Trip Report COMPLETED- I Couldn't Love You, but Here's $0.25 in Souvenirs- Celebrating 10 Years of Kid Trips to Disney

We began our adventures early on the morning of February 5th. Just before 7am CT, we had my vehicle loaded up and ready to go. I’m not sure how we did it, but we managed some room for the dog so we could drop her off for boarding (aka Camp!) on our way out of town. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. She gets comfortable in the strangest positions...

I haven’t set foot in my office since March 16, 2020, so I have no idea what rush hour really looks like these days or if Fridays are still lighter traffic days...but it was a breeze getting out of Houston.

I have no pictures for you until shortly after Lafayette, LA. I was driving up until this point, but after a series of urgent texts from my boss, we decided to stop and switch drivers. I’m not a big fan of critical conference calls at the start of my vacation, but these days, I’m thankful to be gainfully employed. After I got off the phone, I took a few pics as we were driving through the Atchafalaya.

It’s probably for the best that I wasn’t taking pics prior to this. Everything around Lake Charles, not too far west of this area, is still showing a lot of damage and tarps from the 2020 hurricane season, so it's pretty depressing. I also hate driving over the Mississippi in Baton Rouge, so I was pretty happy to have David at the wheel.

Speaking of David (and everyone else), if you want all of the details, please take a look at my PTR. https://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/family-return-to-wdw-take-2.971452/

Now, if it looks rainy and gloomy...it’s because it was. We were at the leading edge of a front that was moving east. The rain stayed with us for a good portion of the drive.

50912470921_c0ff159fa3_z.jpg

In light of everything Covid, we didn’t stop at any of our usual lunch spots. I packed a small cooler full of lunch stuff and we stopped at the Mississippi welcome center to eat. Unfortunately, it was really chilly, so we ate in the car. That didn’t stop a ton of pigeons from surrounding us in hopes that we’d drop some crumbs on the way to the trash.

50912602042_17e37c003c_z.jpg

I was aiming for Tallahassee for the night. That’s usually where we wind up when we make good time, but we’d left so early that we were in Tallahassee by dinner time...even with losing an hour when crossing into the Eastern time zone. We didn't even have traffic with the tunnel in Mobile! Not sure why we decided on Whataburger when we have tons of them at home and this one was way off the highway, but we went a bit out of our way to eat at this one for who knows what reason. At least it had a nice little drive-in area to park and eat.

50915171003_17f6c94374_z.jpg

Somewhere in between Pensacola and Tallahassee, we also developed a bit of a car problem…

50915855166_9bd66c7dce_z.jpg

50931651393_818565f737_z.jpg

Somehow, my front sensor got blocked, which in turn disabled all of my front end safety features...as well as my cruise control. I’d had this happen once before, but it quickly corrected itself. This time, it wasn’t going away. The rest of the trip both to Disney and back would be done without cruise control. I felt like I’d jumped back in time to my first car!

We could have stopped for the night at this point. It was late enough that it wouldn’t have been crazy, but it was early enough that we felt the need to push on. So, I booked a hotel in Gainesville and we kept driving. I lived in Gainesville for several years in the early to mid 90s, so it always feels a bit strange to go back, but it was the best option for the night. It took a little bit of time to get all of our stuff upstairs, but by driving a bit farther this evening, we could all relax a bit and sleep in a little the next morning. And silly...we could be silly.

We slept in a little on February 6th. I think it was around 9am when we went downstairs to grab some breakfast to bring back to the room. It was mainly just some cereal, fruit and hard boiled eggs. We couldn’t sit around too long, because we remembered that I forgot to get cash. I couldn’t remember if the toll plazas had switched to toll by plate (they had) and I’d need some cash for tips upon arrival at WDW. So, we waved good-bye to the LaQuinta…

50931651398_b3907a04aa_z.jpg

And headed to Publix…

50932461472_8a43d76ef4_z.jpg

I didn’t spend a lot of time in there, but it was really strange, because this was the Publix we’d shop at when we lived in Gainesville. It just happened to be the closest to the hotel. It also was in the same shopping center as a restaurant I used to work at for a couple of years...so a real trip down memory lane.

With cash in hand (and an extra stick of deodorant purchased so I could get cash back), we were on our way to WDW. I also got some time to call and set up an appointment to get my vehicle in the shop when we got home (more on that later).

David was driving, so I was actually able to take a few pics on my phone when we arrived.

50915866811_0393bf4a09_z.jpg

This was also his choice of arrival music. I still don’t get it, but he’s got a pretty fun Idina Menzel impersonation. I regret not taking video, but I was taking pictures.

50915868921_699811458f_z.jpg

I’m sure most of us have experienced this, but between my phone, the MDE app, and our magic bands, they knew that we were on property. I immediately got notification that our room wasn’t ready, so I wasn’t expecting much upon arrival.

50932338506_547527319e_z.jpg

After getting a multitude of welcome homes from the security booth attendant (Kendall had all kinds of questions about this practice), a very nice guy with bell services helped with our luggage (who looked kind of funny at the big air mattress I had in the mix) and a woman, who magically knew it was me, told me she’d messaged housekeeping to put a rush on our room. So, all there was left to do at this point was park and figure out what to do with ourselves while we waited. Since I’d canceled our B&C ADR, we didn’t have any place to be until 5pm...and it was 11:48am. Hey, I told Disney we’d be showing up around noon.

Coming up...managing the wait, first impressions on our room, and an evening in Disney Springs.

I guess we got lucky, because I believe this is the S.E.A. room where we were seated. Come to think of it, our server was making jokes along these lines. Aaaaaaand I’m just getting them.

Menu time.

50936214098_ef95326c45_z.jpg

I think he’s just tired and not reacting to the menu.

50936213563_82b346c259_z.jpg

So, we were pretty excited to be seated in a cool spot.

We ordered drinks and I don’t think David understood that alcohol in MK was limited to what’s on the menu. He starts asking if their bartender can make this or that. Um...sir, no. I think he got a beer. The sangria didn’t appeal to me, so I got a fun non-alcoholic drink.

50936213283_429561b27a_z.jpg

Our server was really fun. I was so tired that I can’t remember much of any of it, but my parents swear she was their server on time before. This was our first time, so no frame of reference for us.

We ordered several appetizers. This first one with the cheese bread and the chimichurri was probably the best.

50936212988_d4e1c8f4d1_z.jpg

Some kind of skewers…which I didn’t get to try, but were supposedly very good.

50936212728_2017cfe077_z.jpg

I think this was the falafel, but I don’t remember if I had this one either.

50936212488_faacfd2939_z.jpg

The last starter we ordered was the cachapas. I was the only one who wanted this one.

50936212248_026b1faec1_z.jpg

I know others picked at it too, but it was mainly me. It was good, but I’ve made stuff like this at home too.

For our meals, Kendall got the fish. I regret not ordering this. I think I would have liked it better. She said it was great.

50937008462_7d1c09187e_z.jpg

Not in focus, but my mom got the pork. She loves this dish.

50936211828_5fd5051f2f_z.jpg

The rest of us got the tastes like chicken, because it is.

50936898106_89e12ea31e_z.jpg

It was OK, but not great either. I really wish they still had that mac & cheese dish on the menu.

The adults were good without dessert, but the kids wanted to try some things. I believe Kendall got the coconut bar.

50936897886_01b89bc986_z.jpg

I think Sam got the Kungaloosh.

50936897776_849a46e8b9_z.jpg

And naturally David had to mess with her while she was trying to eat.

And how am I just realizing that Sam brought a change of clothes??? It’s all coming back to me that she was worried about the long sleeved tee being hot, so she packed stuff in her backpack.

I had to get a closer look at this on the way out. I mean, it was right next to us. It’s not like we had to go far.

Time to head out…

50937006362_e23eaeebf8_z.jpg

MK was originally supposed to close at 6pm, and I’d originally had a 5:45pm ADR. I snagged a 6:20pm ADR before seeing that park hours had been shifted to 7pm. In hindsight, we probably should have stuck with the earlier one. Oh well, the park was closed by the time we got out.

50936896451_3e9380b4eb_z.jpg

So, time to start making our way to the exit.

I also had to stop for some castle pictures. At night, she looks glorious as ever!

It was only quarter to 8, but I swear, with everything shutting down early...it felt like it was midnight.

51006278038_427f8819cf_z.jpg

My dad’s pain levels were steadily increasing, but David and the kids needed to use the restroom on the way out. I told my mom to go up ahead of us and if worse came to worse we’d meet them on the benches in front of the TTC.

So, now I’m just here waiting on the rest of the family.

50937002822_2de4deebc0_z.jpg

50936206123_b3ed04a389_z.jpg

50936205988_6a2ed34a41_z.jpg

I guess my parents didn’t want to go all the way to the TTC without us, so they were waiting for us on the other side of the exit. Everyone...not just us...seemed confused and a bit frantic. There were still a lot of people exiting the park and I guess the monorail was down. They were offering busses as well as the ferry to the TTC. It became a pick your poison kind of moment and I felt bad for my dad because these are the kinds of things he dreads...end of the day mad rush to get out crowds...and then being in pain on top of it. This is why we rarely got to stay for fireworks when we were kids.

My gut said to pick the ferry. There was one that was loading, another that I could see on its way back to MK, they’re open air, and they can hold a lot of people. The line for the buses also didn’t look too good. So we joined a very large crowd of people that were heading to the ferry. I honestly think this is my first time riding the ferry. Either way, they had us all stand on dots to distance, but as soon as that ferry was ready to board, it was this awful crush of people to get on. No distancing and being in the middle of it, no way to really step aside and let them go either.

The bright spot in this...the Electrical Water Pageant was getting ready to start. The CM yelling directions seemed annoyed by it because, as he put it, none of us would be able to hear him once the music started. He does have a point. Still, without fireworks and such, this was kind of our kiss goodnight.

This was also some of the video I took before boarding the ferry.

When boarding, they asked that people in wheelchairs or with strollers be allowed the downstairs spots and for everyone else to go upstairs. There was no way my dad was making it up those stairs, so he and my mom stayed on the first level and the rest of us went up. They have dots for standing and areas where you can’t sit marked off. It wasn’t too bad around us, but there were a lot of people ignoring it...which I’m sure is pretty standard. Long day in the park means they want to all sit.

Once we had our spot, I started to take more video. I basically waited for the castle to go out of view to stop filming.

I took a few pics on our way into the dock.

I guess we’d be ‘home’ if we stuck with our plans to stay here.

This is where things take a turn. David had to go to the bathroom, which I don’t understand since he just went before leaving MK. I didn’t see my parents at first. I mean, I know they told people to let the bottom exit before the top, but people are stupid. So, I took a couple of pics as I waited...and as you can see, things are already pretty quiet.

50936999502_58db9f5886_z.jpg

50936889701_927cc18571_z.jpg

By the time my mom gets to us with my dad, he’s really not able to go any farther and there’s no way of him making it out to the car. David, now out of the restroom, finds some CMs who offer to let us borrow a wheelchair. I didn’t know this was a thing, but now I do, and I’m grateful for it. What’s crazy...back in 2014, I took this picture of a bunch of wheelchairs left in the Epcot lot and didn’t know why. Apparently, these are all of the chairs from all of the people requiring unexpected extra assistance in getting back to their vehicles. I guess they go through at some point during the day and round them up for the next evening.

15676615039_c74dbb1d2e_z.jpg

David wheeled my dad back to the car, left the chair in the lot as instructed, and we drove back to Boardwalk. I dropped everyone off at the front, parked the car, and then made my way inside.

50936202728_a504bfaa4c_z.jpg

At this point, I had all kinds of concerns...like would my parents be able to drive home. We already discussed it and they would not be joining us in our adventures the next day. In light of that, breakfast at Ale & Compass and lunch at Yak & Yeti got canceled. Then it was time to pack, since the next day was also checkout day. Odd to not have anything hanging on the door. I know it’s all digital now, but it felt strange to have no sadness hanging from the door to greet us when we got back from MK.

As for my chaffing, when we got back to the room, it became evident that it was no longer just angry and irritated. It was actively bleeding. Not horribly, but it was great either.

As for my father, he was able to get into an orthopedist after the trip. Apparently his other doctor was wrong and it’s looking like he’s going to require hip replacement surgery. Obviously, going on the rides he did weren’t the cause of this, but I wish he’d not listened to that one CM and taken the ECV with him to MK and I wish he’d gotten the DAS pass so he didn’t have to be standing so much in lines to further aggravate it, but these were also his choices.

Coming up...one last bit of Disney before heading home.

We were headed to AK, which was opening at 8am, so we couldn’t exactly linger at the resort. The girls went down and got us a luggage cart, we loaded it up, did one final sweep for K’s headphones (still MIA) and we headed out…

My parents were waiting for us in the lobby. My dad insisted he was feeling well enough to drive home, so I took his word for it. We said our first round of goodbyes and then I went down to get the car.

We drove up to the front of BW, loaded up the vehicle, said our official good-byes and were off to AK.

Naturally, I had to take a picture of where we parked.

I just wasn’t sure how I felt about being parked in UNICORN P, but I guess it’s all good if it’s magical.

As much as I wanted to get my $s worth, I was dragging. So, I just let everyone go on ahead of me, since they wanted to try and ride FoP and I didn’t.

I don’t know what it is, but it always feels really fitting to me to end with AK. It’s often our last park of the trip...park.

I hadn’t planned on going solo, so it took me a bit to figure out what I even wanted to do. So, I just wandered a bit and checked out some animals.

After I got out, I got some texts from David and the kids that they were over at Everest. I would have liked to ride, but with my chaffing, I couldn’t handle the idea of walking back there. So, I asked them if they’d meet me at the safari after their next ride. So, I just kept walking- slowly.

(I had no idea until now that this thing makes noises!)

Now, I told David where I was and even took some pictures to better illustrate my location…

50936400463_eccd70e8f1_z.jpg

I did have something interesting happen while I waited. I heard a familiar voice. I’m not sure how many follow AllEars and watch some of the Molly videos, but I swore I heard Molly’s voice. I looked up and saw a blonde girl talking into a phone on a gimbal or monopod, but in a mask, it’s hard to tell if it’s her. I did recall her having on rose gold ears and a rose gold backpack, so if it was her, I might be able to tie it to a video. It took a couple of weeks, but it definitely was her…

Right after she passed by, I got a where the heck are you text. Turns out my pictures didn’t help.

50936973397_c7d3a01705_z.jpg

I don’t recall the wait being too bad...maybe 15 minutes at most. So, we hopped into the line. While we were in line, I also learned that they never got to ride FoP. The line was listed at 45 minutes, but shortly after they got into the line, it jumped to over 60. So they just rode Everest several times in a row before meeting me.

I kind of feel like I wound up on the cruddy side of the vehicle, but I managed to get some things...like this guy’s pathetic attempt to hide. You can’t see it if it’s behind a tree...right?

50936972522_c707787181_z.jpg

So, I just got what I could.

50936861536_331567d68f_z.jpg

We also had an “interesting” safari driver. He was kind of annoyed that everyone ahead of him kept stopping. I lost count of how many times he asked over the PA...why are we stopping???

I will say that it was kind of strange having a 24mm lens for a safari. Most of my shots are like this.

50936970532_8492ec05e9_z.jpg

But it did prove my theory that cropping with a lens like this may be more effective than the alternatives. These guys were teeny tiny in the corner of one of my pics. It’s not super sharp, but still decent for how much of the pic I cut out to get to them.

50936860786_319f4864b0_z.jpg

I may crop as I go, since far away animals aren’t fun. Hence, why I bought a telephoto and extender gear.

See, I’m on the wrong side!

50936969897_a7a340c807_z.jpg

And now we’ve got more far away animals.

50936172928_fc98951941_z.jpg

Yes, I cropped this. Nothing wants to be near me! LOL

It may seem crazy, but sticking to this one lens and seeing how cropping worked is a great test for how things might work in the wild with stuff like bison and pronghorn.

50936856866_fe25e6b0d7_z.jpg

Here’s where it gets cool and why I’m still bitter about being on this side of the truck. The lions are my favorite, and if you watched that AllEars video above, Molly gets the male lion roaring. Unless we were in the same truck, she was in front of us and I didn’t see her, I’m guessing she was right ahead of us. She had gone in right before I saw David and we joined the queue. I’m on the opposite side, but these were the best stills I could get of him being super vocal.

50936169553_74f792eb30_z.jpg

Just so you get an idea of what the pics are like before cropping…

50936168823_89de66c430_z.jpg

Unfortunately, with my angle and our movement, it just kept wanting to focus on the truck top and not the animal. At least these distant rhinos were a better story.

50936168713_10ed36a3cf_z.jpg

At the end of our safari, there must have been a delay with the truck ahead of us, because we waited for several minutes to move. We watched several trucks pull up along side of us and unload guests, while we just sat.

50936168378_42c820db8e_z.jpg

Decisions now needed to be made on what to do with our morning, since the plan was to drive home today. We started walking…

They had thought about going back to Pandora and riding NRJ. Unfortunately, the wait was up to 40-45 minutes and they weren’t willing to wait. I think Dinosaur and Everest were on the table. I believe Everest --- again ---- won (or did it?). I chose to do my own thing and started walking back to the front of the park.

Coming up...what to do on my own, the other part of the title, and heading home.

Whew- this should be the second to last post of official TR stuff. I was going to wait, but with everything going on, it’s probably better if I post now.

Part of me feels like I took forever and part of me feels like I flew through this. It’s been over a month since we got back, so definitely one of my slower moving reports. I just have the tendency to rush it. It’s like I enjoy rehashing the trip, but at some point, I want to just start thinking about the future. And with all of my car and kid stuff going on, I probably need to focus.

LOL OK...on with the report...

I need to get out of this area because I just wasn’t in the mood for obnoxious people. This girl in some dressy outfit comes up next to me, removes her mask, and starts posing for someone holding a camera and taking her picture. The Photopass CM at the tree was yelling for her to put her mask back on, but she did it in this ridiculously slow way...making all of these little seductive pouty face looks while doing these America’s Next Top Model kind of poses as she’s putting it back on. I may or may not have called her something as I walked off.

I know it’s not just CMs and Disney dealing with this stuff, but I couldn’t take too many more Scar “I’m surrounded by idiots” kind of moments. And like the stores here, I’m sure they only go so far with non-compliance because they don’t want all out brawls. Still frustrating.

This is when I decided to do a little shopping.

50936166328_a924271190_z.jpg

I went into this trip with some Disney Visa rewards card earnings and I hadn’t spent them. We weren’t having any more meals in the parks or on property and there was nothing I just had to have for me. So, I thought back to the stuff the girls liked that day we were browsing at AOA and got a couple of goodies. Check out the receipt!

50937198372_66a6ebe654_z.jpg

The amount due after my rewards balance was a whopping $0.25!

I was on a shopping high, but I needed to stop while I was ahead. So, I went outside, sat down, took a few pics (some were texted to David so they could find me) and I just people watched.

Yeah, these were also a cropping details test.

Heavily cropped here too, but I saw these birds flying overhead and it made me sad to not see the macaws flying over AK. Guessing these are grackles or some kind of crows.

Unfortunately, with the awful waddle I was doing from the chaffing, I couldn’t get over there in time to really appreciate them.

I did take one last little video of the sights and sounds of AK.

David and the kids found me this time without any issues. I told the girls they’d have to wait until we were in the car to get their goodies. I was probably only about 9:45am at this point though and we were done. I know that sounds crazy, but we were just done. Theme park fatigue was in full force, we had no room to back to rest and today was our departure day anyway, so we started to head out of the park.

Once in the car, the girls opened the bag and found the following goodies (not my pictures)...

For Sam
50933690603_e501299c38_z.jpg

For Kendall
50934500897_b1cfe9a21e_z.jpg

50934378686_e41502a0d2_z.jpg

I was worried about Kendall’s because I wasn’t sure if I got something she liked. She quickly jumped in and said “Good, it’s the one I wanted.” So, that’s good. Sam, on the other hand, felt guilty. It was what she wanted, but she remembered how much it cost. I explained to her about my rewards dollars and that I only spent $0.25...and then joked that I couldn’t love her, that’s why she only got $0.25 in souvenirs. Then David chimed in that it may be even worse, since that’s $0.25 spent between her and Kendall.

Even with a bathroom break and the long walk to the car, I think we were off of Disney property by 10:15am. Things seemed to be going well for a while. We stopped north of Gainesville so I could get gas and we could switch drivers. I snapped this pic of my pollen covered hood. My vehicle was looking so gross, and to think I cleaned it inside and out before the trip.

50933289611_2bf88d5ef6_z.jpg

Unfortunately, or fortunately...depending on how you want to see it, it became very clear that my vehicle’s a/c had gone out. It wouldn’t be a big deal for most of the trip, but it was still mid to upper 80s in FL and we were a bit warm with no a/c. This also marks the 4th time in less than a year that the a/c has gone out. The dealer’s service department can’t figure it out, so I’m now trying to lemon law it. I bought it on March 14th last year. I really wasn’t expecting to be in this place at this time this year. At least the heat helped me take a nap. I was having a hard time keeping my eyes open, so I needed the break.

We stopped in Tallahassee for lunch in the car. David got all cranky because it sounded like I wasn’t ready to order. I gave him the number off of the Wendy’s menu...which corresponded to a burger...and the woman kept asking regular or spicy. Turns out she had the numbers all wrong and I wound up with a chicken sandwich. We also got turned around in Pensacola when trying to get gas, which made life interesting...wound up at a BBQ gas station place, but the pumps stopped working and it started pouring. So, I’m hunting around for gas without going too far. Good times!

I’m not sure if you guys remember that big pile up on TX I-35 that killed a number of people, but we’d be driving into the storm front that brought the icy conditions to the north to cause it. Weather got really ugly as we started to approach Mobile. At least we were making good time. As you can see, we still had daylight when we got into Louisiana.

50933690858_94d865339e_z.jpg

We made it to Baton Rouge around dinner and had Cane’s. I also spotted this Waffle House during our meal that felt like a nod to Disney’s Wall-E.

50934378806_8e15a3411e_z.jpg

Yeah, we like to play count the Waffle Houses. Hey, we had to keep it fun because the weather through much of Louisiana was awful. It was constant blinding rain and lots of lightning.

I want to say it was around 11pm central time when we got home...and boy were we in for a rude awakening. Nothing really bad, but considering it was in the 80s when we left FL, our bodies weren’t ready for the mid 30s we had when we got home. I was in shorts and a tank top! The house was like 55 degrees inside. Of course, it would be getting much colder by the end of the weekend, but that’s a big weather change.

Before I totally wrap this up, I wanted to share some of the Photopass pics that I’m not buying. LOL If we weren’t in masks, I probably would buy that Splash pic. Oh well. I also can’t remember when Kendall rode Haunted Mansion on her own. Bizarre!

There were a few more, but they were downright awful. I guess at least these confirm that David and the kids did in fact ride Dinosaur before we left AK. It also gave me a few little snippets of the time the girls spent on their own and when David and Sam went off together. I might have to remember this down the road when it comes to Memory Maker decisions.

Coming up...some final thoughts...because you know I have stuff to say :D

First off - more selfies please!! - you take wonderful pictures but are rarely in them yourself! - the "invention" of the selfie and group selfie have allowed me to get into more pictures in the parks and at the resorts with my family. Please consider upping your selfie percentage so we can see more of you!!!

I get this - and have felt it myself. It is a feeling that can stay with you and spoil the overall feel of a trip.
Kudos to you for recognizing it and getting out quickly - not trying to force it.

Having never lived close enough / having enough $$ and time this type of feeling has always been my "go to" rationalization for not buying Annual Passes.

I understand that living close and going 1 day a week is different experience but the idea of Theme Park fatigue has always been in the back of my mind and I would not want it to become a permanent thing!

Thank you :) I am bad about people pics in general! It's kind of funny, but I usually come home with thousands of pictures, but in the end, I may only have a few hundred with people. I'm the worst about me pics because that means shifting from camera to phone. I think I took more last January, simply because I didn't have the big camera along for the journey.

I think that's how my parents feel. They live close enough to justify APs, and there's no major guilt if they leave a park early. We've at least gone enough times over the last 36+ years that I don't feel like I'm missing out if we skip out on the rest of a park day. I think it's just the FOMO when there's something new.

Now it’s time for Deep Thoughts with HouCuseChickie! Kidding.

We had a nice trip, it was great to see family, and past issues like ride breakdowns and really bad food/service weren’t an issue this time. I also know Disney is trying really hard with all of the Covid policies and it’s just tough with the number of idiots out there. That being said, I can’t see us doing any more theme park trips until things are much more normal.

Towards the end of Spaceship Earth, we’re given the option to choose based on the destination or the journey. I realized on Test Track that we need the journey (the build your vehicle part in the queue) to make the destination (the actual ride) fun. Conversely, while I appreciated getting to see all of the little details in Big Thunder’s queue during our “journey” that we never see when we have FPs, this one is really about the destination (i.e. the ride) for me. While not all of the Covid measures fit this journey vs. destination concept, you are sort of forced to look at these changes and decide what previously made the Disney experience for you. It also means we’re going to have to look closely at what Disney does with FastPasses in the future. Our waits weren’t awful, but it’s tough to wait a while for something when you previously could have worked the whole fast pass system to your advantage and breezed right in. I also know we were there at a slower time and waits the following week were more unbearable. As much as we get nostalgic about the old school days of the parks, going back to lines for everything and no fastpasses was not a part of my Disney past I wanted to revisit. I’m just thankful that the lines weren’t as bad as what my parents have had on their March trip or what my brother experienced around New Year’s.

As much as I enjoyed the cavalcades and loved not having to stake out a parade spot, I missed all of the pageantry of a big parade. And unfortunately, nothing takes the place of fireworks. David and the kids aren’t huge on seeing them, but you miss it when they’re gone. And while I’m not big on M&Gs, I did miss seeing my kids hugging characters, especially their favorites.

Resort choice is also a biggie. This was my first time in any kind of villa at WDW. My parents have friends who are DVC and they do this all the time and had all kinds of input going in. Still, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel. Obviously, I had those issues I pointed out with the room, but in general...we liked staying at BW and the room was pretty nice. We really didn’t use the kitchen a ton, but it was nice to have a full fridge for soda and water bottle storage all trip, it was nice to have plates and utensils for cake night, it was a good lesson for K in coffee making, and there was that morning when I toasted a bagel. Speaking of plates...the night I served the cake, I got to the 5th and 6th plates in the stack and they were DIRTY! It looked like old cheese. People were already eating from the first four plates, so I just put the dirty ones in the dishwasher, got out two more and washed them before serving. Here’s the biggest thing...I don’t know if the room was large enough! Not having two toilets in a room that size is kind of a bummer and with the snoring and sleeping arrangements, we probably would have been more comfortable in a 2 bedroom. It’s no secret that we like to spread out and I get claustrophobic. We stayed at POR back in 2016 and I was going nuts by the third day because I felt so cramped. Maybe we’ll skip the kitchen next time and just try for adjoining rooms vs. a villa. Doing that at CBR was on the table this time because the price point and Skyliner access. That may be what we do next time… since two toilets and showers are more important that the kitchen. Who knows...if the perks for onsite keep diminishing, we may look to a house rental. We’d lose onsite convenience, but I know we can get a lot more for the money with that.

We don’t have any plans to return in the near future. If I can get this insane car stuff worked out before the summer, we’re supposed to do another big National Parks trip...so still crazy tourists doing dumb things, but it’s more along the lines of idiots wanting to pet the bison vs. people doing dumb stuff at Disney. When we do go back to a theme park vacation, the kids want Universal to be their next big theme park trip...and who knows when that will be. Maybe next year? Still, it’s not good-bye, it’s just See Ya Real Soon! Since I’m sure even a Universal trip will involve a pop-in to Disney to see a few things.

And since this was a 10 year celebration of kid trips to Disney...I’ll leave you with a “few” (in other words, I’ll try and narrow it down to 20) more of our favorites over the last decade.

I could do this for days (actually miscounted and initially had 25 in here), but I’ve tortured you all with enough pictures.

Speaking of pictures, as you could probably tell, this trip helped me make some big lens decisions. I was initially considering something with a 150mm-600mm range or an 18mm-400mm with the possibility of adding a teleconverter. It sounds great, but…
  1. Why have a DSLR if you’re going to use just one lens?
  2. If I lose sharpness at the 250mm range with my 55mm-250mm lens, would this softness be even more significant with a big lens like the ones previously described?
I read a lot of reviews with side by side lens comparisons as well as watched a number of videos. At the end of the day, I saw a number of complaints about the long-range telephotos I was considering. I also saw a pro-photographer, who went through three of the 150-600s to get a good one, and was still disappointed. She compared the pictures on the camera at the 600mm range and compared them to photos taken on her prime 300mm that had been cropped. The cropped ones from the 300mm prime were noticeably sharper than the super telephoto with the 600mm capabilities and the color was better (same settings/lighting). I’ve also seen that buying prime lenses is lower risk than zooms since there’s less chance of dust being trapped.

So, I got a used version of this.

I had thought really seriously about the one below, since it is a 400mm, but I tend to shoot handheld and without IS, I think the 300 is the better one for me.

I also bought a used version of an earlier model of this. For whatever reason, versions I and III get the best reviews. I know version III is probably superior, but it’s a lot of $ for something I’m not sure I’ll like using. They make a 2.0x model as well, but all of the 1.4x incarnations seem to get much better reviews.

The safari is the closest test I had at Disney to see how things would go with cropping images taken on a fixed distance lens. I was closer, in a lot of cases, than I’d be in the wild, but I also wouldn’t have a 24mm lens out in the wild if I’m trying to photograph wild animals at a safer distance. Now to get the camera body into the shop. I got a bunch of dust in there during a softball tournament. It’s not showing up in pics, but it’s driving me NUTS!

OK, most of you have probably tuned out with the lens talk, so I’ll stop. Thanks for following along!!! Hopefully, I’ll have some summer trip report stuff in the Chit Chat! If we are able to go through with that trip, highlights will include Theodore Roosevelt NP, Glacier NP, Yellowstone NP, Shoshone Falls, Bryce Canyon NP, Zion NP, Monument Valley, White Sands NP and Carlsbad Caverns NP...and a TON of driving.
