Changes to Main Dining Room dinner dress suggestions.

Read this 2nd hand on another fan forum but apparently the rumor is that Disney Cruise Line is relaxing the main dining room dinner dress suggestions slightly to include shorts. Previously it was suggested that guests wear slacks or pants, no shorts. I do believe this is going to mean nicer shorts vs. cutoffs or gym shorts. So instead of guys wearing khakis and polos they would officially have the option of nicer khaki shorts w/their polos. Not that this hasn't already been done and not turned away but it's being incorporated into the cruise casual dress suggestions on the website officially. Very cool.

Formal/semi-formal will still be suggested as formal & semi-formal.

Palo & Remy will still require the nicer level of dress, no shorts or jeans allowed.

Very cool move, IMO!

I like the idea. You're going to have people dress how they want anyway at least now I won't have to convince my DH to water pants on vacation (besides Palo) only to see others "breaking the rules"!

That would make DH very happy!! We're going on our first cruise next year and he's already dreading having to "dress" for dinner. He'd love to be able to just change his shirt since he already wears good shorts (not denim) most of the time!

Absolutely. Tracey can just change out his tshirt for a polo. Voila! And, nice shorts w/polo or short sleeve button-up will still look perfectly nice with my colorful, casual sundresses. Oooooh...I may need to take up the nice shorts & tops, too! Niiiiiiice!!!!

@Disneyfalcon , I guess now Jerry & Tracey's formal night rebellion won't be as far a stretch anymore, huh? LOL!

Wonderful move! Can you tell me which forum you read that on so I can let my wife read it! She normally will not allow me to wear shorts to dinner.

We always seem to somehow over dress for non formal nights but under dress on formal nights… WHAT?

Anyway… I think it is about time that Disney put this in their rules if they never enforced it anyway.

I am not a fan of this move. I think the problem with dress codes is that people will disregard them anyway, but often just a little bit below the required dress code. I think many who will go and wear shorts now would make sure to wear nice ones. Once shorts are allowed I don't think the standard attire will be nice shorts and polos, more likely people will not bother to change at all from there normal day clothes.

On my Wonder cruise in May I was actually pleasantly surprised how well the other cruisers dressed for dinner (it was late seating) and to me it added to the atmosphere in the dining rooms.

Just checked the DCL website since we depart for FL in 16 days and here's the quote from their Help & Support - Dining page:

"Dining dress requirements vary by venue or theme night on your cruise. In general, most meals are "Cruise Casual"—no shorts, swimwear or tank tops. Most cruises also have special theme nights with additional attire requirements. Here's a breakdown of these events by cruise itinerary."

My shorts are nicer, so if it is true, I'm covered. I'll let y'all know when we get back home.

I have to agree

I honestly never understood what the "big deal" was with the original dress code. We were talking Kahkis, not dress slacks. They are a notch up from jeans. You are on a ship - your stateroom is right there, and its air conditioned between your stateroom and the diing room.

I can understand it in WDW - heck, I have worn shorts to the CG - nice shorts, not cargo shorts. With the code the way it is you see people in cargo shorts and T-shirts in the dining rooms on the cruise. If they relax it further its going to become flip flops and speedos.

Yep! But lets wait until it's official! :)
It's been on the blogs and this website. You know that they can't put anything on the internet that isn't true. (Bonjour!)

As per the usual when it comes to Disney's websites, they're not lightning fast at updating. LOL! The rumors came from both a person who was on a cruise that was told the change would be effective I believe on August 5, 2013 as well as a Disney-specific travel agent who was informed (somehow) of the impending change. I'm not 100% because I personally have not called but when more than 1 source is being told on different occasions by DCL this is what's happening I suppose it's fairly plausible. We'll have to wait and see when the website posts it and it becomes officially official.

For us it's a matter of buying clothing that gets worn on the cruises then never again. My husband works on-site in refineries. His work clothes are fire resistant jeans & long work shirts with steel-toe boots. We homeschool so school clothes are pretty much pajamas, sweats, or gym shorts with tshirts. We don't attend church on Sundays. Before we cruised if we had khakis, polos, casual dress shoes, or dresses it's because someone died or someone got married. With teenage boys they grow out of things so fast we're getting 1 or 2 wears out of the dress clothes and they're gone to the donate pile. The husband has been able to rewear a lot of what we've bought previously but with the boys every cruise is precipitated by a week of mad rush to assess what no longer fits and buy what they need. Can't buy new clothes too early or they'll inevitably hit a growth spurt and the stuff won't fit. I literally do this whole process 3 or 4 days before we leave. 2 dress pants, 2 polos, a button-up, and shoes runs roughly $200 each. It's an expense and chore that I don't want to deal with. Annoying to say the least. Then, for people who live their lives as casually as we do, khakis & uncomfortable shoes are pretty un-fun and counter-productive to the laid-back vibe, like being in someone else's skin. We all know that each evening at a set time we have to stop the fun, go to the room, dress in clothes we're not that fond of, then go try to pull off a look that's foreign to us. No, it's really not that big a deal but it is what it is. It's the one thing we all readily say blows on a cruise. That's just us. We do it out of courtesy to others and respect to our hosts but we do not like it. We put the uncomfortable clothes on, eat, then run back to the stateroom to get back into normal clothes. The shorts aren't the biggest step towards comfortable for us but at least it's less to buy specifically for each cruise and it's articles of clothing the guys are likely to wear more than just on the cruise.

Formal and semi-formal nights are still there so those who enjoy all that still have the opportunity to indulge. On our upcoming cruise Tracey & I plan to have some drinks in the adult pool and steer clear of the frou-frou. I think we'll be muuuuuch happier for it, too!

I have to agree with you, our issue is that DH wears jeans to work every day, and none of the dressier pants he has fit any more (too big, YAY) so we will need to buy a couple of pairs at least and unless there is a funeral or wedding he will never wear them again.

Also, we fly to Orlando and checked bags are expensive enough without having to pay even more for an overweight bag or an extra bag due to the extra clothing we will need to pack for a seven night cruise!

I'm not saying that everyone should show up to dinner in the beach wear (we would never consider that), but it would be nice to not have to pack a bunch of extra clothes just to go have a meal. It is possible to look nice and put together in shorts.

Just a thought but you might want to have some things shipped directly to your stateroom.

A buddy recently took a cruise and had his golf clubs shipped a week early and they were in his room on arrival. He had a shipping label ready for the return and the staff took care of shipping them home.

Not sure if we can post other websites in here but I'll give it a try http://www.wdwinfo.com/disney-cruise-line/
I need to warn you though some people can get pretty touchy when it comes to talking about the dress code on the site I mentioned. I actually posted a couple of responses and had to stop it was getting out of hand.

IMO DCL can come up with whatever policies they want its their ship, they just need to enforce them.
