Trip Report *COMPLETED* Once Upon a Christmas Time...A Very Merry Trip Report

Hello Everyone!

We just returned from yet another WDW visit this past weekend and with the holiday season quickly approaching I wanted to make sure I at least started our report before Christmas knowing that I would easily let this slip into January if I didn't.

Just to refresh your memory, this was the first trip we planned as DVC members having joined the club in March. Something we should have done years ago but better late than never, I guess! For those of you who may want to do some pre-reading, here is a link to the pre-trip report that started early this year and now seems so crazy to think the trip has already come and gone.

With that short preamble...let's start the show!

The Main Characters
My wife, Kelly, and I, along with our two Disney Princesses, Ella (7), and Lennon (5).

Here we are on our summer 2016 visit.

The Script
Once our DVC membership was completely finalized in March and we had access to the booking system we started thinking about our next visit. Kelly and I had spent Christmas in WDW way back in 2009 and we loved how the parks looked and felt decorated for the holidays. We figured this would be a great opportunity for us to head back around Christmas time and give the girls their first taste of a Disney Christmas.

Originally we booked accommodation for December 7-16 at our home resort, Saratoga Springs, and waited for the 7-month window to open to have access to other DVC options. Once the window hit we made our move. Our intention was to try and get the Grand Floridian knowing it would be next to impossible with a backup plan of either the Beach Club or Wilderness Lodge. Both BC and WL were available and we eventually decided on the BC because of the great Boardwalk location.

After we secured a one-bedroom villa at BC we decided to add another day to the trip because...well, why not! The 6th was not available at the time at BC so we ended up booking the additional night at AKL. I would periodically check back to see if the BC was open and one day, to my surprise, a one-bedroom lake view at the GF popped up. I quickly called the member line and made the switch from AKL to the Grand thinking this was likely the only chance we'd ever get to stay there so might as well take advantage.

Now we were all set and all that was left to do was wait out the remaining months and for once look forward to winter!

We planned and planned and planned as the days ticked by. Kelly and I escaped kid free to Denver in November to watch the GOAT, Tom Brady, crush the Broncos...something I have always wanted to do and finally was able to check it off the bucket list.

Once we returned it was all Disney, all the time as we were now less than a month away!

Matt, it looks like you and your family had a great trip! Your girls are so freaking adorable!

So....when's the next trip booked for?

We absolutely did have a great trip. The girls still talk of it often and are always on our case to go back. Doesn't look like we'll be heading back to WDW until next year. We already have plans in place for September 2019. We went a little crazy on this trip so we need some time to reset some of our DVC points!

That said, we have thrown around the idea of possibly heading back to Disneyland later this year. Nothing concrete at this point but we haven't been to Disneyland since the 60th Anniversary and we'd love to go back. Kelly and I are tossing around a 5-day trip in mid October but we shall see.

December 16 - Disney Springs and Heading Home

Ten days had flown by and when we woke up we were bummed out to knowing we would be heading to the airport later in the day to fly back home. Originally we had booked breakfast at Kona Cafe (my favourite breakfast spot) but a few nights prior we decided to cancel that reservation, eat in the room and head to Disney Springs instead.

We all woke up and started getting ready for the final day. The girls were eating while Kelly and I were making sure we were all packed up and ready. We folded the last of the laundry, packed out suitcases and made sure we had all of our necessities rounded up.

I was happy to enjoy the sights around the room/resort for one last morning.

And for whatever reason, I couldn't believe I had not noticed this hidden Mickey until just this morning

With everything packed up and breakfast pretty much done, I made the quick walk downstairs to the marketplace to grab a coffee. On my way back up to the room I spent a little time in the foyer of the Villas taking a couple pics of the Breezeway, a beautiful sitting area that led out to the pool.

When I returned to the room we were ready to call down to bell services to grab our luggage and hop on the bus to hit up Disney Springs for some last minute shopping. We had decided not to take the Magical Express back to the airport and opted to request a Lyft so we didn't have to be at the airport super early.

Bell services picked up our bags, we took once last look at the room and made our way to the bus stop to grab a ride to DS. Our timing was pretty solid as we essentially arrived right on. A short trip later and we started browsing some of the stores around the Springs. We didn't really spend a ton of time at DS this trip so we wanted to make sure we got back before we went home to at least grab a few souvenirs, check out some shops and hopefully have lunch before getting ready for the airport.

We made stops in a number of stores before stopping for a quick snack at Ghirardelli where Kelly and the girls got some ice cream. I was in more of a popcorn mood so that's what I ended up finding. We were all satisfied

We camped out close to these guys. Tons of great holiday displays around Disney Springs.

We continued on to World of Disney and the Days of Christmas. We had to bring back a Christmas ornament for our tree that was waiting for us at home. We decided on a big Rapunzel-like Mickey head that the girls really liked. It was wrapped up tight so it was ok for the flight home. Len was feeling festive knowing Santa would be coming soon.

We grabbed a few final things at World of Disney, including my coffee stash which has become a tradition for me on each Disney trip. I was saddened to see the old sample packs were no longer available but I do admit the French Vanilla coffee is fantastic. I really need to get more sometime soon.

We decided we'd try and grab some lunch before heading back as we were starting to get pressed for time before we had to head to the airport. Kelly and I really wanted Delux but as we were starting to notice, it was super busy all over Disney Springs and the line stretching well out the door and beyond the corner of the building left us out of luck for a tasty burger.

Instead we decided to head back to grab a quick lunch from the Beach Club marketplace and hail our Lyft. We ended up back at the hotel, grabbed something quick to eat and loaded up on snacks to pack to take home with us as we had quite a few credits left over.

Once we were done we picked up our luggage, called out Lyft and we were set to head back to the airport. It was so tough to say goodbye to the resort. I really enjoyed the stay and would love to come back on a future trip.

Our Lyft driver got us to the airport with plenty of time to spare, we checked in at the curb, which was super convenient, and made our way through the long security line.

After a smooth flight to Minneapolis, a relatively brief layover and another easy ride to Edmonton, we were home. To our surprise we landed to virtually no snow anywhere which is a complete rarity at this time of the year. With the way mother nature has been hitting us since the New Year, it looks like she was making up for the mild December. We have snow in the forecast for tomorrow...this winter can end anytime now. Thankfully I'll be jetting off to spend the weekend playing golf at Pebble Beach with my dad and brother this Friday.

Alas, we arrived home to find our trusty basset hound, Marty, waiting anxiously for us. Our first trip as DVC members was over in what seemed like the blink of an eye but as we look back now, we had a blast spending Christmas in Disney. So many great memories, tons of awesome pictures and more than our share of great food throughout.

I'd like to thank you all for reading along as I chronicled our Christmas adventure. Your comments, questions, well wishes, gentle ribbing over the Pats Super Bowl loss and everything in between have been so appreciated. You made writing this report that much more fun and I'm thankful that people seemed to be interested in how we spent our time.

While the trip may now be over I still plan on posting a few closing thoughts about the trip in it's entirety including my own review of the resorts, the dining plan and whatever else left an impression on me.

Thanks again and I look forward to sharing many more Disney memories with you in the years to come!

Loved your TR. I will be following along whenever you head back “home” again!

Thanks very much, LisaBelle! I really appreciate you following along. I sure hope we’re back ”home” sooner than later and fingers crossed it may provide us the opportunity to run into some of the great members on this board.

Can’t thank you enough for reading, John. I really enjoyed your input and the coincidental T1D discussions!

Loved your trip report, your girls are adorable! Hope you get to return to the World soon !

Thanks so much. I enjoyed writing and am beyond pleased people stuck with it and enjoyed reading. If all goes according to plan we will be back in 2019. With any luck my next pre-trip might begin in October when we're eligible to use our DVC points.

One of my favourite TR's so far!! Loved it!

Thanks very much! I really appreciate the kind words.

Very enjoyable read @Matty30. Still sorry our paths didn’t cross!

Thanks @Tuvalu! One of these trips we'll get lucky enough to bump into you. Hopefully next year!

Thanks for the great TR...it makes the waiting for my trip bearable.

Thanks for the great feedback. You're right about TR's acting as great ways to fill the void. I know we, especially Kelly, read a ton of them in between our visits just to get a little taste for what we're missing.

I always enjoy your trip reports, but especially really loved this one! Thanks for sharing all of your memories with us!

Thank you very much for the kind words. I love having the chance to share our experiences with people and with the girls getting a little older and little braver each trip, I'm hopeful the next report will be even more fun.

Happy Belated Anniversary!

Glad Lennon got over her fear of Ghosts (or is it fear of hitchhikers?)

great report and I know you're going to get the most of your DVC. A ton of great memories yet to come!

Thanks a lot for reading, Chris! We're pretty happy with or DVC membership so far...Can't believe we didn't do this earlier but happy to have it moving forward. Kelly is already talking about adding more points but I think we're still a few years away from doing that!

Len's fear definitely was centred around the hitchhikers but after that last ride all seems to be forgotten. She's already talking about seeing which ghost follows us home next trip.

I think you may need to get some help for that addition to Disney soap / shampoo / lotions... Admitting you have a problem IS the first step. :geek:

RIGHT?! It’s a problem. I know it but I just can’t help myself. I have so much stuff piled up from trips past and I try my best not to use it.

It makes no sense to have it just sit there and take up space but I keep adding to it.
