Choices for traveling from the airport to WDW

In an unrelated thread I’ve gotten some good feedback so I thought I would start a new one.

What are some good choices to travel from the airport to WDW and why? So far Quicksilver and Disney's Magical Express have been recommended. They both sound good; I like the idea of not having to touch your luggage until you get to your room!

I would greatly appreciate your recommendations and why you like it.

Don’t want to rent a car.

Thanks.

Really, those are probably your two best options if you don't want to rent a car. Magical Express if you want to go straight to WDW for free, Quicksilver if you don't want to be on a bus and/or want to make a stop at a grocery store on the way (their prices include a 30-min. grocery run), and you don't mind paying for it.

Trust me, you're gonna love Magical Express. We use it everytime we go. Not only does it help to immerse you in the "Disney Magic" from the moment you leave the airport but it's free and makes your check in experience sooo easy. Also, select airlines allow you to check your luggage at your resort as you leave on your last day. Disney's Magical Express is only available to guests staying in a Disney resort so keep that in mind. Are you staying on or off property?

This feature can be used even if you're not using DME.
Thanks, didn't realize that.

All of the deluxe resorts are fantastic, it just depends on your personal taste. I personally highly recommend either The Wilderness Lodge or Animal Kingdom Lodge. You are gonna find some great and very helpful information on this site, just do a search and if you don't find what you're looking for don't be afraid to ask, everyone here is very helpful...well...almost everybody.:lookaroun

i've read A Grief Observed by C.S. Lewis.

next i want to watch the movie Shadowlands. the story of lewis, how he married joy gresham knowing she was terminal with cancer, their brief and intense relationship. i was told the dialogue between them (when she is dying) is intense with compassion and love.

plus Anthony Hopkins can only be great playing lewis

saw in your profile you like cl lewis so thought i would share this

Just be sure you realize it can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours for your luggage to get to you from the airport, so pack a carryon with things that you will need in the meantime.

i know i want three beds

This will probably be your greatest challenge - most deluxe rooms have 2 queens, some will have 2 queens and a daybed (single sleeper sofa).

The Poly would be perfect if you want three beds. They have 2 queen and a day bed. The rooms are very spacious & renovated w/ flat screen tvs. I love that resort!!!

And you should def choose DME...we never had a problem with it & will use everytime we go to the world. Its great, less hassle w/ luggage, adds the start to the magic. You'll love it!

We used DME last summer & it worked great for us!
The luggage deal is definitely a plus!
We didn't rent a car either & we were there during the "peak" season.
We never had to wait any longer than 10 min. for a bus to or from the parks.
Hope this helps!

I used DME on my trip and loved it. Didn't have to wait at the luggage claims for the suitcase to roll on by, get greeted by happy people who wanted to start your trip magically and the comfy seats & video on the way to the Resort is so much more relaxing than a cramp van packed to the windows.

My bags got there in plenty of time and were sitting in my room when I went back to drop off some stuff I picked up at DTD.

On the trip back, I didn't have to drag anything behind me when checking in anywhere, the Resort took care of my boarding pass & luggage and in fact my luggage got home before me because I checked in a lot earlier than I was suppose to.

So I do recommend DME.

The Poly, Contemporary Resort and the GF all have 2 queen beds and a day bed. My 20 yr old son is 6'0" and is perfectly comfortable in the day bed in any of these resorts. The Poly is our fav resort followed by a close second to the Contemporary. We have used DME since it started and LOVE it. We love the welcome movie riding to the resort. We used Quicksilver before DME and found the drivers to be professional, courteous and efficient. It was really cool riding down the escalator to baggage claim to find a guy holding a sign with your name on it waiting for you. My niece sprained her ankle while on vacation one year and was stuck in a wheelchair the last 2 days. When we rolled up to the van (8 people) and the Quicksilver driver saw us, he asked what happened, showed concern and then when we arrived at the airport, told us to wait in the van while he went into the terminal and got her a wheelchair. Great guy, though I can't remember his name right now (4 yrs ago). I did write the company and complimented him at the time.

Please note that this service is seperate from DME and is only available for certain airlines. DME, however, is available for all resort guests arrivinf at MCO.

We normally use the DME which is great but this time, since it is just my husband and I going and we get in late and leave early, we just booked Quicksilver. I had heard about them on this website so I decided that for this trip we would splurge a little on ourselves. Have fun!

Here are a few things to consider:

DME

Good
  • Free
  • direct service from airport to WDW
  • just tag luggage before you check it at departing airport with DME tags and you do not have to see it again till you are in your room.
Bad
  • If you tag your luggage for DME to deliver it may not arrive at you resort or room for many hours after you have checked in. You can however not tag your luggage and get it yourself from luggage claim and carry it to the DME loading area. This way you will have your luggage when you check in.
  • Waiting for a bus to take you to your resort. My wife came down a few days later on our last trip and had to wait about 1 hr before she was loaded on a bus for our resort.
  • The bus may stop at more than one resort hotel.
Car Service (Quicksilver)

Good
  • The driver is waiting at the bottom of the escalators at luggage claim. He takes you to your luggage carrousel and you pick out your luggage and he takes it to the car. they open the door for you so you can sit inside in the A/C while he loads you luggage.
  • Free stop at the grocery store (30 Minutes). We typically buy lots and lots of water, some snacks and maybe a bottle or 2 of wine for those evening you want to sit on the deck and relax with an adult beverage.
  • Direct transport to resort where they unload all of your luggage and store packages and get bell seervices to check in your bags, so all you have to do is go inside and check-in to your resort.
Bad
  • cost about $125.00 - $135.00 depending on how you like to tip.
We have done both many times and I will tell you that if I have the money to pay for the car I will use it. DME is nice, but it is not as magical as car service. As far as the money goes we almost cover the cost with the grocery stop and buying water. With the price of water @ 2.50 a bottle in the resort it adds up quick. We typicaly go through at least 6 bottles per day which is $105 per week. You can buy 2 cases of water @ Publix or Winn Dixie for about $20.00

Using DME is great for the free ride, but I wouldn't trust my luggage with them for my life.

I know a dozen people are about to type "It worked great fine for me (send)", but I have seen too many issues with it for me to be personally comfortable with it.

Twice now I have walked into a room and found luggage sitting in the room from the previous guests that DME "forgot" to pick up. Both times I have had to wait for them to pick it up (I wasn't about to leave my luggage and some strangers luggage in the same room, lest they mess up and accidentally send mine away), and both times I could have had a real great criminal time with full access to all these people's personal belongings. Not to mention, glad I wasn't these poor people who's planes had already left without their luggage.

Second, I have known several people who have had items lost on DME and none have gotten their stuff back. Why? Because when a bag is lost, DME says "oh must be the airline", the airline says, "Oh, must be DME!" and there is no one to hold accountable.

I'm sure the larger percentage of people use it just fine every day, and I'm sure many people get their stuff just fine, but MY stuff is just too valuable to me on a trip to risk it. Picking up bags at MCO is criminally easy, and I feel *SO* much safer getting themselves when I use DME. In addition, I *REALLY* like being able to check in, get settled, change my clothes, etc. before I run out to the parks, instead of spending my first day in the parks thinking, "Gee, I wonder if my bags will arrive?"

Although I prefer driving now, I think DME is a great bus service. However, I wouldn't trust them with my bags for anything - they say they scan it every ten seconds, it's so safe, etc. - but a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, and there are just too many links to keep track of for my taste. The less hands on my stuff until I get it, the less chance of it to disapear. That simple for me.

I've never stayed in a Deluxe resort, but is DME supposed to pick your luggage up from your room for you? If anything, I'd think the hotel's bell services would bring it to the lobby for you, where you would have to check it into the airline yourself...

i agree with what you and phil wrote. i read it as meaning your leaving it up to someone else to take care of your stuff, lack of control.

and i would like to get to the room and change and not have to wonder if our luggage is making it's way to our room.

my first gut feeling was to go with quicksilver. i like the immediacy of being picked up, stopping for a couple cases of water and supplies, and getting our luggage into the room quickly

thanks

From what I have read about DME (and I am going to use it for the first time this September) you have to bring your bags down to the airport check-in. Leaving your bags in the room only gets them transferred if you are moving from one resort to the next.

This past Nov. when we didn't use DME we were able to bring our bags to airport check-in and get our boarding passes right at the hotel (Beach Club). I think the people who left their bags in the room were mistaken. In this case they were probably the aforementioned weakest link in the chain.
