Hey gang,
So were in WDW right now...and my son keeps asking me which monorail color is the fastest train....so I figured I'd ask the experts...

Which train is the quickest in the stable?

They are all supposed to only go 40mph. I have driven some trains on the Epcot beam that only go 38, for whatever reason, but most go 40. And like s8film40 said, you can get them to go faster on hills. I guess the proper question would be "Which Monorail CM is fastest?" :lookaroun

Ya, I bet on the express beam coming out of the Contemporary they can get a few mph faster than normal coming down the hill.

Yes the speed limit there is 30, my record there is 38 in Green. The fastest we can hit is around 47, just at the bottom of the hill from Contemporary, on the Resort beam.

Surely due to differences in tolerances and such one monorail is faster than the others. I just doubt they ever line them up and let them race. lol Maybe that is what they are doing with all the extra time they save by not running during EMH.

Since they are governed down to 40 MPH...the more correct question would be which Monorail has the fastest acceleration...since speed is basically going to be the same across the board.

After notifyig my son of the 40mph limitation...he agrees that we should revise our original question to the above:

I've heard between 60-80mph+

i don't believe 47mph. 46 can only be done once in a while depending on train and load. 44-45mph is the norm coming down the hill.

The irony in this is that you need to bring the train to at least 3mph below the speed limit otherwise you will get an over speed stop before the speed change at ttc ;-)

I saw 47 personally, but that was just because the person who was driving (not me) was going for top speed and didn't put the train into braking, he just kept it in P-5 until it Overspeed stopped (which it stopped right at pylon 15, but I was never tempted to overspeed down the hill if the train ahead was at Base.)

I didn't like speeding down that hill because I always had to keep an eye on my speed after that, because if it clicked back up to 41 for whatever reason (Monorail Red....) you got the Overspeed stop. Wasn't worth it to me. But Base Resort was my favorite station to P-5 into....

The Monorails are Bombardier Mark VIs and were designed to be capable of 70 mph and that's what the motors can do. However, they have a governor that only allows about 50 mph maximum. It is Disney's policies that specify a top operational speed of 40 mph.

So they are all capable of the same maximum speed and have the excess power to accelerate at the same rate. It may have been possible to get to 47 but not terribly likely, that's getting close to maximum and there has to be braking time.

Aw this post takes me back! :D

I'll discuss acceleration and deceleration. In my experience, most of the trains have a relatively equal acceleration though Purple was a little slower than others in that department (maybe Peach will be similar). The biggest difference between each train is its braking. Trains like Black, Gold, Pink, Blue, Silver, and Orange had great brakes. These trains were very easy to park and had a great short stopping distance that easily allowed you to P-5 into a station and stop well before the mark. Red was whatever it felt like on a given day. I always thought it had the biggest attitude of the 12 haha. Lime, Green, and yellow were about average. Now, Coral is in a league of its own, at least when I was a pilot anyway. It's breaks were so bad I never liked piloting it. You go into a station in P-1 or P-2 and you try braking but the train just glides. It seemed like there was always a delay from when you brake to actually slowing down. Very weak. All the other trains you can easily go into neutral then stop. Hard to do with Coral, she just likes to slide. That and Coral and I just never seemed to get along. I'd have to say that 90% of my breakdowns occurred with Coral.

I can confirm I have gotten to 47 many times and without overspeed stops.
