Trip Report COMPLETED- I Couldn't Love You, but Here's $0.25 in Souvenirs- Celebrating 10 Years of Kid Trips to Disney

We began our adventures early on the morning of February 5th. Just before 7am CT, we had my vehicle loaded up and ready to go. I’m not sure how we did it, but we managed some room for the dog so we could drop her off for boarding (aka Camp!) on our way out of town. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. She gets comfortable in the strangest positions...

I haven’t set foot in my office since March 16, 2020, so I have no idea what rush hour really looks like these days or if Fridays are still lighter traffic days...but it was a breeze getting out of Houston.

I have no pictures for you until shortly after Lafayette, LA. I was driving up until this point, but after a series of urgent texts from my boss, we decided to stop and switch drivers. I’m not a big fan of critical conference calls at the start of my vacation, but these days, I’m thankful to be gainfully employed. After I got off the phone, I took a few pics as we were driving through the Atchafalaya.

It’s probably for the best that I wasn’t taking pics prior to this. Everything around Lake Charles, not too far west of this area, is still showing a lot of damage and tarps from the 2020 hurricane season, so it's pretty depressing. I also hate driving over the Mississippi in Baton Rouge, so I was pretty happy to have David at the wheel.

Speaking of David (and everyone else), if you want all of the details, please take a look at my PTR. https://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/family-return-to-wdw-take-2.971452/

Now, if it looks rainy and gloomy...it’s because it was. We were at the leading edge of a front that was moving east. The rain stayed with us for a good portion of the drive.

50912470921_c0ff159fa3_z.jpg

In light of everything Covid, we didn’t stop at any of our usual lunch spots. I packed a small cooler full of lunch stuff and we stopped at the Mississippi welcome center to eat. Unfortunately, it was really chilly, so we ate in the car. That didn’t stop a ton of pigeons from surrounding us in hopes that we’d drop some crumbs on the way to the trash.

50912602042_17e37c003c_z.jpg

I was aiming for Tallahassee for the night. That’s usually where we wind up when we make good time, but we’d left so early that we were in Tallahassee by dinner time...even with losing an hour when crossing into the Eastern time zone. We didn't even have traffic with the tunnel in Mobile! Not sure why we decided on Whataburger when we have tons of them at home and this one was way off the highway, but we went a bit out of our way to eat at this one for who knows what reason. At least it had a nice little drive-in area to park and eat.

50915171003_17f6c94374_z.jpg

Somewhere in between Pensacola and Tallahassee, we also developed a bit of a car problem…

50915855166_9bd66c7dce_z.jpg

50931651393_818565f737_z.jpg

Somehow, my front sensor got blocked, which in turn disabled all of my front end safety features...as well as my cruise control. I’d had this happen once before, but it quickly corrected itself. This time, it wasn’t going away. The rest of the trip both to Disney and back would be done without cruise control. I felt like I’d jumped back in time to my first car!

We could have stopped for the night at this point. It was late enough that it wouldn’t have been crazy, but it was early enough that we felt the need to push on. So, I booked a hotel in Gainesville and we kept driving. I lived in Gainesville for several years in the early to mid 90s, so it always feels a bit strange to go back, but it was the best option for the night. It took a little bit of time to get all of our stuff upstairs, but by driving a bit farther this evening, we could all relax a bit and sleep in a little the next morning. And silly...we could be silly.

We slept in a little on February 6th. I think it was around 9am when we went downstairs to grab some breakfast to bring back to the room. It was mainly just some cereal, fruit and hard boiled eggs. We couldn’t sit around too long, because we remembered that I forgot to get cash. I couldn’t remember if the toll plazas had switched to toll by plate (they had) and I’d need some cash for tips upon arrival at WDW. So, we waved good-bye to the LaQuinta…

50931651398_b3907a04aa_z.jpg

And headed to Publix…

50932461472_8a43d76ef4_z.jpg

I didn’t spend a lot of time in there, but it was really strange, because this was the Publix we’d shop at when we lived in Gainesville. It just happened to be the closest to the hotel. It also was in the same shopping center as a restaurant I used to work at for a couple of years...so a real trip down memory lane.

With cash in hand (and an extra stick of deodorant purchased so I could get cash back), we were on our way to WDW. I also got some time to call and set up an appointment to get my vehicle in the shop when we got home (more on that later).

David was driving, so I was actually able to take a few pics on my phone when we arrived.

50915866811_0393bf4a09_z.jpg

This was also his choice of arrival music. I still don’t get it, but he’s got a pretty fun Idina Menzel impersonation. I regret not taking video, but I was taking pictures.

50915868921_699811458f_z.jpg

I’m sure most of us have experienced this, but between my phone, the MDE app, and our magic bands, they knew that we were on property. I immediately got notification that our room wasn’t ready, so I wasn’t expecting much upon arrival.

50932338506_547527319e_z.jpg

After getting a multitude of welcome homes from the security booth attendant (Kendall had all kinds of questions about this practice), a very nice guy with bell services helped with our luggage (who looked kind of funny at the big air mattress I had in the mix) and a woman, who magically knew it was me, told me she’d messaged housekeeping to put a rush on our room. So, all there was left to do at this point was park and figure out what to do with ourselves while we waited. Since I’d canceled our B&C ADR, we didn’t have any place to be until 5pm...and it was 11:48am. Hey, I told Disney we’d be showing up around noon.

Coming up...managing the wait, first impressions on our room, and an evening in Disney Springs.

We exited our cruise after this. Yes, we survived...although, my dad did have some troubles getting out of the boat.

I also almost caused a major pile up over hand sanitizer. I love that it’s everywhere, but they often don’t dispense fast enough to keep things moving and we encountered a number of them that needed refills that were really backing up lines. We did see a few of those hand washing stations they added early on, but I can’t remember seeing anyone using those. Moving on...

Sam and David went off in search of food.

Have you ever noticed the sharp teeth these guys have inside their mouths?

50936259208_dc3cfc8fa7_z.jpg

Obviously, I know their mouths move, but I don’t know if I’ve ever sat right next to them like this before. Those babies are SHARP! I tried getting a pic, but my timing was always off. From the angles I’ve always been at, they always just looked like dark voids in there. There are a couple of pics farther down on this guy’s photo page that show the Disneyland version. https://www.davelandweb.com/tikiroom/ I was just shocked because after all of our times going in here, I NEVER noticed. And they are sharp! Mean tikis!

After our time with the birds, we decided to get some snacks of our own. I texted David this image of where we were.

And then we got into a very slow moving line at Aloha Isle.

50936945136_11b2253357_z.jpg

I swear, the line started in Frontierland! I didn’t even notice that ¾ of the pickup windows were for mobile ordering until my dad pointed it out and we had to find the end of the walk up line. I checked the app and we’d be waiting until 4:30pm if we wanted to use the app for Dole Whips. So, we waited.

50936258508_74e8d36237_z.jpg

During our wait, I could see that a cavalcade was going through Frontierland.

50937054882_2fa6c68917_z.jpg

The group in front of us was also a bit cranky. I don’t fully blame them. The line was long and based on the bend where they were for some of the time and where people were sitting, it was hard to tell that any of us were in line. Still, at some point, it felt like they were defending their spots from us. I made it clear I knew we were behind them, so I was just hoping they could hurry up and get these people their Dole Whips so they could be less cranky.

OMG- we’re almost there!

50936257803_7d3f5c2141_z.jpg

Look who finally found us!

50937054192_389ded1997_z.jpg

They weren’t happy. They had a hard time getting food and wound up with ice cream. David isn’t as well versed on what’s open, what’s where, and so on. So, I guess he tried to go to Pecos Bill to get a snack and they refused because he didn’t mobile order. He didn’t realize CHH and Casey’s also weren’t open and he didn’t know about some of the other places, like Sleepy Hollow. He could have asked for help, but oh well.

Kendall got the float swirled with raspberry.

50936943926_96e5d52e82_z.jpg

And I got the Kakamora.

50936257318_c9f23ea047_z.jpg

It was good, but it wasn’t the WOW I was expecting. I’ve just seen so many vloggers rave about it. Kendall’s was better.

Things were really crowded in this area, so we went to find a better spot. I noticed the ceramic in the pavement along the way.

50936257198_3a4aaef8cc_z.jpg

Before we could find a spot, we needed to wait on Tink to go by.

I don’t know what came over me, but I started waving like a little kid and yelled hi to Tink. Disney Magic.

We crossed over to the area by the water and saw Liver Lips had come out.

50936942586_5cd072500a_z.jpg

I forget which kid questioned his name, but I’m like...you guys met him last trip. He joined our group, he took our hands, he walked with us to the edge of Frontierland. How can you not remember him!!?!?!?!?

We were at least in a nice little area to enjoy our goodies.

My family also has a joke and they sometimes refer to me as a duck. It’s why that 2014 cake says the line about quacking. So, these guys paddled over and everyone started saying that my kind have come to join me. Nice.

50937051502_fa8981207d_z.jpg

Shortly after this, I lost my mind with Kendall. I noted a little while back that she wasn’t carrying her backpack. I guess she grew tired of caring her stuff in her hands and pockets and started trying to pull me aside to jam everything into my bag. At first, I jokingly asked why I had to carry her stuff, but...
-David jumped in and asked where her backpack was.
-She said she didn’t bring it.
-He asked her why.
-She said she didn’t like carrying it.
-I jumped in and said that it’s not like I love carrying her stuff.
-She replied that it was better than her having to carry it.
-I asked her if she noticed how dad sometimes takes the bag to give me a break.
-She says OK, so what does that have to do with me?
-I said, you know I don’t exactly love carrying your stuff. You’re old enough to carry your own.
-She says she doesn’t want to and that I’d probably carry stuff for Sam if she didn’t want to.

You get the idea. It took a nasty downward spiral, I aggressively handed her all of her stuff, and she stayed behind with my parents while David, Sam and I went off to do some other things (parents' suggestion). I wasn’t quite as abrupt as it sounds, but she didn’t want to be with us and we needed some distance from her and I know she wanted to privately vent to grandma. So, it was the best solution at the time.

Coming up...how long would she stay away, and what to do before dinner.

Ugh, the dreaded question of who gets to be a pack mule. Even my husband will hand me stuff to put in my backpack, saying it's "handier" for me to have it. It's "handier" for me to have the power banks, because his phone battery lasts longer than mine, and I'm with the kids more and they might need it. It's "handier" for me to carry the water, because he doesn't drink it. It's "handier" for me to have the autograph books and pens because he goes off on his own more and the kids are with me. But the "You should do it because I don't want to" would make me angry. I can see why you needed some distance from her. Sometimes I think maybe I should just bring an umbrella stroller for the backpack so I don't have to carry it!

Obviously, from stuff in this report, she's going through a really forgetful stage. It's a daily thing. I was hoping that managing her own stuff in a backpack might help her learn to keep track of important things, but obviously, that failed. It wasn't until I got the whole "I don't want to" stuff from her that I lost it. One day she'll get it...or so I keep telling myself.

I was still pretty angry as we walked off, but I was very happy to have my parents there to help us separate while we needed this time to cool down. I could be wrong, but I think I took a pic of the ground as we were walking off... anger picture? I just found this in my phone pics around that time, so that’s all I can think it could be.

You might also wonder why we hadn’t tried to ride SDMT. While the kids enjoy it, David and I find it extremely uncomfortable. Last time we were there with the kids, we let them ride using our FPs. No point in waiting 65+ minutes for something we know is going to hurt. So, we went to Pooh.

Kendall wound up joining us. We were all going to be riding in one hunny pot, and my parents were going to stay behind and rest. So, it shouldn’t really impact other guests...and long as she was civil and didn’t say anything to set me off any more.

We pulled up the app and the wait for Peter Pan didn’t look too bad, so we headed there next.

Looks like they’ve remarked this line. Interesting how you can see the outline from an old sticker. That was one of the more frustrating things with longer lines. Many stickers were gone and you were having to rely on these kinds of outlines to space.

50937040077_2cc8e9617f_z.jpg

This was also around the time when some entitled $#!%#&@)$ cut the line. It was a couple with their infant child and nanny. They looked very trendy and didn’t respond when the people around them tried to tell them to go to the back of the line. No CMs were near this part of the line either, so they didn’t budge.

Getting closer…

How to solve the pack mule issue in the Max family?

Spread out the lifting load to more mules!!
1616003839910.png

These small string closed packs/bags were purchased by all 3 of the ladies in 2007
(and yes Jordan had a pink bag for this trip - Steph was not impressed)

Able to carry essentials and a least one bottle of water , these babies significantly reduced my backpack's payload
On some days I would not even bring a bag- just randomly give one of them my water bottle.

The girls were 10 and 8 in 2007 so we have been using this technique for awhile
I now have a similar bag for my stuff

Sharing the load!!

Max

We tried something like those a while back.

They wound up in my bag after the novelty wore off. Granted, the girls were a bit younger at this point, but I was really hoping this time would be different since the Loungefly backpacks have padded straps for comfort and hold a bit more.

We're just often rushing out the door so much in the morning for me to notice K leaving her bag behind before it's too late.

I'm sure she will. She's what....14? At that age, the world revolves around them. They don't see how their actions affect others....like her comment when you mentioned that your husband took the backpack to give you a break, and she says "Well what does that have to do with me?" Maybe for a future trip, you could make a rule that anyone who has something in the backpack has to take a turn carrying the backpack? That way she is responsible for it and understands what it's like carrying stuff for other people, etc? Or maybe she'll bring her own backpack so she has less to carry with it being just her stuff? Incentive, I guess.

Furry back!!! :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious: oh mylanta... that's hilarious!!!

Sam and K remind me a lot of me and my sister when we were younger. We're 2.5 years apart in age so when we would go off alone at Disney, we often had the same sibling spats. Heck, even now we have some sibling spats at the park, though not as bad lol

Loving your view from the Boardwalk! We tried to rent points there for our trip next month so we can walk to DHS but they are booked solid! They're even booked for next January for marathon weekend (if it even happens!) We were hoping to stay there so we could walk to IG at Epcot and be closer to get on Ratatouille! Looks like everyone has the same idea!! LOL

In the future, we definitely need to set down some ground rules for bag carrying. So much of her drama is the age, but I could have avoided some of this if I was clear up front that they'd be responsible for their stuff, as well as ensuring both kids had bags before leaving the room. I agree with her that she didn't have enough to warrant a full backpack, but she's got enough packs and crossbody bags at home that we could have brought something like that as a plan B. Next time!

Kids come up with some of the greatest things. My husband still gets on my case about how I corrected Kendall when she thought Buzz Lightyear said "To Miss Finity, and Beyond!" Like Miss Finity is some kind of pageant queen. 🤣

I'm sure, as they get older, things will improve with the sibling rivalry stuff. They are also such different people that I'm sure some will just be maturing and learning to deal with the differences.

I've heard that BWV can be nearly impossible to get with points. My parents' friends are DVC and that's their home resort. They can never get rooms there. Granted, they don't plan very far in advance, but they're also FL residents with about a 1.5-2 hour drive to get to WDW. So, they bought some time ago, hoping they could just decide they were going to Disney on shorter notice. I definitely liked the convenience of BWV. Last year, I recall availability at BW, BC and YC was pretty slim for Marathon. I can understand why.

Shortly before it was time to check in, we also wound up in the middle of a mask situation. Two women came over near us, sat down and were just hanging out without masks. They weren’t eating or drinking and this wasn’t a relaxation zone. A CM did come over and tell them they’d need to put them back on. They did...and then they walked far enough away for her not to see them and took them right back off again. I believe this was also the day where my parents saw a woman fighting with CMs about having to wear one at all...noting someone else not wearing one and not being forced. Unless that was a different day...but either way, not cool.

I checked in, but my dad wanted us to see if we could be seated sooner. Kind of a it never hurts to ask thing. I had just checked in, but Kendall was antsy too, so she went to check. Meanwhile, I was watching the sun set on Adventureland.
