We've "checked" with consumer reports when buying our last 6 cars. They hated 2 out of 4, but both of those are probably still running; one is 21 years old (I got rid of it last year), and the other is 14 years old, and I'll be getting rid of it soon. One car, which they liked, was killed by a tree in its prime, and the other three ( one of which they liked when new, but don't like anymore)are being used daily.

So it's been 1/2 & 1/2 for us.

I think it's her money, and ultimately her choice. And only 1 person tried to lead her to the Jetta :)

:lookaroun

Actually I'd say the two people on this thread who spend waaaaay too much time thinking about cars were leaning toward the Jetta.

I haven't driven or compared both cars, but based on my general knowledge, I would expect the Toyota to be:

1. Less expensive (in original price, gas, maintenance, etc.)
2. More practical
3. More reliable
4. More comfortable with more features for the price

I would expect the VW to be:

1. Sportier - more responsive and more fun to drive
2. More unique

For my personal tastes, I would go with the VW, but it really depends on what you're looking for.

Enjoy!

pffft... I was trying to get her to go towards a third one

If we wanted to go with a lil' more VW practicality, the 5-door rabbit actually carries more than the Jetta

Jetta's are @$$. Once they are out of Warranty... they are garbage. Stick with the Corolla... it will last a good 4-5 years longer than the Jetta, at least!

I completely agree.

I owned a New Beetle...had the engine rebuilt 3 times...had to go in for electrical problems countless times (blown headlights, AC wouldn't work, power windows just stopped working, moonroof wouldn't close...) (This was all within the warranty time...until the end...and when I had to start paying for these crappy little issues...I got rid of it)

My gf had a Jetta...hated it.

She also had an Audi A4 Cabrio...and had to turn that in because she got sick of all the dumb problems.

I would definitely tell you to go with the Corolla...Jetta's look nice...and they're suppose to be "reliable" but the only thing you can rely on is spending a lot of time in the service dept over stupid little things that just annoy you.

Well if the floor is open to additional nominations, I'd like to suggest either the Sport Exige Cup:

Aston Martin Vanquish S Ultimate Edition:

Or the new M3:

Did you hear that? I think I just heard the sound of someone's head exploding . . .

. . . I think it was coming from the general direction of the offices of Consumer Reports.

Hey, the M3 has regenerative braking.:lookaroun

now now now Gary.. I believe 4 doors are needed.

You'll have to replace them with these:

Evo X

M5 Touring

Good luck with the Jetta...(you'll need it).

Ohhh we can play a fun game!

Keep us up to date with your headlight replacements!

We'll play for a year....the over/under is 5.

Anywho...good luck with it and may you have no problems! (Oh, and at least let the gas pedal hit the floor once).

Fooled Y'all!!

Okay, so I didn't check out Mitsubishi's last weekend because I didn't think I could afford one. We went to go check out the Jetta this morning but there was more wrong with the paint than we 1st thought (scratches/door dings) and they wouldn't cut me a break on the cost.

So...we went over to the Mitsubishi dealer and I found MY CAR!!! 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer

It really is...since the first time I saw this car it's reminded me of the S40, I like to call it the "Baby S40".
the Volvo S20/V30? LOL... personally, I think it looks better than the S40- it flows better, and doesn't have some of the rough edges of the S40

I think your car wants to stretch its legs.... take it on vacation to Florida :D

Out of curiosity, what was the total out the door on it? My brother needs a car.

Actually, that car is MOVING back to FL eventually with me (within the next 2 years)

As far as the price, I'll have to check the window sticker compared to what I actually paid, I got a REALLY good deal b/c my dad knows the sales manager - I paid $18,944
