Trip Report COMPLETED- I Couldn't Love You, but Here's $0.25 in Souvenirs- Celebrating 10 Years of Kid Trips to Disney

We began our adventures early on the morning of February 5th. Just before 7am CT, we had my vehicle loaded up and ready to go. I’m not sure how we did it, but we managed some room for the dog so we could drop her off for boarding (aka Camp!) on our way out of town. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. She gets comfortable in the strangest positions...

I haven’t set foot in my office since March 16, 2020, so I have no idea what rush hour really looks like these days or if Fridays are still lighter traffic days...but it was a breeze getting out of Houston.

I have no pictures for you until shortly after Lafayette, LA. I was driving up until this point, but after a series of urgent texts from my boss, we decided to stop and switch drivers. I’m not a big fan of critical conference calls at the start of my vacation, but these days, I’m thankful to be gainfully employed. After I got off the phone, I took a few pics as we were driving through the Atchafalaya.

It’s probably for the best that I wasn’t taking pics prior to this. Everything around Lake Charles, not too far west of this area, is still showing a lot of damage and tarps from the 2020 hurricane season, so it's pretty depressing. I also hate driving over the Mississippi in Baton Rouge, so I was pretty happy to have David at the wheel.

Speaking of David (and everyone else), if you want all of the details, please take a look at my PTR. https://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/family-return-to-wdw-take-2.971452/

Now, if it looks rainy and gloomy...it’s because it was. We were at the leading edge of a front that was moving east. The rain stayed with us for a good portion of the drive.

50912470921_c0ff159fa3_z.jpg

In light of everything Covid, we didn’t stop at any of our usual lunch spots. I packed a small cooler full of lunch stuff and we stopped at the Mississippi welcome center to eat. Unfortunately, it was really chilly, so we ate in the car. That didn’t stop a ton of pigeons from surrounding us in hopes that we’d drop some crumbs on the way to the trash.

50912602042_17e37c003c_z.jpg

I was aiming for Tallahassee for the night. That’s usually where we wind up when we make good time, but we’d left so early that we were in Tallahassee by dinner time...even with losing an hour when crossing into the Eastern time zone. We didn't even have traffic with the tunnel in Mobile! Not sure why we decided on Whataburger when we have tons of them at home and this one was way off the highway, but we went a bit out of our way to eat at this one for who knows what reason. At least it had a nice little drive-in area to park and eat.

50915171003_17f6c94374_z.jpg

Somewhere in between Pensacola and Tallahassee, we also developed a bit of a car problem…

50915855166_9bd66c7dce_z.jpg

50931651393_818565f737_z.jpg

Somehow, my front sensor got blocked, which in turn disabled all of my front end safety features...as well as my cruise control. I’d had this happen once before, but it quickly corrected itself. This time, it wasn’t going away. The rest of the trip both to Disney and back would be done without cruise control. I felt like I’d jumped back in time to my first car!

We could have stopped for the night at this point. It was late enough that it wouldn’t have been crazy, but it was early enough that we felt the need to push on. So, I booked a hotel in Gainesville and we kept driving. I lived in Gainesville for several years in the early to mid 90s, so it always feels a bit strange to go back, but it was the best option for the night. It took a little bit of time to get all of our stuff upstairs, but by driving a bit farther this evening, we could all relax a bit and sleep in a little the next morning. And silly...we could be silly.

We slept in a little on February 6th. I think it was around 9am when we went downstairs to grab some breakfast to bring back to the room. It was mainly just some cereal, fruit and hard boiled eggs. We couldn’t sit around too long, because we remembered that I forgot to get cash. I couldn’t remember if the toll plazas had switched to toll by plate (they had) and I’d need some cash for tips upon arrival at WDW. So, we waved good-bye to the LaQuinta…

50931651398_b3907a04aa_z.jpg

And headed to Publix…

50932461472_8a43d76ef4_z.jpg

I didn’t spend a lot of time in there, but it was really strange, because this was the Publix we’d shop at when we lived in Gainesville. It just happened to be the closest to the hotel. It also was in the same shopping center as a restaurant I used to work at for a couple of years...so a real trip down memory lane.

With cash in hand (and an extra stick of deodorant purchased so I could get cash back), we were on our way to WDW. I also got some time to call and set up an appointment to get my vehicle in the shop when we got home (more on that later).

David was driving, so I was actually able to take a few pics on my phone when we arrived.

50915866811_0393bf4a09_z.jpg

This was also his choice of arrival music. I still don’t get it, but he’s got a pretty fun Idina Menzel impersonation. I regret not taking video, but I was taking pictures.

50915996637_5dd07eab22_z.jpg

50915868921_699811458f_z.jpg

I’m sure most of us have experienced this, but between my phone, the MDE app, and our magic bands, they knew that we were on property. I immediately got notification that our room wasn’t ready, so I wasn’t expecting much upon arrival.

50932338506_547527319e_z.jpg

After getting a multitude of welcome homes from the security booth attendant (Kendall had all kinds of questions about this practice), a very nice guy with bell services helped with our luggage (who looked kind of funny at the big air mattress I had in the mix) and a woman, who magically knew it was me, told me she’d messaged housekeeping to put a rush on our room. So, all there was left to do at this point was park and figure out what to do with ourselves while we waited. Since I’d canceled our B&C ADR, we didn’t have any place to be until 5pm...and it was 11:48am. Hey, I told Disney we’d be showing up around noon.

Coming up...managing the wait, first impressions on our room, and an evening in Disney Springs.

OK, back on track for TR stuff...

I have a feeling David and Sam would have toughed it out with us if Small World had a shorter line, but I think it was in the 35-45 minute range. So, they went on their merry way and Kendall and I walked to the happiest cruise that ever sailed.

50936147283_a2b1e1694b_z.jpg

What a day...Donald...the castle (even if I still wasn’t sure about the paint job)...and now this lovely sight!

50936146583_4e26d66246_z.jpg

We spent a while outside in line...so I took some Fantasyland pics while we waited.

50936146808_3a2b0d4651_z.jpg

OK...really just one. I was getting warm, I was still wet and uncomfortable, and the line was getting on my nerves a bit. The family in front of us had a little girl...I’d put her around 18 months...and she was into everything. She was absolutely adorable and they really were trying their best to keep up with her and keep her entertained, but she was all over the place and a bit of a runner. It meant having the line ahead of us moving a bit slower and often having to stay back in our spot a bit longer if she went to bolt in our direction. I was just not in the mood, but I kept telling myself...you’re just cranky because of your pants and you were once their position...so just deal. I mean, it is Disney...it is the Magic Kingdom...this is an attraction with no height restriction...so I guess I just zoned out until I had more in the queue to photograph. Like now…

I was going through “Must Do’s” withdrawals and was driving Kendall nuts. I kept saying Stacey’s line, “It’s a Small World...Cuh-Lassic!” She told me I wasn’t funny. Not sure I was trying to be!

We boarded the boat a few rows behind the family with the little girl and waved to everyone as we embarked on our journey.

50936832151_fd3572578b_z.jpg

Nobody waved back.Oh well, their loss...and I was cruisin’! Kendall was mortified...like why are you waving mom? Hey, the CM above us waved...I’m waving. I’m having fun. DEAL.

Oh, and if you haven’t seen one of my past Disney TRs, I take a ton of pics in here. It may seem shocking...but this isn’t even all of them! This is my favorite. Hence, the love for my magic band...even though it’s pink! Sorry...not a pink fan. OK...still cruising. Oh...and if you hate this ride like the family that abandoned us...keep scrolling until you no longer see dolls. If not, I encourage you to sing along. I’m sure you know the words.

I got cranky at the end because our names never came up on the screens. So, I just kind of gave up on taking pics for a bit. I was also wanting to hop out of our boat before that family since I knew we’d be moving faster. The little girl seemed to really enjoy the ride, so that was good.

Well, I hope it feels a bit like I took you along for the ride, without the use of video. I will say this...while not everything was perfect, I was really pleased with how the little 24mm lens did on this ride. This helped a ton with my decision for a big telephoto.

I also came really close to posting this, but I have a number of friends who are vacation shamers. So, I decided to just keep it to myself.

OK, I just subjected you guys to more IASW than is probably necessary, so I’ll take a break right here.

After we left IASW, I checked on David and Sam and they were over at Space Mountain.

50930426897_10ff1ff137_z.jpg

That too was on my list of things to ride, but we weren’t exactly going to be meeting them for this one, so Kendall and I decided to head to one of her favorites.

50936120938_ce6a25938e_z.jpg

Along the way, she asked why we weren’t eating at BOG. Ummmm...we decided last time we weren’t all that into the food and had experienced the environment enough times not to spend the $?

50936120708_d1c0b0c014_z.jpg

Well, this is where we were headed.

50936808446_f403babaa5_z.jpg

I think it was showing a 15 minute wait, but it’s not like we had anywhere to be for some time. Soooo, we entered the queue.

I was worried with all of the Covid changes that the little crabs would be turned off, but I saw a few and got one to work. I just couldn’t hang around to do more because with distancing, I can’t exactly wave people on ahead of us.

Really hoping we make this summer road trip work and everyone isn’t ready to head home so we can see the inspirations at Bryce in person.

It’s been many years, but, I’ve visited Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon, Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, and Petrified Forest, among many other places out west, as we lived in No Cal from ‘68-‘76.
All worth a visit, and you’ll definitely appreciate the Bryce inspiration for BTMR...!!! :)

We've been to the Grand Canyon, but on our last big national parks trip that brought us out west, the farthest we got into Utah involved Arches and Canyonlands. The kids tend to prefer the parks with wildlife, but I like it all, so I'm hoping we're not ready to head home by the time we get to the first "keep going or drive home" point in the trip we have planned for this summer.

I took some pics from the air back in 2015, when we were flying to CA. I know it's not the Grand Canyon, because I know what that looks like from the air, but we could never determine if this was Sedona, Bryce, or some other area with this kind of rockwork.

Either way, we have some great "red rock" jokes we like to use to annoy the kids when we go places like this, so I'm hoping we get there this summer.

Yep, definitely not Grand Canyon from those pics, and probably not Bryce, as those pics look closer to Zion, or Sedona, as you mentioned...!!! :)

Wow! Both are beautiful! That trail in the Zion pic gives some really good perspective on just how small we all are compared to these amazing natural wonders.

Normally, I try to take stills during the launch, but I decided to try video. With the way this one bumps you around, I didn’t want to use my phone, so I tried with the DSLR. It took a bit for the lens to focus, but you get the idea.

As you probably would imagine, this was not the best thing for my back, yet it didn’t bother me as much as some of the other rides...which was surprising.

When we exited, we saw that Stitch had come out to say Hi!

50936786886_4dafba8534_z.jpg

I pointed it out to David, since Stitch is his fave, but he was playing some video game on his phone and was like Huh? What? Oh well...time to move on. I got a text from my dad that they’d taken a bus to MK so it was time to walk towards the hub to meet up.

Sorry...I was playing with settings a little bit to get the colors the way it looked to my eyes. So, that third one is how it really looked to me. I’m sorry...if you love it, you’re not wrong, and we’re all entitled to our opinions. I, on the other hand, hate it. I think it’s downright hideous. I mean, really, what was so wrong with this???

15800639416_bb06fb8789_z.jpg

The current paint job reminds me of a child’s toy. And maybe that’s the point, but it just lost its majestic look to me.

We moved on into Adventureland, because I guess that’s where my parents wanted to meet up.

Great...I was dry and now I’m going to get wet again!

At some point, early in our wait, I started to get all of these texts from my team at work about systems being down. I replied with the following pictures that I’m not having these issues.

I got a few “don’t rub it in” kind of replies, but I still wonder if…
  1. Any of them even knew which park we were in.
  2. Any of them knew which ride we were waiting to ride.

I mean, these are important things, right? And unless you’re more well versed on your Disney stuff, you really might not know where this is.

Oh well, we had a long wait in the queue, so I just tried to take in details.

Finally inside!!!

I think it was 86 the previous day and 87 degrees this day. So, not surface of the sun hot by any means, but it was a bit warm to be standing out in the sun in a line, while wearing pants, for any period too long.

And this is where Sam almost lost her phone to the pirates. She’s trying to stick it in between the bars to get detail pics of what’s behind those bars. I appreciate her wanting to capture memories of the smaller details, but kid...don’t do something that could make you lose your phone!

50936892602_1856e82788_z.jpg

She already temporarily lost her phone last year in a most unusual way. It got stuck between the tailgate and bumper of David’s truck and went about 45 miles without falling out. The bed blocked the GPS for about 16 hours. When it started pinging the next morning, it was showing in the driveway. Neither of us could see it and when I called it, the vibration came from one of the back wheelbases. It’s so bizarre. So yeah...she can’t do things like that with her phone. We think her pop socket saved it from falling to its death on the freeway, but the bars in PotC would probably not be so kind.

As we got closer to the front, I looked up and realized I never noticed the thatched roof in this part before.

I think everyone was growing weary of the line ride.

50936781001_b7d8353b2d_z.jpg

We wound up being diverted to the line on the other side, which was met with a chorus of groans. My dad noted this is probably the longest we’ve waited for this ride since 1985! I believe the wait was over an hour by the time we were in the line.

Not really a fun part of the trip, but all of my FL toll bills finally came in the mail. Just under $15 in tolls. YAY...said nobody!

Lots of drama going on at home with soooooooooooo many things, but trying to keep things upbeat with TR stuff. So, back to our MK day.

We had talked about going to the Jungle Cruise on our way over the Pirates, because the wait didn’t seem that bad, but for whatever reason...PotC was the first priority. So, now we’re going to head back and cruise.

We’ll just call these more things you don’t normally see because you’re never waiting this far back in a line.

The sign says 35, but a CM said it was more like 25-30.

At some point during our wait, we hear a CM start yelling over the PA system. It did not sound like your typical JC jokes. She was yelling to not allow anyone to board that boat and repeated herself multiple times, each time with a growing sense of urgency. We saw a bunch CMs run through the exit area to the docs, but we were too far back to see what was going on. It didn’t seem to slow down the line, nor did we see anyone being removed, so I have no idea what was going on. Oh well...more waiting.

My concerns with my father were starting to grow. He had difficulties getting in and out of the PotC boat, so I wasn’t sure how it would go with Jungle Cruise. He managed to get in, so it was time to cruise.

I kind of regret not filming this. We had, what I consider to be a really good skipper, and as we’ve all probably seen...this is another ride that’s going to be changing. BUT...I stuck to stills.

I have no idea how many times the girls have been on this ride, but at some point … very early on, the kids blurted out to me that the guy is telling dad jokes and it’s no wonder I think this is funny. Apparently, I like dad jokes...they said bad dad jokes, but I think they were awesome. I’m sure most of you agree too!

I was in an awkward spot on the boat, so for a while, I got some really nice pictures of this netting.

Thankfully, I was able to shift around a bit for some better stuff. Or am I in “DENIAL?” See what I did there!?!?! Good, right?

The kids looked at me like I was nuts when I said this out loud too! I really couldn’t care less if they think I’m an embarrassment at this point. I didn’t yell it or disturb others, so their loss for not being able to have as much fun as I was having!

And I had to explain this to the kids. I can’t believe after all these years, I’m having to explain this to the kids. They are the ones who should be embarrassed! Some Disney fans they are!
