Trip Report **COMPLETED** December 2021 - "I'll Be Home For Christmas"

I just came back today from a short 3 night WDW vacation. It's going to take me a couple of days edit the pictures and get my thoughts together so that I can start writing this report. It was a really fun trip although it wasn't long enough!!! There were some highs and definitely some lows. But, averaged together, it was a pretty good trip. Despite the heat that I wasn't prepared for LOL.

When: December 12-15, 2021
Why: 19th Anniversary Trip, 50th Celebration, Christmas focus, and just to get away from the house kind of trip
Where: Port Orleans French Quarter
Who: Me and the husband (R)

In some ways, I was pleasantly surprised by this trip. But also really disappointed in some of Disney's recent decisions. I don't think R noticed it as much as I did. He has a horrible memory so each trip is almost like his first one 😂

I never was able to catch the holiday show projections but I did like it as the beacon of magic

PXL_20211215_014440773.jpg

I'm just now remembering that I wanted to take a picture of another ad on the wall but I got distracted by the restroom not having a line and forgot all about it. Oh well. We hopped into some of the stores to see if there was any merchandise there we liked. There was not. I mean to put the following picture in the previous post. When we got out of the line for Mania, this projection show was happening.

PXL_20211215_021708457.jpg

I never was able to get a good image. We saw this in 2019 and thought it was cute. We had wasted enough time at park closing to hope the lines for the buses were better and we were right. We didn't have to wait long or stand up when we got on a bus to Riverside.

PXL_20211215_025836192.jpg

Now THIS sight welcomes me home. It's what was missing our entire trip. We liked FQ just fine but it was NOT our beloved second home, Riverside.

PXL_20211215_030116234.jpg

I was glad to have stayed in the new to me FQ but we missed POR. I did love the small size of FQ and the one bus stop but Riverside has both of our hearts. Next trip, I would like to do a split stay again (like we did in 2019) and stay at POR, CSR, and either a value resort (since we've never stayed in one) or a deluxe. I kinda like the idea of staying at one of the All Stars closer to Blizzard Beach and the mini golf so we can walk to if we wanted. Anyways, back to Riverside.

PXL_20211215_031529591.jpg

We walked around the gift shop and bought a themed shirt we both liked. Unfortunately, they only had a size small left, so R couldn't get one. I'll post pics of my purchases at the end of the report. I even missed Riverside's dining area :) It was getting late and we still had something we needed to do. Any guesses? We started the short walk to FQ.

PXL_20211215_032113233.jpg

If you guessed beignets, you would be correct!

PXL_20211215_033248153.jpg

We just sat in the lobby and enjoyed our beignets. I think it was getting close to 11PM so we headed back to the room to start packing. It felt nice to be able to sleep in a little bit. We had plans to just stay around the resort and relax before we got picked up but were starting to discuss going to DS. I copied over my Christmas Tree stroll map to the non-destroyed one.

PXL_20211216_174538711.jpg

I realized that I never did pick up my button but was fine with it. Got ready for bed and slept like a baby without having to stress over Genie+ and ILL.

Up next - Wednesday, December 15th - Last day: Resort Check out, Disney Springs, and Return home

I’m glad you posted a picture of the running shoes, because I was curious. I love the the look of On but they are not the right running fit for me.

Honestly, I don't think he loves them as much as he expected to. His favorite running shoes are some Nike style that he always raves about.

For anyone curious, my notecard for HS had the following list:

1. Mickey and Minnie Runaway Railway - almost experienced it in full
2. Galaxy's Edge: Rise of Resistance, Smugglers, Ronto Roasters, and Blue/Green Milk. I did all of these except Ronto Roasters.
3. Toy Story Mania and Saucers - did them both
4. Holiday Decor - saw most of it
5. Holiday and 50th special treats - forgot all about them. I had wanted to go to Trolley Car Cafe to get the red velvet whoopie pie, ABC Commissary for the frozen hot chocolate with cherry bourbon and sugar cookie snowman. Catalina Eddies for the strawberry shortcake and Woody's lunch box. None of that happened :)
6. Hollywood Brown Derby - did it

My only complaints about HS really had to do with Rise being down so often causing wait times to balloon everywhere else, MMRR breaking while I was on it, paying for ILL, and the crowds. All in all, I think it was a very productive day.

My local running shoe store has you go outside and run down the block, which is why I know On is not for me. And although they always have me try different brands, I usually come back to Brooks. I think I might still have one ASICS pair in my rotation as well.

Asics trail shoes have always been the most comfortable shoe for my foot for any activity

We slept late and finished packing our bags and were out of our room by 10:30AM. We did a final room check to confirm nothing left behind. We took our bags to bell services and then had breakfast at the resort. R and I had the same breakfast platter. Originally, I had an ADR for Boma breakfast since I had to cancel Boma dinner but we were just too tired. There was no way either of us were waking up early yet again. But we were both content with this.

PXL_20211215_160054175.jpg

Originally, we were going to do the scavenger hunt that's at POFQ and I even got the clues from registration. But we weren't being picked up by DME until 2:40 so we changed plans and hopped on a boat to DS. We didn't have long to wait and the captain was hilarious and channeling his inner Jungle Cruise skipper: "what do you call the unused docks at Town Center and West Side? A pair a' docks" 🤣 He had many more like that. It definitely felt like a brand new attraction with him as the captain. Sure wish I had gotten his name! The crowds were very low at DS that Wednesday during early afternoon and it was so enjoyable! We popped into the Christmas store and happened upon the Bowe's candle section. I bought some wax melts, which will be in a later post. I don't know why I don't remember the fairies suspended from the ceiling from other other times in this store.

PXL_20211215_170326725.jpg

Went into the Boathouse gift shop where R started laughing hysterically at this sign. I made a pledge to myself and the restaurant that I would eat there the next time I'm at WDW :)

IMG_2379.jpeg

We discussed going to Jock Lindsay's for the Christmas overlay since they weren't busy but we decided against it bc we didn't want to feel rushed for time and we didn't know how fast service was going to be. I saw Gideon's and there wasn't a very long line. I asked the CM how long the virtual queue was and he asked how many. When I answered just 2 he told me to get in the line. Seriously? I don't have a virtual wait or anything? I was SO happy. A few minutes later someone else asked and he said it was a 2 hour wait. Boy, didn't I feel special with that little bit of magic?! While in line, R had a potty emergency and while I was waiting, who did I see but Molly from Allears!!!!!

PXL_20211215_173034889.jpg

A guy in line behind me called and and asked her for a selfie. She's our favorite Disney vlogger. R and I were just talking about not noticing any vloggers this trip and we were hoping to see Molly. I sent him a text and he was waaay annoyed that he didn't get back in time to see either Mollie or see inside of Gideons.

PXL_20211215_173834464 (1).jpg

PXL_20211215_173406402.jpg

I went with just their original chocolate chip cookie.

PXL_20211215_172743463.jpg

PXL_20211215_173855131.jpg

It was good but I wouldn't wait in line for hours for it. R and I both felt like there were too many chocolate chips and was just too sweet for our preferences. I was glad to try it though. If there's no wait next time, I wouldn't mind trying their peanut butter crunch as I prefer those (R isn't a huge fan of peanut butter).

We started making our way back to the PO boat dock. We went into a few more stores but nothing that was memorable. Saw some more cute holiday decor.

PXL_20211215_171845177.jpg

I noticed the sweet smell of Goofy's Candy Co wafting around bridge area. I stuck my head inside to see if it smelled as good inside and it did not. My suspicions were almost confirmed that Disney was piping the smell to draw people to it. Sneaky sneaky Disney.

On the way back to the resort, R was annoyed that he missed Molly bc that was the one thing he was hoping would happen LOL. I think we got back to the resort around 1:30. We looked around the gift shop one more time and decided against anything else as our bags were packed. We considered getting more beignets while we were waiting but R wasn't feeling the best and didn't want to eat anything before our flight. So we just sat in the area staying hydrated. And what happened? Molly!!

IMG_2380.jpeg

R was like a little stalker waiting until she finished her work. If you're on here Molly, sorry for the paparazzi like pictures 🤣

IMG_2381.jpeg

The people behind them were probably wondering what in the world was going on LOL. This was a great ending to the trip for R. The c

We picked up bags from guest services and went outside to wait at the stop about 2:20ish. The bus was supposed to get there at 2:40 but it was about 10 minutes late. We were the first bus stop and I had Mickey waving me goodbye.

PXL_20211215_200507266.jpg

We went to Riverside where we picked up Riverside. It was a very short ride to the airport. Again, we were extremely glad to not have to deal with checked baggage. We got there early enough where we had time to look into some of the gift shops. I took a picture of this even though neither of us wanted to get inside for a picture. But I felt like there was more Disney 50th at the airport compared to WDW itself.

PXL_20211215_204504989.jpg

I got pics of all 4 of these screens. I couldn't get a centered shot bc one man just would not move.

One last Christmas tree before flying home

PXL_20211215_204655540.jpg

We finally found the line for TSA Precheck and were relieved that we had it bc the regular security lines were very long. While we were in line for Precheck, about 7 people ended up getting out of line bc they realized they had been waiting in the wrong lane and they couldn't go thru. That bumped us up further in line. Yay! I always get so frazzled at this checkpoint bc I don't fly often enough to recall the procedures and I'm a scared flier anyways so I always lose all sense here. But we got thru with only minor hiccups and made our way to our gate. We had maybe an hour wait at this point. I was looking around at the others waiting (it was not a full flight) when I noticed something odd. There were an unusually large number of elderly in wheelchairs flying individually to Richmond. I've never seen so many on one flight.

PXL_20211215_215531954.jpg

It look a long time to board bc of it. R and I had our little row to ourselves which was nice. I think I might prefer flying during the week instead of weekends. I was also excited/anxious bc this was my first time flying after dark and I didn't know if it would improve or worsen my phobias. I think it made it better. Maybe it was JetBlue's ambient lighting :)

PXL_20211215_230427541.jpg

The free WiFi was working on this flight unlike the trip down. We watched some Young Sheldon (had to share my earbuds with R), we played some trivia games. Little turbulence and I felt good enough to actually go inside the little bathroom.

PXL_20211215_231104499.jpg

PXL_20211215_231505771.jpg

We made fantastic timing. However, all the time we gained in the air was lost with unboarding all of the elderly from the plane. It took us 20 minutes to get off the plane after we got to the gate. There were some odd people around us this trip too but whatever. I was getting another migraine, I was hungry, I was nervous about my dog bc I had finally heard back from my friend who was watching him that she was sick and hadn't wanted me to worry. Eventually we paid for parking and were on our way home. After an hour or so drive, we pulled into our garage about 9PM after we stopped off to get some fast food. I'll skip over all the drama after arriving home.

Up next - purchases and final thoughts

I'm not sure whether I ever attached the picture of the 50th room key I stopped by to get at the lobby at check in. I wish I had thought to get the luggage tags, as well. I was looking for all of the "free" mementos that I could get LOL.

PXL_20211216_032648075.jpg

I took all of the special 50th coffees in our room.

PXL_20211215_153144468.jpg

PXL_20211216_175057972.jpg

I kept 2 (one to try and one to keep) and sent the rest to my friend that loves Disney and coffee. Housekeeping came into our room on Tuesday and gave more of these. But I also noticed that I was missing my earplane ear plugs for the plane. I don't want to say housekeeping took them but if so, I'm sure they were mighty disappointed to find out they weren't expensive ear buds LOL.

My Take-Along Guide was Taken Home.

PXL_20211216_174713695.jpg

This is the shirt that R and I both liked but was only in my size :)

PXL_20211216_175530764.jpg

Apparently these shirts were not huge hits and the CM at check out was very thankful that another one was sold. She didn't know what the new style would be though.

R and I collect pins. So we had to the get 50th Donald and Daisy bc Donald is my favorite out of all of them. The Festival of the Holidays pin that I was disappointed with despite R liking Olaf. You could barely see the tiny blue Festival detail in the lower left corner. I also found the special holiday Port Orleans pin at Riverside the last night there. The cat, Marie, is the character under the tree. Strange character choice for the Port Orleans resorts but okay  I got the older edition, I think, of the PO French Quarter resort to add to my resort pin collection. I didn't like the other option all that much. And R liked this Grogu, which I do have to say is pretty cute.

PXL_20211216_175707433.jpg

And these are the wax melts that I purchased. I have a lot of candles and wax melts. More than I should have but not as many as some that belong to FB candle groups. Thank goodness, otherwise, my husband would divorce me :) They are usually $12 each but they were having a sale of buy 2 and get each for $10. More than I'm willing to pay for wax melts but I really hadn't purchased much Disney merchandise this trip. And I always go crazy with Disney scents after a Disney vacation. Usually I buy Disney inspired scents from ScentAir, Magic Candle Company, or Three Cheeky Chicks on Etsy. R loved the Mango Papaya bc it's the tropical scent he loves. Clover World smells a lot like the usual GF scent while Gingerbread was supposed to smell like the GF during the holidays. And Seas the Moment is a sweet scent. These are nice scented wax melts but they don't last as long in my warmers like those from MCC.

PXL_20211216_183953644.jpg

And, as proof, of my travel notecards to remind me of what not to forget while in the parks.

PXL_20211216_192425650.jpg

I still think these notecards would've been perfect if I had remembered I had them in my bag! 🤣 And I told my husband when we got back home - the trees I saw at Disney were pretty but I still like mine better LOL.

PXL_20220101_000215050.jpg

The framed art behind the tree was a purchase from Shop Disney a few years ago that says "forget about your worries and your strife." The Jungle Book was one of my Mom's favorite Disney movies and The Bare Necessities was one of her favorite Disney songs so I had to have it when it was released.

Now to my final thoughts. Those that have ready my posts on other reports and posts already know this but I'll quickly summarize. I enjoyed my trip and I had fun. I love Disney and WDW and I probably always will. But I found this trip too stressful with the changes caused by Genie+ and ILL. I didn't like having to cancel the dining I was looking forward to in order to make certain ride times work. I didn't like having to pay so much extra to have a similar type of experience. I'm glad I canceled the more expensive Candlelight Processional dinner at Biergarten bc I would not have felt it was a good value for our time or money this year. Maybe one day in the future, I'll feel differently. This was the first trip where I didn't feel overly sad about going home. I've been back home for over a week and I'm not even excited about our next trip, whenever that will be. We won't be leaving our dog, Pippy, alone anymore because of his age and health. I find myself thinking more about a possible future trip to Universal Orlando, a Florida road trip, or maybe going to Atlantis resort. I will go to Disney again but I would do Disney even differently than this trip. This year, in order to make it more affordable with the costs of the Very Merriest After Hours tickets, we downgraded from a river view to a standard room at FQ (no complaints from us, their standard rooms were good) and went from a 2 day park hopper to no park hopper. We didn't eat at as many table services as we usually do. We used the Disney Visa credit card for the 10% off at Brown Derby and were pleasantly surprised to get 10% off at Polite Pig, as well. I couldn't use the 10% for the pins bc we had to buy them at separate locations. Feeling like I had to keep my pennies bc Disney was trying to steal them took away some of the magic from me this trip. I definitely felt like I was paying more in order to get less. I still struggle finding words to describe my feelings about this. The next WDW trip, I wouldn't mind going to AK since we missed it this trip and the possibly to Wild Africa Trek. Maybe doing an After Hours event at HS again, if any are offered. But I want to focus on the water parks, Cirque, miniature golf, dinner shows, and other dining. Things that are new to us. That makes me excited. But the theme parks as they are right now? Not so much.

Nice work on the TR! I can certainly understand your feelings on the trip. I am disheartened to see that sentiment show up in many TRs lately.

Nice Christmas tree also! And hope Pippy stays as happy and comfy as possible.

Thank you for the TR. I share some similar feelings about certain aspects of the parks. I hope your dog is doing ok. It’s certainly hard to watch them get older.

Thanks for sharing. I hope Pippy is doing better.

Pip improved once we got home. My now former friend (I assume as we did not end things on a good note), never did give him his morning meds and that really messed him up. With the stress of us gone, in addition to not having all his needed meds, affected him more than I liked. At his age, with Cushing's, there will only ever be so much improvement. But right now all his stats are in a place where both the vet and I are content. It probably took a week after we got home to get him back to his new normal. He had a really great day so that really warmed my heart. It was almost like he was a puppy again instead of an almost 16 year old dog with a life threatening illness. Wish I had gotten video of it but I never have my phone with me when I need it the most LOL.

My time spent at Disney Springs my last day was one of the highlights of the trip. And I truly do think it was because there was no Genie or ILL and there was hardly anyone there that time of day. So it had the vibe of old Disney, if that makes sense. I definitely had fun this trip, but then again, my husband and I are the type that we can have fun in a museum or in a state park. We don't need the constant amusement of a theme park. But as the planner of all of our vacations, especially WDW, I definitely felt more stress this year than previous trips. It might not have been so bad if we were there for a week and had more time. But with only 2 full non-travel days, I definitely felt more pressure to either get reservations for all of the new rides or schedule our park time in order to get everything we wanted done. I felt like Genie+ overcomplicated everything in a way FP+ didn't.

I don't know what happened. She didn't get a migraine until Monday but he didn't get all his needed meds on Sunday either. I even put everything in a pill organizer with detailed notes. I don't know how much time she got to spend with him, how much he either ate or didn't eat, or anything I needed to know bc we never talked in person after I got back home. Honestly, I'm still confused and befuddled by everything that happened when we got back home. But while there was drama (of some variety LOL) at least no one died like the previous 2 trips!! So our trips are improving 🤣

First, thanks for sharing your trip. It was very fun to follow along.
And in response to this quote, I agree totally. People complained about the 180 day dining and 60 day FP or what ever the time frame was. But, it gave you time to adjust knowing these things ahead. With genie(-) you at best have hours.
It totally stinks.

It really adds an unnecessary complication to trip planning!
