Im not sure if anyone already mentioned it, but would it be an idea to create a new ride system in which we dont board a flying pirate ship, but actually get to fly ourselves, either by laying down and having a robot arm get you closer to the action or something else?
That's a very good idea, but it's one that would be near impossible to execute, especially for small children riding.

Like this?

Probably not suited for all ages. But maybe it could be done. Would still feel like being in a machine rather than genuinely flying

Maybe less of the astronaut costume? They could be harnessed in a chair.
That's just the look of the patent.

The initial concept for soarin was an omnimover where you laid face down if I recall correctly.

Idk the problem with flying attractions is the closer you try to get to simulating actual flight the more clunkier it gets. One of the reasons I think the flying pirate ship vehicle/suspended ride system works is that its lack of realism and mere suggestion of flight in favor of simplistic elegance matches with the lack of realism and simplicity of the sets and action in the ride itself. Even Shanghai chose to create the attraction with nearly static figures and obviously fake but suggestive sets.

That's not to say anything on your idea. I think it could work. More of just an observation.

I agree with you on how the pirate ships are a more efficient way of going about things. Using the mechanical arm technology wasn't my idea. However, to say that shanghai's use of cheap sets and static figures was a design choice? No. They had a specific budget and they knew that they could make their kids rides on the cheaper end. But that's not the case with our Fantasyland. We want to make an immersive land for all to enjoy.
