College Program Criticism

There was an interesting article in the Miami Herald today.

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/business/12202039.htm

As much as I would love to work at Disney, cleaning up garbage/working foodservice isn't close to any type of experience I can take with me into the workforce. Besides meeting people, making connections, and being in the magic, there would be no job experience.

Ariel Belle don't take this the wrong way but I think you have got a lot to learn yet about real work experience. I think you might be surprised by what you might learn cleaning up garbage or working food service. (if not about the job maybe about yourself) Not to mention everyone works there way from the botton of the ladder to the top. Give it some thought.

I am a proud mother of a CP, in fact he is a campus rep right now. He grew up so much and in so many ways. And yes, having "Disney" on your resume is a BIG plus! Everyone wants to interview him, just because of it.

He made a lot of friends, plus his girl friend, which he is still with after a year!

My other son is looking into it and will probably sign on. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn about a large company and meet people from all over the world. Is the work hard, yes but well worth the time put into it. I really wish they would have had the program when I was in college.

Vista does need to be cleaned up I will agree.
If you have the opportunity to do the program, you should do it, it is well worth the sweat put into it!

u want the dirty details from a CP? Think about it...thousands of college students in one place...let your imaginations run wild! LOL OK so its not that crazy...

I am CP Alumni as well...The same things happen that happen at any major university. The program is amazing, but you can't be afraid of hard work. You also have to have some basic social skills to handle living with room mates.

I have written a paper on the subject. I find the biggest downfall of the College Program was eliminating the Summer Only Program. They used to have 100,000 + (Applicants for Summer of 2000) people interview for 3,000 summer only positions. Then they would use the Fall and Spring Spots for those who didn't get in the summer and could afford to miss a semester of school.

Now the College Program hires a lot of Community College and Junior College kids to work the 7 month programs. Most of these Cp-ers have never lived outside of their parents' homes. A lot of them have never had a job besides babysitting. They go wild because they haven't had a couple semesters at a University with similar social experiences.

In brief...I worked Summer 2000, Summer 2001, and Summer 2002. You could only apply for the "Summer only program in 2002" if you were alumni. During Summer 2000, every other CP-er that you came across gave you the vibe that they were going to be a CEO of the next Fortune 500 Company. Amazing People. You would do just as much networking with your fellow CPs as Disney Executives. During Summer 2002, you would meet other CP-ers who hated Disney but wanted to get away from school and living at home for a semester+summer.

I have done a lot of research and writing in depth on this topic. None of which has ever been published. It explains how amazing an opportunity the CP can be for anyone who is motivated and has a passion about being able to work there. If anyone ever wants to read it or has any questions about the CP, please contact me.

The role (ie. Operations, Custodial, Quick Food, Greeter) that one has down at Disney has nothing to do with the experience. I have had friends working custodial and quick food that have had better experiences then jungle cruise and haunted mansion operation workers. Disney is very upfront about the role you will receive. Never believe any story about a CP-er being deceived before they arrived down in Orlando.

I highly recommend the program to any college student who has had an hourly job before and has the necessary social skills to be a reasonable room mate.

I've rambled enough...

This is a great "networking" opportunity. Just because Disney does not hand you the keys does not mean that you can't make your own destiny. Even by doing jobs you don't like you can make a name for yourself and work your way up.

what does disney look for most in accepting people? is it their grades? or what they are majoring in?
Applying for the regular College Program -

Grades are not a factor. You just need the Registrar to sign and confirm that you have a 2.0 + GPA. No Transcript is required.

It is usually a brief interview (2-4 minutes). The interview is either a group or individual interview depending on the amount of applicants at that specific location. They mainly are looking at your personal interaction skills during the interview. How you interact between you and the interviewer and others in your group. I could give you a list of sample questions I had been asked in my interviews. You can see the rest of the application online at www.wdwcollegeprogram.com. I found it never hurt to bring a one page resume with you. Although a resume is not required.

Advanaced Internships require a Transcript and sometimes a specific are of study (major). They can require several indepth phone interviews.

Hope this helps,

I don't know why they limit their "real" opportunities (whether in marketing, guest relations or other office jobs) to those students who already participated in the college program. Unfortunately, I only have one open semester to intern...so that option wouldn't work.

What do you all think of Disney basically using their college interns as a cheap alternative to full time/part time employees doing the same jobs? I'm not sure I understand why they limit an interns experience...

Are there any college program participants who have a different take on the story? It seems as if this article was sort of criticizing Disney's program...

I'm a technical theatre major (audio) and one of my professors put it best. He basically pointed out the fact that learning how to operate audio consoles and video mixers and such is one thing and is very limited, but the one thing everyone does is constantly learning how to deal with people. My CP had nothing to do with my major (I was a busser at Pecos). I'd actually never been to WDW before.

Being down there just makes you aware of where you fit in. It allows you to deal with people from all over the world and in different situations. It's seriously one of the best experiences I've had (so much, that I'm returning). As someone else pointed out, where else can you watch Wishes every night and say "I make magic!"

I would LOVE to read your paper if you wouldn't mind. My email address is webmaster@papered.net.

This topic is very interesting being someone who will be joining the CP Program this fall. It gives you the truth with no sugar coating. :)

 Yes it is!!

I did the CP Spring '04. I ended up leaving a few weeks early, but that was my college internship and I had graduated in May, so I was really just down there earning $6 an hour with a degree and I seriously needed money. I regret leaving at all-I loved Florida. I liked Florida and working for Disney more than the actual CP. The rules were tough-I lived in Chatham and got busted leaving Vista Way late a couple of times from the Nazi security guards. I hated opening my trunk to prove that I wasn't sneaking in boys. I hated sharing a room and a CLOSET with someone else. I hated my costume at the Contemporary. :lookaroun I hated that we didn't have a vacuum and we had to borrow one from the Chatham office and I didn't know how it worked and it blew dirt all over my living room. But, I loved being able to go to the parks whenever I wanted-I never got tired of watching Wishes or wandering around the World Showcase. I loved working at the Contemporary. I loved that my friends and family always came to visit. I loved the weather-beats Indiana winters, that's for sure!! I loved CM nite at Jellyrolls!! I wouldn't do the CP again-not enough $$ and you're the minions of the company-but I would live in Florida again and work for Disney in my current field in a heartbeat. It's an experience you'll never forget.

And I wouldn't call Chatham "Trump nice." Does Ivanka Trump share a bedroom with 2 twin beds and a small-@ss closet with someone from a state she's never been to? I doubt it. But it is better than Vista Lay...er, Way. Or maybe it isn't....:animwink:

Jellyrolls always seemed to be the hip place to go on my CP, but after visiting on CM night (Was it a Tuesday Night?) on more than two consecutive weeks -The piano player's little jokes and 12 song catalog got a little tired to me.

By my last CP, me, my room mates, and good friends at work had a night little schedule down.

Monday Night - Jungle Jims.

Tuesday Night - Jelly Rolls.

Wednesday Night - Chillers on Church Street (80's night).

Thursday Night - Ale House and then Pleasue Island and then dropped off at 1:30 PM for a little game we invented call "Ride Home from a Stranger Night".

Friday Night - We always had a different themed get together at the apartment at Vista Way. Weather it was a Toga Night or the Infamous Socks and Sandals Party.

I know we would go to Bennigans on one night for Buckets, Random Place called Cheers, and Downtown Orlando to some other dance clubs that were great.

That was just our routine and we had a couple folks with us who don't drink that had a great time.

Thanks for letting me take a trip down memory lane,

I will be going down to do the program in 16 days and I am really looking forward to it. My major has nothing to do with my job I am a political science major. The reason I am going is because I have many friends who alumni and they loved it and being a disney freak it just seems perfect. I hope my program is as good as what my friends was. I think you just have to make what you want of it and don't expect to get rich.

Is there anyone who doesn't drink on the CP?? I am not a drinker at all...never have never will be...its just not for me...so I'm just wondering what it is like if you are a non drinker?

not everyone drinks...like mentioned before. Its like a college campus. Some drink some dont. They are VERY strict with underage drinking. Security here is a bit annoying...trunk searches no visitng friends living in other housing complexes past 10 without being signed in...no one after 1 am. 1 am might seem late but when you get off of work at 3 am im still ready to do something before i go to sleep.

There are many good things and bad things about the CP...for me it came down to $$..and they didn't pay enough, so I didn't go into the program...but, if money is not what you're interested in...then the CP would probably work for you...

Welcome to the forum, John.

There’s a rule about bumping long dead threads unless you have something substantive to add, but given that you’re new, I hope people cut you some slack.

Seeing as how we’ve already bumped, would you like to tell us where you worked during your CP days? How long were you at WDW?

Arguably it's a legit bump since he is looking for people from the 2005 college program which is what this thread was about.
