Trip Report *Completed* Sleepless on the Savanna - Nov/Dec 2023

Hello Friends, and Happy Holidays!

As you already know if you caught my Pre-Trip Report, my husband J, our 2yo son L, and I got back from a WDW trip earlier this month. This was L's fourth trip, J's eighteenth, and my twentieth! Since I already did introductions in the PTR,, let's jump straight into the trip!

Sunday, November 26th - Travel Day

I set my alarm for 4:15 am - thankfully, there wasn't much to be done this morning, since my in-laws had kept L at their house for a few hours the day before, which gave J and I time to get everything packed and get the car loaded up, save for any last-minute items that we would need to use that morning. I barely slept the night before. I always get travel anxiety the night before a trip - what if I have the dates wrong, and we get down there and have nowhere to stay? What if I dreamed about making park reservations, but didn't actually make them? What if Disney's website cancels all of our dining reservations? It always makes for a restless nights' sleep. I tossed and turned most of the night, and finally accepted my fate at 4am, and rolled out of bed before my alarm went off.

I got myself ready, woke J up at 4:30, and once we were both ready, we loaded the go bag with last-minute items into the car. J thankfully remembered that he hadn't seen me pack L's stroller flag, which is a lifesaver when you're trying to find your stroller in a crowded stroller parking lot. I knew exactly where it was in L's closet, so I asked J to very quietly and very carefully get L out of bed and take him to the car, so that I could turn the lights on in L's room and grab the flag from the closet. As J was walking down the stairs carrying L, I heard L wake up and say "Dada? What are you doing? Dada, where are we going?" and when J didn't answer him and told him to go back to sleep, L said "Dada, where's Mama?" 😂 We were so hoping we'd be able to keep him asleep as we were putting him in his car seat, but it was not meant to be. We loaded L up, hopped in the car, and were pulling out of the driveway at 5:04 am.

Unfortunately, it took over an hour of driving before L finally fell back asleep. We love leaving early to beat the Atlanta traffic - we don't love how it messes with L's sleep. Two hours after we left the house, we made our first stop for breakfast and a bathroom break at Buc-ee's. I sat in the back with L once we got back to the car, to help him with his breakfast and try to avoid a huge mess in my backseat.

IMG_7967.jpeg

As we were leaving Buc-ee's, I checked our ETA on the GPS, and it said we'd arrive around 12:30. If only that had been the case. We stopped again just past the GA-FL border for gas and another bathroom break, and everything went downhill from there. Around the time we were driving through Lake City (where I-10 and I-75 meet), traffic starting to build up. The GPS on my phone showed nothing but red for miles and miles. I'm not sure what the issue was - it was raining, so that may have caused some problems - but traffic was backed up all the way to the Florida turnpike, and the drive that should have taken us 7.5 hours took us over 9 hours. 🙃 Finally, at 2:06 pm, we were pulling through the gates.

IMG_7969.jpeg

Our room was not ready yet, so we decided to stop in at Jambo House for lunch at The Mara. Of course, I got the room ready text right as we were getting out of the car. 😂🤷‍♀️

IMG_7970.jpeg

We headed into Jambo House anyway, grabbed some pictures of the Christmas tree, and mobile-ordered lunch. I clicked "I'm Here" as soon as we got in the elevator to head down to The Mara. It took about twenty minutes for our food to be ready - I always forget that the resort QS tends to take longer than the QS in the parks - I guess because they have fewer staff. For lunch, I got the vegetarian falafel platter, J got the chicken strips, and L got the kids' hamburger meal with fries and grapes.

IMG_7971.jpeg

IMG_7972.jpeg

I was underwhelmed by my meal - it was unfortunately pretty bland, which was surprising for falafel. After we finished lunch, we headed over to the Flamingo Crossings Target to pick up a Drive-Up order I had placed for things like milk, bottled water, snacks for the room, etc. We probably should have dropped our stuff off at Kidani Village first before heading to Target, because we ended up having to put everything in my lap/at my feet, which made for a fun time trying to get out of the car at Kidani. When we got to Kidani, Bell Services unloaded the car, including our groceries, and we parked in the garage and headed up to the room. Of course, we made a beeline for the balcony to check out the view - not too shabby!

IMG_7973.jpeg

IMG_7974.jpeg

Once we had gotten in to the room, I tried to call Bell Services to bring up our luggage. I sat on hold for over ten minutes before the call dropped. I tried again - same thing. I ended up just sending J down to go get our luggage himself - he said when he got down there, the two CMs working the Bell Services area didn't appear to be busy, so I'm not sure what the deal was - maybe an issue with their phone lines. Regardless, J brought our luggage up to the room, and I set about getting everything unpacked and organizing the room. J and I set up L's sleeping arrangements - an inflatable toddler bed inside of a blackout tent - and finally, we were done and headed out of the room shortly before 6pm.

Friday, December 1st - Epcot Day - Continued

While on the Gran Fiesta Tour, our boarding group for GOTG was called, so we headed that way once we were off the ride. We set up rider swap, and I sent Jason on his way to ride first, while I took Lincoln over to the playground behind Creations Shop to get out some energy. We had never been to this playground before, but L really enjoyed it. It was a little crowded, and I'm a fairly anxious mom, so I was trailing L the entire time he was playing.

While L was playing, J was riding GOTG to the soothing sounds of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." Once he was off, L and I headed his way, and then J took over with L while I rode. I got "I Ran" - J and I were both glad to get new-to-us songs this time around.

L had fallen asleep in his stroller (finally) while I was riding, so J and I took our time strolling around Creations Shop (still hate that name), before popping into Club Cool. We had not gone to Club Cool in years, and this was our first time in the new location. We both tried Beverly for the first time in ages, for old times' sake - it's still as gross as we remembered. If you ever find yourself in Atlanta and go to the Georgia Aquarium (an absolute must-do when you're in Atlanta), I highly recommend buying a combo ticket and heading across the street to the World of Coke as well - their tasting room is like Club Cool x 100.

After Club Cool, we were feeling a little sweet treat, so we went to Connections Eatery and split a Baumkuchen.

View attachment 767539

L was still sound asleep, so we headed back into World Showcase to take our time walking through the pavilions we had skipped over earlier in the day.

View attachment 767540

After a nearly two-hour nap, L awoke shortly after 5pm. I would normally have a cow if he napped that late, but it was going to be a late night for him, so it worked out well. We originally had a dinner reservation for Biergarten on this day, but we canceled it the day prior, because we thought it would be fun to snack around the world for dinner. We started with a giant pretzel in Germany. I forgot how dang big these things are. Unfortunately, L was 100% uninterested in eating it, so we decided we'd have to get him a kids' meal from somewhere else for dinner.

View attachment 767541

After J and I finished the pretzel, we headed over to Norway to ride Frozen using our LL. Hands up!

Up next: L's first Fireworks!

I don't know if you know this or not, when the Aquarium in Atlanta opened it replaced The Seas as the largest aquarium in the world. Since then a few others in Asia and one is Spain are bigger but Atlanta and The Seas I think are still in the top 10. Pretty amazing to think The Seas was the largest in the world for all those years, yet not something generally thought of when talking Walt Disney World.

Enjoying the report. 👍

That picture of L watching the fireworks 🥰
Some of our favorite pictures from the trip! He was loving it!
I have a feeling @fractal will have a field day in the Journey of Water area - cell phone pictures don't do it justice, especially at night!
Agreed! That's definitely a Disney worthy picture that could be used in their advertising and it would get tons of families to go 😅
Aww thank you! 🥰
This latest post was just so sweet. How wonderful that after the struggles, you are now able to enjoy all of these Disney firsts!! The fireworks photos are just the sweetest!
We are so thankful! ❤️

I did know that! The Georgia Aquarium opened my freshman year of high school, so 2005 I think? Which means that The Seas was the largest aquarium in the world for over twenty years! We (especially L) love both!

Saturday, December 2nd - Check-Out Day

L was up before 6am, so we let him lay in bed with us for a few minutes before we dragged ourselves out of bed to start getting ready to leave. J and I got ourselves ready, and then J loaded the luggage into the car while I got L ready and kept him entertained. We said our goodbyes to the room and the animals outside, and headed out around 7:35. We had an 8:25 breakfast reservation at Topolino's Terrace, and we arrived right around 8:00, and were seated almost immediately.

J and I ordered a French Press coffee, and while we were waiting for our coffee, we got our first visitor. L was still a little shy with the characters, but he enjoyed showing Daisy her picture on his placemat and on the postcard that they give out at the restaurant.

IMG_8292.jpeg

After Daisy had visited, the characters did their little song and dance, and took a break for a few minutes.

For our breakfast, J ordered the Steak and Eggs, I ordered the Sour Cream Waffle, and L ate off of both of our plates, as well as the pastry basket. They normally bring the pastry basket at the beginning of your meal, but our server had forgotten, and we got it after our food had come.

IMG_8298.jpeg

Shortly after our food arrived, we got a visit from the Big Cheese himself.

IMG_8303.jpeg

And then Minnie dropped by our table - L was smitten with her. 🥰

Saturday, December 2nd - Check-Out Day - Continued

By the time we had finished our meal and paid our check, we still had not seen Donald, but our server told us we could stay at the table until he had come to see us.

Somehow, we ended up seeing Daisy a second time...

IMG_8304.jpeg

And then the #1 Duck finally came to our table.

"Can you believe my parents are trying to make me go home today? Can I stay here with you?"

IMG_5794.jpeg

After we had seen Donald, we left Topolino's and used the restrooms before heading out to our car. We got gas at the Speedway station down the street, and we were pulling through the not-so-magical gates at 9:35 am.

IMG_8308.jpeg

It rained a good bit of the drive, and we passed a couple accidents, because people don't know how to drive in the rain. But by some miracle, even with the SEC Football Championship happening in Atlanta that day, we made it back home almost exactly 7 hours after leaving WDW.

A few weeks after getting home, we had Christmas...

And since then, we've been counting down the days until the next Disney trip . A few days after we got home, I booked our 2024 trip utilizing the Bounce Back offer that was in our room. I was really hoping to fit in another combination San Diego/Disneyland trip this Spring, but it looks like that is probably not going to happen. Maybe next year. 🤞 If you've read this far, thank you for following along! I will sum up our final thoughts on the trip in a separate post.

Love reading your TR, and getting to know that L loves donuts as much as I do🤣

Final Thoughts

- Crowds - We almost always go to WDW the week after Thanksgiving, and thus far, it has worked out really well for us crowd-wise. The holidays are a popular time, but the week after Thanksgiving seems to be that sweet spot where kids are still in school, and you can enjoy the holiday offerings without battling the insane crowds. HS and Epcot felt more crowded than the other two parks, but still manageable. I dread the day that we have to start going during Christmas break. :arghh:

- Resort - We liked Kidani Village, but I don't know that we'd stay there again anytime soon. I know some people prefer Kidani over Jambo because it's more secluded and quiet, but it almost felt a little too quiet for us. We saw very few families with young kids there, so anytime Lincoln made any kind of noise, we felt like we were disturbing everyone's peace. Maybe when Lincoln is a little older, we'll feel more comfortable staying there again, but for the time being, we'll probably stick to the Values and Moderates, where we don't feel guilty for our kid acting like a kid. We of course loved having a Savanna-view room and seeing the animals every day. Lincoln keeps asking to go back to our hotel, so we asked him recently what his favorite part of the hotel room was - for him, it was 1) the sliding glass door, and 2) the mini fridge. 🤷‍♀️

- Dining - For the most part, we had great food on this trip. The only two places we'll probably avoid in the near future are 1) Roundup Rodeo BBQ - because it's priced like a character meal, with no characters, and 2) 'Ohana - because the experience just isn't what it used to be, and it doesn't feel worth the money to us at this present time.

- Price - Disney is more expensive than ever. It doesn't mean we'll stop going anytime soon, but it's the main reason why we've cut back to one trip per year. I would not be surprised to see Disney offering more discounts in the near future, as we've recently seen them doing a Bounce Back offer for the first time in years, as well as a Free Dining offer. I think they see that Disney is becoming more and more unattainable for the average family, and while I don't think we'll see a decrease in ticket and dining prices anytime soon, I do think we'll see more discounts offered.

- Parenting - Lincoln was two and a half years old on this trip, and it was the best trip in some ways, and the hardest trip in others. He's at the age where he's really developing opinions, and it's fun to see him really enjoy his favorite things, and ask to do them again. He had a blast on this trip, and has asked to go back at least once a week since we've been home. Of course, the lack of sleep was an issue for all of us. It's physically exhausting spending all day in the parks, when you were up half the night with a toddler who normally sleeps 10-11 straight hours at home. We're really hoping he'll get better about sleeping on our next trip.

Overall, we had a really great trip. There were some stressful moments of course, but we all enjoyed our time, and made some great memories. We're looking forward to the next one - in 278 long days - and in the meantime, I'll be living vicariously through everyone else's trip reports!

Thank you all for reading!

Oh my goodness, I hate to see this end! It was very fun to experience this with you as L is getting older and enjoying the experience (hands in the air!). I appreciate the time you take to report your trips, and I'm looking forward to the next one (as well as updates on the Chit Chat thread)!

Thanks for the report!

I'm all in favor of some discounts as well.
Thanks for reading!
Thank you for this adorable report! Lincoln's little arms up and all your sweet memories. These little years are my favorite.
We’re not planning on any more kids, so we’re enjoying the little years while we can 💗
