DVD and the color on it was horrible...really grainy... BUT I put my Pirates DVD in and it looked and sounded great. So I guess the bottom line is the PS3 is really great for Blu-Ray, PS3 games and movie DVD's. Not too bad I guess...:)

With a 32" display, you wouldn't be able to see much difference between formats.
Unless you sit really really close....
That's good to know....
I have noticed that most larger tv's have the 1080p resolution anyway. I guess there is a reason for that...
