BEST NEWS EVER!

The hilarious Conan O'brien will be taking over Jay Leno's spot in 2009 by becoming host of the Tonight Show.

FULL STORY HERE

This is superlative news. Conan is the funniest, most intelligent, and overall best talk show host on televsion. Finally, he's getting the recognition (and time slot) he deserves.

My only worry is that Conan's brand of humor will have to be toned down or have to be generalized for the masses as a result to the earlier time.

Will Frankenstein no longer waste a minute of our time?
Will Max Weinberg continue to icely look at Conan after the monologue?
Will we still travel to the year 2000?
Will we still observe Pierre Bernard's recliner of rage?

I CERTAINLY HOPE SO.

Your thoughts?

This is the first I have heard of this! I LOVE Conan. He's just on so late, I never get a chance to watch him anymore. I think he'll do great. Good for him! :king: :sohappy:

I hate to rock the boat, but I don't find Conan funny at all. I am not a fan. I don't think this is good news for the Tonight Show. Yea he attracts the 18 to 34 Males, but the Tonight SHow audience is braoder than that. Obviosuly, NBC wants to focus late night on that demographic.

Not my first choice.

I love Conan, but truthfully I don't stay up late enough to watch any of them! Thank goodness for Conan reruns on comedy central. :) However, the all time king is Jon Stewart... none of 'em can touch him. :king:

The only bad part is that Leno will be around another 5 years. Face it, he sucks. Conan is much better, and will only help the Tonight Show's future. And soon he'll be on earlier, which will be great.

Conan's the best late night host out there now.

Did you see when he played "Old Timey" baseball?

I was in tears during that bit...;)

David Letterman STILL can't get the Tonight Show! No, I jest. Conan is a love him or loathe him kind of guy. It is hard to find "the guy" for that job. Many are called, but few find the combination of audience approval and host desire to do the job on a long term basis.

I just want to take the opportunity to list a few who did not get the permanent host job for the Tonight Show: JoanRiversArsenioHallPatSajakChevyChaseMagicJohnsonDavidLettermanGaryShandlingJonStewartCraigKilbornDickHackett. Okay, that's all I can think of right now.

2009 should be an interesting year when Jay Leno goes on his yearlong farewell tour, if he does it in any way like Johnny Carson did.

This is good news for Conan. Since he openly admitted he'd like to "move up" and he's in a contract year, NBC had to promise him the Tonight Show or risk losing him to CBS. Had David Letterman pulled the same ploy before Johnny Carson left, he'd be hosting the Tonight Show now. Back then, Dave never made noises about moving up out of respect for Johnny.

And that's partially why I doubt Jay Leno will get anything like the farewell Johnny received. Jay gets good ratings and regularly wins his time slot, but has little respect in the industry. The Tonight Show scarcely gets even an Emmy nomination, no less actually winning one. Critics hate how "safe" the show is and how wretched Jay is as an interviewer. Carson, on the other hand, was the undisputed king of late night talk TV for 30 years.

I think Conan would've fit in better at CBS with potentially replacing Dave sometime down the road. Dave is still a much better interviewer, but Conan has improved. Conan (and Jon Stewart) are the only hosts I can think of that are quick enough, funny enough, and talented enough to replace Dave. Whenever Dave decides to call it quits (hopefully many years from now), Jon Stewart should replace him.

I love The Tonight Show and when I saw a preview for it last night where it said he was leaving, I was REALLY sad. I felt a little better when I found out that he's not leaving until 2009 though, that gives me plenty of time to go out there to watch him. I watch him every night and think he's one of the greatest talk show hosts ever. That's just IMO though, don't flame me for it. I love watching Conan too, but it seems like being on so late he doesn't get near the budget that Jay does. Conan has such a great potential and I think that with taking over the Tonight Show, he will be able to do so much with it. These next 5 years are going to be amazing, but what will follow after that, we'll just have to wait and see. My question is, who's going to take over Conan's spot right now of being after Jay? Excellent job NBC and Jay both!

Interesting news, but it won't really affect me. I am MUCH more of a Letterman fan. In fact, please don't take offense but, I can't stand to watch Leno. But it's just one of those preference things and I'm sure that plenty of people feel the same way about Letterman. I really liked Craig Kilborn and was sad to see him leave last month. It will be interesting to see who his replacement is.

If I could make book on this, I think I'd put some high odds on this not happening. I wonder if we'll ever hear the details of this contract? Maybe I'm just an old sceptic, but it seems mighty strange that NBC would commit itself like this five years out. I'm thinking this is some sort of trial balloon to test the reaction of the public.

I know NBC claims it wants to avoid a 1990-type 'behind the scenes' battle but that was some of the best publicity that money couldn't buy. :)

Johnny Carson set the standard for late night comedy and I hope they keep that bar high enough so most are unable to reach it.

I hope that Conan doesn't have to tone down the weirdness, he appeals to my sense of humor

Also, IMO, Triumph was better as a one minute act on Conan, now he's just not funny! :(

And females

I end up talking tv with a lot of our patients (it's a pretty safe subject, once the weather has been thouroughly discussed) and Conan seems to be well-loved by people of all ages, in my area, anyway. Some very professional and serious-looking people have admitted to being secret fans of Conan's silly brand of humor.

Of today's hosts, Leno comes third for me after O'Brien and Letterman. I liked him as an occasional stand-in when Carson was still running the show, but after he took over I kind of felt Leno'ed out.

5 years is a long ways off. Who knows what could happen with Leno and Conan in 2009?

I think Conan is great. Leno is a shadow of his former self. Back in the early 80's, he was one of the best stand ups around. Leno was edgy, angry, and very funny. What he did to the Tonight Show is a shame. I'd rather watch Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn than Leno and Letterman.

Conan's appeal is that even when a joke does not react well with the audience, he can make his failure funny.

Leno on the other hand (even after a joke bombs) will still carry on like he's the funniest guy in the world.

Plus, his orginal characters are hilarious (Fed Ex Pope anybody?);)

Anyone doubting Conan's genius, download some of the sketches on this page

Moleculo and the Old timey Baseball sketches are comic gold.

Triumph is definitely still funny. His best of DVD is in my top 10 already. Hopefully he won't have to be toned down too much, as it would ruin the show.
